Gadgets On the Roof Option???
I was viewing a video on youtube the other day of a completely origional 1985 Z28. They were showing the interior of the car and on the roof were the dome light was there were a series of switches between the T-tops. There also seemed to be a spot were a rotating light bulb would be as well. I have some knowledge of 3rd gens but never heard of any option like this. I have a later 3rd gen which is a 91 Z28 that doesn't have this.

Available in both the T-Top and hard top, control slightly different shape. Had "reminder spools", rotating map light, sunglass/radar detector pouch, flashlight (with either camaro or firebird molded into it and the dome light.

BTW, that isn't a sunglasses/radar detector pouch. In the 80s, that pouch was used for cigarettes. You could smoke anywhere back then so it was very common for cars and other popular items to have provisions for a pack of smokes.

Not according the brochure...but hey, believe what you want
Re: Gadgets On the Roof Option???
I don't think it had any designated purpose, just a general purpose pouch. I'm sure it saw plenty of smokes, and plenty of sunglasses, and plenty of packs of gum and other lightweight junk.

My option brochure for 86 says the OH console was available with the sub woofer control in it.It was standard in the SE with the UQ7 sound system.Iv'e never seen one with the controls in the OH console.

I like mine. Frankly, it's so unobtrusive that most people never see it unless it's pointed out.
Sub control? Humm, I've sold a number of overheads over the years, but I've never encountered or heard of that particular feature. Interesting.

Re: Gadgets On the Roof Option???
Just looks like a few do-nothing do-dads...
I have been in a car with that and the "stuff" kept falling outa the pocket thing..
Neat idea if it had a drop down GPS holder/plug in, ejecter seat button, removeable laser pinlight and missile launcher instead of those number wheel things.. Maybe I should pass that idea on to Bruce @ Hawks..
Of course I do understand its a period correct item but I just never have gotten whats so cool about them??

Re: Gadgets On the Roof Option???
Perhaps the brochure simply means that you can't get an overhead console without getting a subwoofer car? My overhead console came out of an 86 T/A that had the subwoofer control in the dash. Not an S/E I know, but still...

Re: Gadgets On the Roof Option???
Right, you would of had to have the UQ7 Sound System, then the controls in the console would have been an option. If you had the UQ7 System in a SE then the controls in the console would have been Standard.
I misunderstood you quote,my 86 TA had the UQ7 option and didn't come with the OH Console,I had added that just recently.

I tried a pack of cigars which are the same size as cigs, and they fall out. Not practical for sunglasses either. Gets in the way of rear view mirror slightly, but it's not going anywhere.

I keep my garage door opener in it,no problem. I think it has to have some elasticity to the band to get a nice grip on some items.

Re: Gadgets On the Roof Option???
I have one in my GTA, but yeah they're pretty useless. The map light is too dim, and those reminder wheels serve no purpose. I have a short in my dome light button, so I have to wiggle it sometimes to get my dome light to work.
I guess one positive thing is it keeps my abs headliner from sagging in the middle.

Re: Gadgets On the Roof Option???
That is correct. Do the LED conversion James typed up and you will not be sorry. I am with James, I like the look of the console. I'm still toying around with some ideas to make it more useful. My primary goal is remove the reminder dials and to relocate the window switches to that spot.

Re: Gadgets On the Roof Option???
I have an overhead in my 85 t-top car and I realized months after I bought my car that the RPO sticker does not list DK6. I am glad somebody added it because I would have added it myself. Who cares if the whole thing is useless, its just another goofy thing from the 80s that I like.

Re: Gadgets On the Roof Option???
Has anyone here ever repaired those light buttons? When I open my door the dome light will not come on (footwell lights do), but I can reach up there and barely touch that button on the roof console and my dome light will flicker. I'm assuming it must be a short in that button.

Re: Gadgets On the Roof Option???
I have one of those LED panels in mine, they're WAY brighter than the stock bulbs.
I know it's that button though, because I can barely touch it and the light flickers (with door open). If I go ahead and press it, the light comes on and stays on.

Re: Gadgets On the Roof Option???
Yeah my car had one of these overhead consoles in it when I bought it. It was one of the first things I removed from the car.
It was a nuisance, always in the way and looked raggedy with the elastic worn out in the pouch hanging down. Even if that had not been hanging down it just seemed out of place in the car to me.
Car looks much cleaner without it in there.

Re: Gadgets On the Roof Option???
When I turned my head to look out of my side window there was a giant black pouch in my line of sight. Also I occasionally bumped it with my head if I was leaning to the right for some reason. And it also interfered with the line of sight in my rear view mirror at times.
Now I am tall so that may have something to do with it, I dunno, I just know it routinely got in my way and I didn't like it. It really comes down to personal preference though.

Re: Gadgets On the Roof Option???

If you remove the useless manual odometer wheels you have a great place to mount switches. I have a sheetmetal plate in mine with my cooling fan switches mounted on it. Also removed the useless storage bag. The flashlight has come in handy a few times.
I have extra dome light lenses for these, and a Firebird flashlight. The dome lights JUST started being supported in the aftermarket, so for the last few years everytime I found one in the yards I grabbed it.

Re: Gadgets On the Roof Option???
Mine was junk when I pulled it out of the 85 Berlinetta and I made it worse by burning out the switches and one of the wires (don't try to test it using a jumpstart pack hooked to the wrong wires, FYI!). I rebuilt it with a push-on/push-off switch for the map light (which rarely works due to a problem with the socket
) and a toggle switch for the dome light/courtesy light switches. It doesn't have the pocket in it and never has had as long as I've had it (wasn't there in the yard, even), or the flashlight. I might try to replace both with other things in the future, but for now, it's collecting dust in the garage (and will be for a while since the 88 has no headliner

Re: Gadgets On the Roof Option???
Take the console off and check the wiring... The connector is pretty much right back there. The switch is actually for turning the dome and courtesy lights on when needed instead of jacking up the dimmer switch to achieve the same result.
