seat belt issues and questions

1984 camaro and the driver side seat belt will not retract, i was wondering is there any chance i can figure out what is wrong and fix it, or am i going to need a new seat belt system. my next question is if it is not fixable and i need a new system. will a harness like this work on a stock seat http://www.hawksthirdgenparts.com/pr...r-Snap-In.html
or do i need a retractor system. main reason i am asking is bc money is kinda tight right now and it would save me $40 for the harness

Re: seat belt issues and questions

Can you "help" it roll back up some or is it solidly stuck? It is either a weak spring or it got twisted over itself and jammed

Re: seat belt issues and questions

if i remember correctly it will roll up to a certain point but not enough that it would be a tight fit, and if i yank on it instead of stopping in its place like it is supposed to do for safety it does not

Re: seat belt issues and questions

There is a gravity based system set up for the belts where a pendulum swings as you put on the brakes and locks the belts. Doesn't do anything if you're sitting still

Re: seat belt issues and questions

Sounds like your spring is weak or has unspun. You could take the side cover of the belt assembly off and put some more twists in the spring, but do it at your own risk. I don't think messing with seatbelts is ever recommended but I've done it before and didnt have any problems with it

Re: seat belt issues and questions

even if the seat belt was brake operated it still has no way to fit me, if i put 250 pounds of pure fat on it would be a different story. so should i go to pull-a-part, get a harness, or get a new seat belt assembly

That would probably be a good move, hit the wrecking yards in your area.
