89 RS, Complete Interior Makeover

I ripped out the old gray plastic and replaced with black

I reskinned the seats with leather

headliner, sun visors and rug from stockinteriors.com

the rug is ACC, the same stuff sold by a sponsor here so just shop to see who has the best price at the time as they all tend to source from the same suppliers

the door panels are being changed to black as well

I do believe the black and gray looks good and will look even better when the panels are replaced

FYI- I'm restoring an 89 RS top to bottom including new engine and tranny

Looks fantastic! Going to be tearing down my 89RS by the end of the year myself, I'd love to get seats like that. Who did you have redo them?

i did them myself. I have no artistic ability whatsoever. I can fix or buold things and was shocked that i could do it.

Those are not covers, it's new upholstery as I removed the old cloth.

I removed the cloth, removed the track assembly from the passenger seats, wire brushed all the rust on the frame of the seat especially on the tracks where they will rest on the floor of the car. I then used a can of black "rust reformer" or whatever it's called and sprayed the frame so it won't rust again. The rust just has a nasty smell and who wants to smell that?

Oh, if you go this route, don't take off the old upholstery inside the house, there is a lot of dust that comes off with the covering.

I did not use hog rings. I installed the new leather upholstery and used tie wraps to hold it on. I slap myself because I should have taken photos during the process.

I've seen new upholstery for sale as high as $1,000 and average around $600. I bought mine for $260 from a person who was local but listed on Ebay. I bought it way in advance of needing the upholstery because I knew it was an awesome deal.

In this economy where we are all looking to save a buck, maybe you could PM some of the sponsors on this site who sell interior and ask them to put out feelers looking for what you need. They in essence might be able to broker something for you, make a few $$$ themselves and help you.

Another option on seats might be to try the "custom seat covers"

I bought a set for my front seats in my 95Z and will be installing them soon. They look like they will go on like a glove. The fronts cost $150 (or around there) shipped from Coverking on Amazon. It's the same product that Iggee sells on Ebay for $40 more. They also have covers for the rear. They are vinyl, not leather like i got for my 89 but the quality looks good and I'll know soon enough how they look once installed.

Things that make you go hmmmm

I changed to a black interior that was in good shape that I bought locally, replaced the front rug, headliner, sun visors, seat upholstery and need to repair my dash. If I wasn't able to find great deals on all of those items, and do it myself, it would cost more than rebuilding my engine and tranny.

Interiors are expensive.

You Aint kidding! Did you use the same foam padding or were you able to find new? My only concern to do it is I would like fresh foam but can't find any. I suppose I haven't looked too hard yet.

the upholstery that I got had some minimal padding on it. I added a little bit of foam to the driver side bolster where it had worn. I sprayed fabreeze on all of the foam and let it sit for an hour before installing the upholstery. The seats feel fine and no longer smell.

The custom seat covers from coverking also have a little foam on them if you decide to go that route vs re-skinning
