If your thirdgen could talk.....

Since this is the history section, and a cars history has just as much to do with the people as it does the machine, what stories would your car tell if it could?

Mine would probably tell the story of how it was a 3 yr old kid's (me) imaginary race car, and how that kid called it a corvette until he was ten.

When I was in highschool, I was in the science club. I was working the city wide science far at an elementary school across town, and ended up locking my keys in the car. I rode with a friend back to the highschool, and while on our way got a call that my grandfather had had a stroke. After a slight flip out, I hitched another ride to the ER and sat there for a few hours while we waited for the doctors to get their act together. Once they decided to keep him for a day or two, my aunt and I drove to her house to look for an old set of keys to her former car. We found a pair of GM keys and just had faith that they were to the camaro. We got a third of the way across town and my grandfather's cadillac told us that it was overheating and very politely asked us to pull over. I was in disbelief. How could I lock my keys in my car, papaw have a stroke, his car overheat all in the same day - and I think I had a band gig that night too, but I'm not sure-. I called a friend who came and got me and we went and got the camaro while the caddy cooled down.... That was a rough day.

My fuel pump was dying and caused the car to die and the only place I could coast into was an adult toy store. Imagine explaining to your not so car savvy parents why their seventeen year old son is at a sex store because his car broke down, but if we sit here for a few minutes it will run and drive again.......That was a bad luck day.

Basically the idea is to share stories that are about or involve your car that aren't about buying or building or the technical history.

Re: If your thirdgen could talk.....

My 82WS7 has 24K actual miles. My 86WS6 has 29K actual miles. Both cars are original and un-modified in any way. The original owners of both cars were older people, and I the second owner of both cars. I am no spring chicken. In fact the only reason I own the 86 today is because the original owner passed away and her family sold the car to my wife who bought it for me for my 50th birthday. The PO of the 82 just got tired of having a car that he did not dirve.

I sort of figure that if they could talk, they would say that they are bored as h*** belonging to old farts and not getting driven very much. The 86 would probably complain because my wife's cat likes to sleep on top of the car in the garage. Why the cat likes the 86 is unknown, but it is obviously her favorite. Yeah we keep a thick car cover on it to keep the cat from scratching the paint. The only advantage is that the cars are still both like new. It is a boring existance for a couple of thirdgens though, and I'll bet they feel like they are in prison.

Our grandchildren think that the 86 is Lighting McQueen, and the 82 is Knightrider, but that's another story.

Re: If your thirdgen could talk.....

I was really close to the Waldo Canyon fire in Colorado over the summer. Like, within a mile of Mountain Shadows neighborhood. The fire came up to the street about a block away from where I was. Well my fuel pump was just about done(the car would die regularly on more than a 15 min drive in hot weather, and I would have to sit for an hour before it would start again). So I was in a panic when the whole sky went black and started raining ash because I didn't think I was gonna be able to go. Started the car and the fuel pump started screaming like it was about to die already. Pulled out of the neighborhood, and traffic was bumper-to-bumper for miles. I sat in traffic for about an hour in 90+ degree weather to get a mile away from that fire. But yknow what? that car kept running. Any other day, that fuel pump would have given out on me and I would have gotten nowhere. So my car is a temperamental b!tch sometime, but I still love it. She always manages to pull through when I really need her to.

Re: If your thirdgen could talk.....

Mine would most likely talk about how it was sitting behind a small town transmission shop for who knows how many years. After having a tree branch fall on its drivers side front it was beginning to lose hope of ever being on the road again. With no motor and a carpetless interior that had mismatched seats and few panels just laying inside the car was on its last breath. A eager 17yr old happened to see it one day when he was there getting work done on his blown trans for his blazer. I had been looking that summer for a third gen Camaro/Firebird project but had no luck. I asked if it was for sale and looked it over. A few weeks later I was there with a friends trailer and my truck to pick it up.

After my senior year was spent mainly with my then girlfriend the car sadly was left sitting again. It had its hopes brought up only to be knocked down again. After sitting for a year and 3ish months with very few work done I was out of the relationship. Which meant I had more $ and time to spend on the car. Now almost a year later it looks like this.

Im sure it is happy as can be. It definitely runs like it is happy, of course with a little bit of extra weight put on the gas pedal by yours truely.
Now I would love to hear the cars history before I came across it. What led it to being in the condition I found it in? The guy who owned the shop didnt have much history on it. All I know is that it was going to be a drag car. Most likely the ******* way. I feel like I saved this car.

Re: If your thirdgen could talk.....

Guys, seriously. This is not the right place for this. The history of the car, for this forums sake, isn't about, "if cars could talk!" This forum is for the history of the car from design stage to final production, decoding, options, why things were built the way they were, how to restore it correctly, etc.
