Special order cars

Does the original widow sticker of a car tell you whether the car was ordered by the customer or was "bought off the lot".

I have the original window sticker for mine. But I can't tell whether the customer ordered it special or if it was spec'ed out by the dealer.

No, the window sticker won't give you that information, but the RPO codes will. Look for 1AZ for a customer ordered car. For dealership stock, 1AY was used.

My fathers 99 T/A was ordered by the original owner. The window sticker does not mention anything about it being ordered.
I know it is not a thirdgen but HTH.

Well I know for a fact that my car was custom orderd and I have the original window sticker but my car also does not have the RPO's 1AZ or 1AY as mentioned either. I guess they just didn't specify on my car or something, good thing I happen to know

Wouldn't it be great if GM put your name on the window sticker for specially ordered cars... Or maybe an addendum to the sticker... great for documentation purposes.

I've known this to be the case. Speculation: Maybe 1AY and 1AZ were only used for specific years, i.e. 1985 - 1989. Or maybe Pontiac did not use them at all..... This would make a nice survey question.

My 1987 has 1AZ, also the 85 Z28 i sold to SmurfinZ has 1AZ.
So it looks as if they were both customer ordered.

If they put your name on the window sticker then what would happen to the dealer that I worked for who shafted me out of the loaded 02 hawk that should be coming? Damn I wish they did that.

Nor does my 84 sport coupe have either code.

Kinda made me think of a difference in the plants. But the point that mine being a Norwood car, and Blue's 88 being a Van Nuys car, leads me to think that may some cars just received them at random on their spid stickers.

What is actually interesting, someone mentioned puting the name on the window sticker...

I have one better, back in 1963, the Buick Riviera, if you special ordered one, you would get a little plackard saying, specially made for "Your name" placed on the dash...

I know its not a F-body but GM used to do kewl things like that, now its all about the money...

sorry about the non thirdgen note, but i worked for an olds dealer, and we had a mid 80s toronado trofeo that would come in for oil changes w/ over 200,000b orig miles that had a computer touch screen from the factory- only made for one year-too many problems, and when you started the car, it would display this oldsmobile was specially built for ..... and served as gauges, service interval monitor and all kinds of cool $hi+.

The Buick's had that touch screen from 86-89 in the Riviera. I remember someone telling me that for the Buick Open they would program the touch screen for certain Golfers when they came to town.

My old '91 Z28 had the 1AY designation and was a special dealer order. I can't post the pic of the RPO's because it never turned out and the car now belongs to another member here but the codes on it were

AJ3 AM9 AR9 B18 B35 B84 C49 C60 DE1 D34 D35 D8M D81 E5Z E9Z FE2 GU6 G80 G92
IPC J65 KC4 K68 LB9 MK6 MM5 NA5 NP5 N10 N64 N96 QLC T96 UB3 UM7 UQ1 U79
VAN V73 Z28 1AY 1SB 17P 19C 19I 19Q 199 41U 6DB 7DB 8NL 9NL

So you can say that the codes were used throughout the 3rd gen run anyways.

Sometimes dealers are morons and order the car for you as a stock car. If they forgot to select that it was a customers car then it went through as retail stock. The cars still get built but don't go to the front of the line. It has happened and I ended up fixing many orders that were ordered as stock and had $$$ on a special order car. Maybe it happened to you too.

HEY EVERYONE

WHEN I BOUGHT MY 1985 IROC Z CAMARO THE PERSON I BOUGHT IT FROM SAID THAT IT WAS SPECIAL ORDERED FROM THE FACTORY WITH A CORVETTE ENGINE.
I LOOKED AT THE RPO CODES AND IT SAYS ITS A 305 (LB9) ENGINE. I ALSO RAN THE VIN AND IT IS CODE "F" WHICH IS THE 305 LB9
IS IT POSSIBLE THAT I HAVE A CORVETTE ENGINE UNDER THE HOOD OF MY IROC Z

U CAN CHECK IT OUT AT

85's were notorious for people claiming to have a 350 when in fact it was only a 305. In 86 new emission regulations were implemented making the 305 slower than the 85's. I have a buddy that bought a brand new IROC, and the VIN said 305, but everyone was convinced that there was some sort of screw up and he accidently got a 350 because it was too darned fast for a 305. Well when he blew the eingine, he found out the truth it was a 305.

Chances of getting a 350 from the factory in 1985: 1 in a billion.

sorry...

John

I guess to add to my prior statements, back in 84 when the TPI engine was in development, it was originally designed to be a 305, across the board. The Vette included. When it came down to crunch time and the all the beancounters looked at the demographics they decided to take what was originally going to be used on a 305 and stuff a 350 under it for the Vette only.

It is very possible when the car was ordered dealers were informed that the vette was going to be using a 305 in 1985. When the guy "special ordered" the car he was probably told this, and he was not wrong in stating so (at the time)

NOW that we look back we know that the Vette got the 350, the camaros & Trans Am's all got the original 305 until 1987...

does that make any sence?

You bought the car didn't you? He said this either to sell you the car or someone told him this and he believed it. Now adays if you tell people that the LS1 in the vette and F-body is exactly the same no one believes you. They are but back then it wasn't the case and someone was probably mis informed or told you this because it was what you wanted to hear. Either way you still have a very nice car
