We all know what the 1968-69 BBody Mopars, and 67-69 Camaros, and the Chevelles are worth now. With that said, will our prized posessions EVER command that amount of money? I know there is a big differance between our rides and the cars mentioned above. Some had big blocks, production numbers. But lets say, another 10-20 years from now, will our cars ( obviouslly with condition pending) command 20-30 grand?

I think some of the low mileage clean OEM cars will get there one day. Remember 2rd gens were not cared about for a long time and now they are getting real hot and clean one's are bringing some nice bucks. Even right now some clean low mileage 3rd gens are bringing some nice bucks, and they are getting to be a hot item.

Re: Relevance

The great debate. I think we'd all like to think the third gens will be worth something some day. We're all enthusiasts of the generation, otherwise we wouldn't be here. If you look across all years of the third gen platform, GM did so many great things performance wise. It started in '82 with CFI and LG4s, then evolved to the L69 in '83, then 305 TPI in '85, then 350s TPI in '87, etc. GM continually push the performance and platform ahead. If you look at the 4th Gens (at least in V8 trim) there were two motors across the whole 10 year run -- the LT1 and the LS1 and that was it.

Whether the third gens will ever get any respect in community nobody can answer. For me, I don't really care. I think a lot of what we have today in terms of performance in the 4th and 5th gen cars owes a lot, if not everything, to the work GM did with the third gen. They learned a tremendous amount from '82 - '92 and I believe that all of that learning (good and bad) went into make the current Camaro what it is today.

I'd say the $20-$30k range would be possible for a few limited models of 3rd gens..ie TTAs, Firehawks. I don't think production numbers or rare options will dictate the value so much as does general condition, and by that I mean the performance models. I don't think to many people would put out that kind of coin for base model cars.

Nice low mileage late 2nd Generation (1977-81) Trans Ams and Z28s were routinely selling in this range a few years ago, particularly the Trans Ams, and they built tons of them. They cooled considerably with the housing bust but a good one will still cost you 15k or so, even with an Olds 403/automatic combo. Not bad considering that these cars could be picked up for practically a handful of dirt during the 1990s, much like our cars today. So I think it's possible, assuming the economy recovers.

Re: Relevance

Guys, this topic has been beaten more than a dead horse! Can we get on with the enjoyment of our cars and stop trying to see if they will ever have any value? Our cars will never carry any of the weight in value that the 1st gens did.

Take into consideration that a '69 Z28 might have cost around $4k new. When the car was 30, they were selling for around $20k restored or 5x their original value. Now, at 45 years, they have gone way up and settled back down at around $40k, or 10x their original price. At that rate, in 5 years, my '87 IROC-Z will be worth $105k and in 20 more years, it will be worth $210k. That ain't gonna happen, so enjoy what you have and don't worry about the value!
