Centre console top panel removal
Can anyone explain how to remove the top panel of the center console? The panel with the window and mirror switches mounted in it?
I've removed the two screws at the rear just under the arm rest, and the screw under the ashtray but its still not moving. I can't see any other fixings.
Mine is cracked where someone has tried to pull up the rear section after getting to the point I'm at at the moment, and I'd like to repair/remake/fit a new one.

You need to take off your heater and radio bezel, shifter plate, and your armrest(not neccessary but it helps). Behind your radio bezel there should be two screws holding it tight, take those out. Next under your armrest there is a total of 4 bolts (I think 12mm) You also should take your E-brake plastic or leather off (one screw) After you get everything unscrewed and bolted, kind of slide it back and up. Then unhook the wires to the window and trunk switch.
Hope that helps a bit.
Dang is just saw you have a firebird. Sorry man the stuff i listed above is for a camaro. Sorry man someone with a bird will have to help you.

Pull the radio pod trim, it just has snap clips
Next just pull the shift plate out, it also has snap clips. It will only come up 2-3 inches before the window plugs stop it
Unplug these carefully and the hard part is done
The cigarette lighter can be tricky to wiggle out too but its all do-able

When you say pull the shift plate out, do you mean the plastic trim to the left of the shift gaiter? If so, do I just lever it up using a screwdriver or similar?
I've just found this pic of the section that I'm trying to take off, its towards the bottom of the page https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/inte...hlight=console. It only shows the shift plate in position though.

Thats the shift plate
Take shift **** off
Open the console door and pull up gently on the rear
The rear snaps should pop out
Next pull the front section up over the snaps
Unplug the window switches and wiggle the plate over the cigg lighter
Its not that difficult

Don't know if I'm being a doofus here, but how do I unplug the electrical for the power windows and how do I get the cigarette lighter thing out? I've got the lid up and off the shifter but everything's still hooked up by wires and I've tried all kinds of ways to unhook it but can't get them off...
Thanks.
Thanks.

How does the shift **** dis-assemble? i have to be missing something here, I have the leather looking one with the push button and I'm tearing it all down for a ratchet shifter, and maybe a trans brake, we shall see.

You can remove the shift **** by carefully pulling out the wire clip that goes through the shaft of the **** just under the top section on the forward facing edge. It'll be flush when you forst see it, but you just need to get a small screwdriver and pry it out enough to get a pair of pliers onto it. Once that's out give the **** a wiggle and pull it up, off the shaft. On my shift lever, it seemed like the gaiter was glued to the shaft, but it was just stuck through being in the same place for 22yrs. Its very easy.
