How To Determine If I Have A 1982 Pace Car or not?

Hello everyone. Im new to the boards here. I just purchased myself a 1982 camaro. The guy told me he thought it was a Pace Car.

I got it home and took a look at everything. The whole interior is all Pace Car Interior. The car is white right now but you can see some blue a tiny bit in the door jams. To me from all the interior all the way down to a T it being all pace car it sure seems like it used to be one that someone painted over.

Under the hood it is the grey color as well.

The code under the hood on the radiator tag also matches up.
C 03A 1FP87 L 131402
26G 16L 16U
AQ9 CC1

I looked for the build sheet and found pieces of it so it doesnt tell me much if anything. Much help is appreciated!

Welcome. Looks like an Indy pace car to me. 26G is pace car only interior. Check this out. http://www.indypacecars.com/1982/techreport3.html Go to the arrow to turn the page.

Thats what I thought on the Radiator Tag numbers. And like I said the whole interior is all Pace Car. Its just the emblems are missing on the outside of the car and its painted white. I wanted to make sure it was a pace car to see what direction I wanted to take this car in. If its a pace car I want to bring it back to the original Pace Car look. If not I was gonna do my own thing.

26g, 16L and 16U are all you need to know that it's a Pace Car. The build sheet for all pace cars is under the springs in the passenger seat. If there is enough of it left, look for Z50. If you see that, you have more than one way to prove the car is legit.

I appreciate that! I got the build sheet but its in pieces. I may pull the seat and see if there is more of it left. I dont have the whole thing.

I plan on keeping this baby forever since it is a pace car so I really dont need to prove anything to anyone. I just wanted to know for my own good and how I was going to go about fixing it up. So if thats all I need to know its a pace car then HELLS YES!

Im so excited about it. Didnt know what I was buying and fell into a piece of history and a gem. Couldnt be happier. Thanks for the help!

I enjoy seeing special edition cars like this restored to how they once were. Pretty cool piece of automotive history.

Its very cool to me. Im a big history buff when it comes to stuff like this. Im so excited that I ran into one of these by accident and all of my family looks at me like whatever

Funny thing, I just bought a full weatherstrip kit from you off ebay. I cant wait to get the kit and get all the weatherstripping back in. Almost all of it is missing or is rotted.

I got one as a used car in 1984. My wife drove it for a few years and I sold it. One strange thing about it was it said camaro inside the windshield. Not a sticker but made into the window. Does your's have it? Thats my wife circa 1986.

The CAMARO windshield was a decal on the outside of the windshield and also on the back window.

Congrats on your pace car and kudos for deciding to save it. I'm on the middle of rebuilding mine as well. What options are on your car?

Thanks man! No doubt shes going back to original form. Cant wait to get there. Wished I had all the money to get it done all at once Gonna be a work in progress for sure.

Mine has the 305 in it. 4 Speed Tranny. T tops of course. Manual windows. Looks like it had the crossfire injection at one time since there is an 02 sensor that is unhooked and a carb on there now. Which I dont mind one bit!

LOL - crossfire gets no love. . My build is here:

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/hist...-pace-car.html

and my site is here:

http://www.vosehome.net/82pacecar

I'm at the 1.5 year mark and still going. Takes time for sure, but will be worth it in the end. Good luck with yours. There is a ton of good info and a lot of great people here who can help.

Also - if the 4 speed is original, you car couldn't have been a crossfire. Only the LG4 motors had the manual. What's the 8th digit of your VIN?

I just assumed since I saw an un plugged 02 censor. H is the 8th digit.

H indicates the 145 HP LG4 (carb) car. Nothing wrong with that. 4 speed cars, I believe, are somewhat rare. Does your car have rear disc brakes by any chance?

Weird. I wonder why i have a unhooked 02 censor then. NO worries. Just strange. Im glad its a carb car honestly. Ive only had the car for 4 days so im not sure if it has rear disc brakes. Ill have to get under and look when i get the chance. Unless you can find out another way?

Without the build sheet in tact, it's impossible to say whether or not your car came with rear discs and there is no official way to find out. Unless those piece of build sheet you have list "J65" (the rear disc option code) somewhere. Rear discs are another somewhat rare option which is why I asked.

I'm pretty sure the LG4 cars had a computer controlled carb. That would explain your unhooked O2 sensor. The carb will probably be less hassle for you. Me -- I wanted a Crossfire as you just don't see many of them around.

I hear ya! Same goes for my 4 speed. You dont see many of those and that was a very cool and exciting part for me when i bought my car!

Re: How To Determine If I Have A 1982 Pace Car or not?

Never realized it at first when I was reading. lol But, I like these resurrected old posts at times. I never saw it the first time & enjoyed reading about it.

So as long as its alive again, what's the current status of the 82 pace car? Also noticed the talk about of the windshield decal. Not sure if this is what you saw 4 years ago, but I bought a car (not a 82 pace car) that had one of those decals on since it was new. Its was an add on & I reverted the car to all stock after purchasing it. when I took the decal off the windshield, there was (& still is) a permanent silhouette in the upper shade/tint. The UV rays of all those years lightened the exposed areas around it. It doesn't jump out at you, but you can sure see it.

Re: How To Determine If I Have A 1982 Pace Car or not?

What messes with me is when I read an old post and start questioning how knowledgeable a response is and that I had no idea about that answer. Then I look to see who posted the response, and it was ME!!! Did I used to know that? Did I really forget that much? Nope.
That's where research prevails. We can't know or remember everything, so researching answers is definitely a good thing. It reminds me of how little I know or remember, and looking back over old posts saves me the time of re-researching the answer again.

I usually don't have issues with old posts being resurrected if there is new information presented. The times that aren't necessary is when a response is something like, "Yup, what he said". You know the person was researching a question they had, and found a post here that discussed it and they responded, not realizing the age of the post. We're all guilty of it.

Re: How To Determine If I Have A 1982 Pace Car or not?

So Very True. I have been a snowmobiler for many years Living in the 'northern' Midwest. I used to know each specific model of snowmobile extremely well while I owned & drove them. Recently I bought an old 2004 sled for my 12 year old & was doing some preventative maintenance work on it. I completely forgot some of the nuances of the drivetrain as there where known issues with them. I quickly searched through the archives of a snowmobile forum I am a member of & found the info I was looking for. I found myself reading info & soon realized it was my own post. I almost laughed out loud & it was a little creepy that I didn't realize its was my own thoughts nearly 7 years earlier. At least I didn't start an argument with myself, or ask myself a question......

I own a 42,000 original mile Z-50 with factory J-65, and LU5.

Only IPC at the IPC 1993 reunion event with J-65. I had no idea what the fuss was until I came out of the stands after a break in qualifying to find 30 guys crowded around the car commenting on it.

Electric Antenna quit in 1989 and when I pulled the radio lead to pull the motor out I noticed something gold colored up entangled in the under dash harness. After some untangling there it was...a ladies Bulova watch.

Some lady from Van Nuys soft trim is missing her watch...

How cool would it be to reunite her with the watch.... Still Have it?

With my regular 82 being MM4/J65, I've always wondered if there are any MM4/J65 IPCs out there- I've never seen one!

That would be neat. Given the J-65 option cost it is likely a buyer would pony up the engine money first and order an LU-5.

Z-50, LG-4, and MM4 would be a Holygrail find for sure.

Pretty much...I suspect the watch likely belonged to an Absentee Replacement Operator (ARO) A worker assigned to harnesses full time would know better than to wear a watch like this to install harnesses. She was likely petite.

Thanks you just Answered my question. I was trying to see how many 4 speed cars. But I think there figures were wrong, they stated there was 34,170 Standard cars? Maybe they mean the Z28 also? I think I read there was 6,600 Indy pace cars made for that year.
