Follow up to my Police Auction Z28 Project...

I posted pics and info ( on another thread )about the 86 Z28 I purchased from a Police auction. Here is how the project is going to far. The car isn't finished yet since i started my new job( at a body shop) and i haven't had as much time to work on it as i wanted too. Here are some of the pics of the progress.

Re: Follow up to my Police Auction Z28 Project...

Here is the rear quarters of the car. the chassis was in great shape with some minor surface rust at the lower rear quarters. The trunk and wheel wells are nice considering its an 86.

The hood was painted and placed on the car. It wasn't bolted down in the pics so it looks like its out of alignment.

Re: Follow up to my Police Auction Z28 Project...

I need to finish installing the ground effects, paint the chin spoiler and the engine compartment(after the engine is removed). I was hoping to have it done before fall but I doubt that will happen. I'm tired of working on it and i'm anxious to drive it...lol

Thanks....Its a custom color i mixed myself. A 50/50 blend of GM ultra silver metallic and Storm grey metallic. I kept the codes and measures in case i ever need to mix more on the future.

Here are the completed pics of the car now. I got the 91-92 Camaro rims polished and back on it so it looks closer to stock then the Trans Am crosslace wheels.

Re: Follow up to my Police Auction Z28 Project...

Actually I did polish the center caps too. The outer ring is an aluminum cover over the plastic. I used a dremel and polished the ring. It took off the black lines and the bowties which i liked on them but there was no way around leaving them on and getting it polished.

Car looks good!! You might want to consider the 91-92 hood blisters with the stripes but that's your personal preference. Like I said the car looks well done!!

Re: Follow up to my Police Auction Z28 Project...

Thanks Burnout, I have considered the hood blisters but i havent seem to come across any for the right price. I did get a complete set of 91-92 Aero ground fx for the car but i won't be doing anything with those until spring. I just put in a complete set of gray seats from a 99 Z28 in it that look practically new. Plus the drivers seat is electric so i was able to wire it up to the fuse box with no problems.

Re: Follow up to my Police Auction Z28 Project...

Thanks....the car has a 350(#3870010) that was appearently put in the car. It has the original 700r4 trans(numbers seem to match at least) which won't upshift out of first gear. Who ever had it before put on an Edelbrock intake(painted it orange) and a 600 cfm carb. They didnt have the right brackets for the TV cable and it was constantly being pulled. I bought the correct TV bracket and re-adjusted the TV cable and this didnt help. I'm betting they ruined the trans in it so i'm trying to decide on whether to rebuild, replace or maybe convert to a 6 speed.

Since i will be changing out the transmission I am going to change out the motor and put in a 355 that i have sitting on my engine stand. I'd rather have some piece of mind with a rebuilt motor that i did since i'm uncertain about the 350 thats in it now.

have i got a story for you!! when you buy a car at a "police" auction you (at least here in TN) do not get a title, instead you get a bill of sale . the person the cops stole the car from is still the legal owner of the car.a friend of mine bought a car from a cop auction while shopping at wallyworld he comes out to the parking lot to find mr owner with title and keys to prove his ownership.the guy ,after showing my buddy the title just got into "HIS" car and drove away.long story short its best to not ever take the risk of buying anything from cop auctions.so good luck and change the locks!!!!

Re: Follow up to my Police Auction Z28 Project...

Rusty, here in WV, the police gets the title through the DMV and they can not sell them without it. We don t use the "bill of sale" way here. You cant even get insurance unless you have a title(or a copy from a bank if you are paying a loan on it). The title has been transfered to my name and all the lock have been changed considering half of them didnt work anyway. Plus its good piece of mind that way too.

Besides, if i ever ran into the past owner, he won't recognize the car thanks to complete color change :-)

Wow, awesome job. I love that silver color. I'm thinking of painting my car 69 Camaro Cortez silver with black stripes. And want to put the 69 Camaro emblems all the way around. I love your car!!!
