pontiac historic services

here is the site http://www.phs-online.com/order.htm

so i heard on this site that a couple years ago they have stopped doing 87 and newer pontiacs.... i was wondering did they change that.... i was interested in buying a complete packet for my 88 gta..... i had the spid label like three years ago and now i cant find it.... i know its a gta and i dont ever plan on selling it but it will be nice to have some history on the car... i have a feeling that these gta's 20 to 30 years from now will be really rare and worth something....

They should do them eventually for 87+, I think they do it for cars that are 25 years old. Once the car hits 25 you should be able to get it.

Re: pontiac historic services

The invoice service for your vehicle is currently being handled by GM Media Archive:
http://www.gmmediaarchive.com

You won't get a copy of the SPID sticker. Not even PHS was doing that. You get a copy of the invoice which will show some of the major RPO codes, cost and dealership information.

Re: pontiac historic services

thank you jt... will this at least tell me that its a true GTA... i know its a true GTA because when the car was 100 percent stock i did have the label, it had the y84 and l98 as one of the codes... i still have test sheet that i found in the car that apprently it went through a test before it was sold and it says l98 on it...

Re: pontiac historic services

The GM Media Archive invoice should have Y84 (GTA code) listed on the invoice if the car was a GTA.

Thats a sticker that is stuck on top of the dash plastics, under the dashpad, indicating the cluster passed all its tests.

Doesn't your VIN show it is a GTA?

Re: pontiac historic services

Both Trans Am and GTA share the same VIN prefix, and given both could have the same engine options (305 TPI or 350 TPI), looking at the VIN does not answer the question.

Re: pontiac historic services

Ah gotcha. I think I got confused since the VIN would tell you if it is an L98 or LB9 right?

Re: pontiac historic services

Last year I got the $50 PHS packet for my 88 GTA. It was a photocopy of the invoice, barely legible because the copy was so bad. I could just about make out the dealership name and after that all it showed was the invoice pricing and financing info. No RPOs or build info. Waste of money...

The 8th digit of the VIN tells the engine, but since the Trans Am could be ordered with the same engine options as the GTA (LB9 or L98), that alone doesn't tell the difference between a Trans Am or GTA.

I've ordered about 4-5 PHS documents (atleast 3 being for 1988 GTAs) and they all had some of the major RPO codes listed. Following is a small portion of a PHS document for one of my GTAs where you can see some of the major RPO codes (L98, Y84, etc.,). It's definately not a complete list of RPO codes, but it does cover some of the major ones:

If mine had those on it they were covered during the photocopy. I could barely make out the MSRP.

Re: pontiac historic services

Jim at PHS can provide you with a duplicate window sticker, but only after you get the dealer invoice from GM media archives. You can send him a copy of it and then get your PHS packet. I got the info for my TTA because I wanted to know what dealership it was sold new from. Kinda pricey, but the repro window sticker (I got it laminated) is nice to display at shows.

Re: pontiac historic services

PHS only has access to the dealer invoice. Only COST options will be listed as this was the way Pontiac billed the dealership. Standard options were already built into the base MSRP of the model of car.

To save filing space Pontiac transferred the invoices to Micro Fiche which greatly varies the quality and legibility of some invoices.

Re: pontiac historic services

PHS uses window-sticker.com to reproduce the window stickers. Why use a middle man. Go directly to the source.

I just went to this site and it states for all Pontiac cars, the window sticker must be reproduced thru PHS. So is this service free or is there a fee? The link directs you to PHS and they have a charge. Sounds like Pontiac owners have to pay and go thru PHS anyway.
