4th gen steering wheel in a third gen ,c

I have a 91 convertible with the typical air bag cover shrinkage. I was looking to put in a 4th gen wheel like from 98-02. I have done a few thread searches and I see a lot of posts where people say its a direct bolt on and few other where some type of sanding or trimming took place.

If anyone has done this could you please post a few pics and let me know how it went, direct bolt, trimming etc?

Thank you - still new...

If you are talking about the entire wheel swap with air bag, its a direct bolt on. i have a 94 t/a wheel in my 88. You already have a 3rd gen air bag steering column so you are set there, that was the only thing I needed to change to make it work in my car. My next task is making the steering wheel radio controls work.

Thanks for the info. My plan is to just swap the entire wheel airbag package. I have a 2002 radio installed so maybe it will be easy to do the steering controls...lol!

One question for you, how was the airbag change out? As far as wiring goes. I have read where people just cut the connector off of the old airbag and spliced it onto the new one. Is it that simple? And if so did the idiot light stay off?

Re: 4th gen steering wheel in a third gen ,c

mine was an 88, so i didnt fuss with the air bag wiring, i did plug it into the air bag coil, but past that its disconnected at the bottom of the column. you may also want to grab the newer air bag coil harness so that you can plug in the steering wheel controls if you plan to go the route i am. If you grab the air bag coil it will have the proper wire in there to plug in the air bag, but I'm not sure if the bottom will be plug and play to your harness, but you can simply cut off the bottom end and splice in the one from your original air bag coil so it will plug into factory wiring. Make sure you use shrink wrap or self sealing solderless terminals so no moisture can get in the circuit, and you should have no lights.

Re: 4th gen steering wheel in a third gen ,c

So the air bag cover shrinks? LOL...I noticed that on my 92 Formula and wondered what caused it. I thought maybe someone had replaced the stock bag with one from a Grand Am or something. Haha... But a 4 gen steering wheel? If that works I may do it sometime too.
