What engine does my VIN show?

I have a 1984 Firebird SE. I went to the site

http://www.motorera.com/firebird/firebird84.htm

and it says in the eight place of my VIN, I should have one of the following:

8th place *
Engine type where * is replaced by the following
  • R = 151-cid 4, 92-hp
  • 2 = 151-cid 4, 92-hp
  • X = 173-cid V6, 107-hp
  • 1 = 173-cid V6, 107-hp
  • Z = 173-cid V6, 125-hp
  • H = 305-cid V8, 150-hp
  • 7 = 305-cid V8, 190-hp
My VIN has an L....maybe the 1 above is a misprint of an L? I'm trying to find out what the horsepower was before the engine was bored 30 over. It looks like it was an anemic 107-hp.
I would also like to know how much horsepower was gained by the over boring.
Can anyone help me?
Thanks!
Chris

Re: What engine does my VIN show?

An "L" indicates a carbed 2.8 liter "H.O" V6. Rated at 135hp 145tq when new.

Re: What engine does my VIN show?

Those are all sorts of wrong

Here's what was available 84

2 = 2.5L 151 CID (LQ9)
1 = 2.8L 173 CID (LC1)
L = 2.8L H.O. 173 CID (LL1)
H = 5.0L 305 CID (LG4)
G = 5.0L H.O 305 CID (L69)

thanks for posting the correct information. I knew the original post looked way off... the "7" instead of a "G" for the L69 stood out immediately and it just looked like too many listings too.

Re: What engine does my VIN show?

Thank you all! That makes me feel a whole lot better. I was affraid someone put the wrong letter on my Title and I'd have to go through that whole mess with the DMV to fix it. Also good to know that the car started out with 135 hp instead of 107.
Now, does anyone know what the bored over 30 did to that horsepower, or do I have to take the car on a dynomometer?

This is not meant to be mean, but just know that it's slow and leave it at that. Your money is better spent about anywhere else rather than determining if you have 100 or 150 hp pushing your 3400 pound car. But hey, at least it looks cool and you can always put a kick-*** V8 in it later.

Boring it .030 over by itself won't make much of a difference in power. It was done because there must have been too much wear in the cylinders for a simple hone and re-ring.

Thank you! That's all I wanted to know. As for the V8, Maybe somewhere down the line, but I'm liking the mileage I'm getting with the 6, and I'm not out to race anyone. This is a show car. Although, I have given thought to making it a fuel injection rather than a carburator.Chris
