Is there a way to make seatbelts retract better

I would like to cure a problem with my seatbelt not retracting completely. If I could put more tension on the spring, it would retract all the way.

Any input would be appreciated

Re: Is there a way to make seatbelts retract better

Someone recently posted a thread about reworking the winding part of the seatbelts - do a - I'm pretty sure it was only a month or 2 ago.

I tried a search before starting this thread. I used several different combinations of words, but I couldn't find a thing on TGO.

I think this is the one mentioned

Let us know how it works out if you get the chance

I will study this over. I am reluctant to tear into the trim as is shows, but if that is the fix.. I was hoping rewind the bottom spring where I think it needs it. That's where I have the slack, but not as much as In the pic.

That's the thread I was thinking of. I never read it thoroughly, but I remembered it showed how to get the 'winder' part winding better.

What is your seat belt doing that has you believing it needs repair? The seat belts in these cars have the "comfort fit" or whatever it's called that allows it to not pull tight on the shoulder all the time. It was so annoying to me that I actually performed the mod that is listed above and moved the clip out of the way on the drivers side. Does your seat belt get slack in it and stay there like the clip would allow or does it not fully retract at all and isn't a part of the "comfort option"?

It's not retracting all the way by the floor. It's hanging out just enough that if I am not thinking about it, it will get pinched in the bottom of the door. I have to flip it up so it is not laying on the molding. Just a few inches would do it.

Hello Stevolwevol!!

For the bottom retractor, open the back plate on it and clean out all the crap inside the retractor mechanism!!

You should find hair, carpet fuzz, pennies, and other crap that is gumming up the bottom retractor!!

Once all that crap is cleaned out, spray some WD-40 in the ends of the retractor shaft!!

You could also squirt a bit of WD-40 into the ends of the top retractor's shaft, a little Preventive Maintenance doesn't hurt!!

If your top retractor is not working properly (ie the seat belt is just hanging, and won't retract), use the mod that I posted, this is the one that henryd3 and scottmoyer are referring to!!

If your careful with the headliner, you should have no problem following the pictures, and doing the mod!!

I'll do the clean out and WD thing and let you know how it retracts. I don't want to get WD on the cloth belt.

Re: Is there a way to make seatbelts retract better

I have never liked the "comfort" option and it becomes very annoying when the local radio stations play such garbage that I need to constantly reach forward to channel surf. I was constantly pulling the seat belt to readjust. The mod has allowed the belt to stay pulled like the newer cars regardless of my movement. I like it and now my son, the passenger seat warrior, is complaining that I didn't do it to the passenger seat!

Hello Stevolwevol!!

Use the applicator tube that comes with the WD-40, shake the crap out of the can to mix it really good, and then just squeeze, using really light pressure, a quick "little" squirt, almost as if it was oozing from the can should do it, it don't take much!!!

Less is better in this case!!

To protect the belt, try using a "clean" rag to cover the belt roll, and using the applicator tube, direct the WD-40 at the end of the retractor shaft, as I have stated above!!

Hello scottmoyer!!

I'm glad you liked it!!

Give your son an early birthday present, and fix the passenger side also, you know you will eventually have to do it anyways!!

Re: Is there a way to make seatbelts retract better

I used to hate how the wind from the windows being down would cause slack in the upper belt haha. It would blow on it and slowly pull it out. When Ide come to a stop, I would have all this belt dangling.

My fix was 4th gen belts. My old ones were also not locking up like I thought they should.

I took a retractor apart, and quickly gave up on messing with it hahaha..and just converted.

Glad to see some of you are refurbing them!

J.
