red led gauges, shifter, and hvac
Okay ill apologize in advance, I know there are several threads already existing about this lil mod but a)what information I did read seemed to contradict each other from thread to thread, and b) its a real pain to search on my phone. And since I no longer have internet at the home stead for the moment id really apriciate it if somebody with experience here could answer a few questions. So basically what im wanting to do is exactly what the title says, I think I've got it figured out on the dash board but im not sure how many bulbs ill need. I believe its the 194 bulb, and on my 92 it should just be plug in and go correct? Now what I really had a problem finding was what kind of bulb for the hvac controls and shifter light. Also im guessing its gonna be a pain with that hvac control. Thanks in advance

Re: red led gauges, shifter, and hvac
I have Red in the Gauges, HVAC, and shifter. Ill try and get pictures tomorrow night because my...sibling, stole my camera.
I believe i got 20 just to be safe +a Dome light red LED. I used most of the 20 LEDS but as i recall one or 2 of them werent working properly.
The shifter is pretty simple, HVAC is a pain, especially if you have big hands, because the HVAC bulb needs to twist in the back of it and its a very tight space. Basicly where ever you see a bulb, replace with red. simple really.

That would be helpful thank you... but yeah I kinda figured it'd be like that but where ther bulbs all the same part number, and do you remember how many on the gauges? And if its a pain with big hands ill be screwed since big would be an understatement...

Re: red led gauges, shifter, and hvac
To be honost I feel like the drivers seat of my third gen is the most spacious vehicle seat I've ever been in. I took the plastic guard or whatever off that was below my dash, and it would appear that one of the pos moved the seat back a couple inches. When both are moved all the way forward its about 2 inches farther back. There's a thread on that somewhere here. And also I have the seat tilted back to far. To me its really comfy but if you look at it it looks like id be laying down lol. Doesn't feel like it to me. I had it at 90 degrees once and the tops off and smacked my head real hard when i hit the brakes lmao. But I've never sat in a forth gen comfortably...

Whenever you get done installing all your new LED's, it'd be nice to see a write-up about it on the 92 dash. I've tried searching it before and always come up with results showing the earlier dash set-up. I'm VERY interested in doing this as well so it should be nice to see your finished product!

Re: red led gauges, shifter, and hvac
To the OP, your 92 is a bit different than the others with pre-90 interiors. Your cluster will take only 4 bulbs to light the gauge faces IIRC. Not near as many as the 82-89. And you don't have a speedometer cable to worry about either, so removing the cluster is that much easier.

Re: red led gauges, shifter, and hvac
^ I'm already liking the sound of that. So doing this on our newer 92 dash's is a little bit more cost effective as well? I mean HVAC controls, and the shifter lights don't use anymore or less either right?
And if you're only utilizing 4 LED's versus the 13 or so in the older cars, wouldn't the dash itself be alot dimmer?

Thanks, i got them from http://www.superbrightleds.com/
Definitely worth the money.
And to the OP, interesting that the seat has been modified and that you have to sit that way, cant imagine it really....cant wait to see the finished product.
AND i will hopefully have the pics for you by tonight for the HVAC and Shifter. Stay tuned.

Re: red led gauges, shifter, and hvac
I have a 91. I used a total of 6 192 LED bulbs: 4 in the cluster, 1 for the HVAC and one for the shifter. Real easy, but one caviat: I had to make sure that when I installed the bulbs in the 4 bayonet mounts in the cluster I used a set of needle nose pliers to crimp the leads against the mounts for good contact. Other than that is was cake- they have been in over a year and no problems. I left the regular bulb in the interior light. The LEDs are useless for that light...

Re: red led gauges, shifter, and hvac
I don't have my stock gauges any more, but if I remember correctly, the way light is distributed to the gauges, you don't really need a wide angle LED. If memory serves, light is distributed sort of like fiber optics into an extension of plexiglass from the lens.

Re: red led gauges, shifter, and hvac
32 is ok.
Here are the pictures sorry it took so long, and to be honest they dont really do justice.
First is of the dash and driver foot well,
second is of the gear area
and third is everything, horrible picture,
Turns out my HVAC arnt that bright enough for a photo, but in person they are fine.

Re: red led gauges, shifter, and hvac
Testeded it all out last night and it was very sexy haha. Except that I accidentally put the bulb for the tach in where the brake bulb is so now the tach is half yellow but oh well ill fix that later. But I had two led s left, so I check if they would go into the rear view mirror. They technically didn't fit but after popping out the bottom lense I could stick the end of the led thru the hole and it plugged in perfectly, and now when my doors are open my front half of the car is flooded with red ligh, I love it
