I also discovered in during the engine removal that the exhaust is welded together from the y pipe all the way back to the tail pipes. I guess I'll be buying a new exhaust system now too since I originally only planned on a new y pipe and some shorty headers.

Re: Interesting Car at Thirdgen Fest.

Original/rare or not, I think they have to be swapped out for an upgrade. The factory brakes inspire zero confidence. My 87 Iroc had the rear drums too and were fine when I lived in the Mid-West, but here in they hilly surroundings of Pittsburgh in Western PA the drums and small front discs simply scare the crap out of me. I'll think I'll look into the PBR conversion or something similar once the engine goes back in and I work the bugs out of the rebuild.

Re: Interesting Car at Thirdgen Fest.

Speaking of bugs. While I'm waiting for the machine shop to finish up my block and head I decided to try and clean the injectors with a little rig I made to hook up to a pressurized fuel source and a momentary button. I think I put about a gallon of carb/FI cleaner through these old Multec's and the majority of them still behave more like a slobbering baby than any injector I've ever seen. Might try a set of the Bosch DIII's.

Re: Interesting Car at Thirdgen Fest.

its looking awesome man! It's something i would of done too with my GTA, if i would would of kept my ride. I just recently done a tear down on my bro's GTP grand prix 3.8L engine and yes, if you don't pay close attention to what bolt came off of where then you be having some issues. Luckily he bought a OE GM service manual, that helps

I bagged and tagged everything, but you still have to fight with what bolt goes in what hole.

Re: Interesting Car at Thirdgen Fest.

Finally found the time to get the motor back where it belongs. Had to drop it in from the side because my folding hoist doesn't extend far enough over the nose of the car. What a pain in the a$$. On to the wiring and plumbing.

Re: Interesting Car at Thirdgen Fest.

Fired up the new motor today. IAC is bad. Constantly sucking air. I'm guessing it's stuck wide open. Also I fear I have a leaking freeze plug. Which should be fun to replace.

Re: Interesting Car at Thirdgen Fest.

I think I finally worked out all the bugs. I got sick of fighting with the EGR not working properly and ripped it out of there along with the AIR system and got a re-tune. I don't even want to add up all of these receipts and see what the damage was getting this car back on the road. Every time I thought I had it sorted out it threw another code at me. I think the MAP sensor is the only one that I didn't replace at this point. Now on to the suspension, body and interior.

Brian Harris at http://harrishighperformance.com worked my eprom for me. Car runs great and he turned around the chip in less than a week.

Re: Interesting Car at Thirdgen Fest.

You've done a bunch of great work! I suppose I got lucky with my recent purchase though compared to all the work you've done.

Mine had 154k on it, but all the engine work I've done is replace valve stem seals and add an open element air filter/TBI spacer.

My sensors are all good and throwing no codes, despite the PO treating the care like total garbage (literally, garbage was sitting in the back when I bought it.)

I've been driving it instead of my Bronco because its getting about 20mpg now and my bronco gets 15!
fully freshen up the engine though and clean everything out, also get new exhaust, but I don't have the money for that just yet!

Great job on what you've got done so far though!

Re: Interesting Car at Thirdgen Fest.

Fresh engine is all tuned up now without emissions equipment or EGR. I tried the Bosche III's as a replacement for the stock Multec injectors but was not satisfied with the noise level. Those were swapped out for Accel (Standard Motor Products) injectors. Much quieter now.

With that done it's on to the suspension. I'm gonna keep with the lowered look with all new shocks/struts bushings etc...

Rear end it out of the car for a cleanup and a fresh coat of chassis epoxy. Still waiting on a few more parts before it goes back in.

Re: Interesting Car at Thirdgen Fest.

Found this little gem in the local pic-a-part yard too. Since I deleted the a/c I couldn't pass this up. It was on an early thirdgen that was just about picked to the bone. Only $5.00!!! I'll have my powder coat guy freshen this up for me before installing.

Anyone know who sells the gasket for non a/c heater boxes?

I finally got around to re-building the front end of this rig. Vogtland coils, C6 Z51 brakes, Billtseins, poly bushings and all new Moog steering parts.
