There are certain visual clues that can help ID a fake or not. The best information though comes from RPO codes. You are looking for the Y84 RPO code. The SPID (RPO codes) should be located in the rear locking storage compartment on the driver's side.

Re: need answers

PHS use to suppy a copy of the invoice.
Now, GM does.
I don't have the contact info, but someone/somewhere should.
It will cost you around $50, but worth it.
The copy of the invoice will show the options the car came with.
Like the GTA only option.

Hope this helps,

George

A CarFax won't tell if the car is a GTA from a Trans AM. The DMV does not know if the car is a GTA. Some titles state "Trans AM/GTA" even if the car is just a Trans Am. My Trans AM registered in Iowa shows this. The Trans Am and GTA share the same 1G2FW VIN prefix.

Rob's 92 gta, if you don't have the white/black SPID sticker, which is located on the inside of the cover for the locking compartment (located on the back left side), you can go to http://www.compnine.com. Click on the VIN Decoder/RPO Finder link and enter your VIN. You then should see a list of RPO codes specific for your VIN. The Y84 (GTA RPO code) will be there if the car is a real GTA.

PHS still can supply a copy of the invoice, but only for vehicles older than 1987. All 1987 and newer vehicles must go through General Motors Media Archives.

However, in this case, it probably would be a waste if the hard-copy documentation isn't needed. For average cars, the Compnine.com has all of the RPO codes for nearly all 1990+ ThirdGens.
