1982 Gold Bird door panel emblems
Just wondering if the "Bird" door panel emblems for 1982 Firebirds ever came in gold. All the ones I have seen are silver, and I know some people claim they made gold ones. There is only 1 part number in the parts manual. I even bought a set from Ebay from someone claiming they were gold. They were not. The plastic was hazy and yellowed over time and I cleaned them up with plastic polish. Once clean they looked silver.
There is a guy on Ebay now selling a set that he claims are gold. I sent him a message telling him what i have experienced and that they are actually silver. He said they were only gold in Canada from '82-'84. Funny since they were only in '82's The photo is convincing, however so was the one that I ended up buying. I also hear that Recaro TA's got gold "Bird" door panel emblems. Nobody can seem to verify this, and again there isn't a part number for a gold one. With GM having a part number for everything, even minor variations of things, and especially a different part number for all of the different colored rear filler panel bird emblems... I really don't think the emblems are gold, or were ever made in gold.

Re: 1982 Gold Bird door panel emblems
In my 82-83 parts book and in my 82-84 Canadian parts book there are two part numbers
20186781 – black part (base)
20455700 – red part(emblem)
Then in my 82-92 parts book there is just one number – 20186781
I think that early on you could buy the two pieces separate but later they decided to only sell the emblems as a unit.
There is no mention of gold, only the red.
The ones on eBay look a little rough, I think only the reds ones exist but if someone else says they bought there car new and it had gold emblems, I’d believe them. That’s the kind of thing GM would do.
Here is a pic from a Recaro door panel, its red.

I think they are talking about the actual outline of the bird being gold, not silver. The inside is still red. I still think they are silver.

Re: 1982 Gold Bird door panel emblems
There were 2 styles of door panel emblems used on the 82. One being shown in the picture. The other was designed like the horn button emblem with an all gold or silver bird.
Not all of the 82 Recaro TA's with power windows had the door emblems. The ones I have seen that did have them, had the 2nd design. The ones in the picture may have been replaced.
A friend, and a member of this board (that I have been trying to get in touch with) has 3 82 Recaro TA's that have the Gold 2nd Design and could verify what they look like. Unfortunately he doesn't seem to post here anymore.
