LTX and LSXPutting LT1's, LS1's, and their variants into Third Gens is becoming more popular. This board is for those who are doing and have done the swaps so they can discuss all of their technical aspects, including repairs, swap info, and performance upgrades.

first off, will the LT1 directly bolt to the 700R4? i thought about a 4L60/ 4L60E, but i found every part that i need to rebuild the 700R4 to make it basically like a 4L65....5 pinion front and rear planetary gears, corvette servo, upgraded accumulators....and so on. the best part is that the rebuild will cost under $700 and it will be stronger than a 4L60. has anyone else used their 700R4? btw the engine is a 93 Z/28 lt1
As long as you are running the '93 ECM you *should* be ok since the '93 was the only year to run the 700R4. The problem comes with the '94-'97 and the fact that the PCM has to have problems running since it has to have the VSS signal from the tranny.
thanks for the reply. i've heard that the '93 actually had a 4L60....the non-electric version of the 4L60-E, but even at that, it is basically the same as the 700R4. that's just what i read somewhere...i just needed to know if it bolts up...i haven't looked at my tranny in a while.
You'll also need a '93 LT1 throttle body because it has the stud for the 700R-4 TV cable. With some doing, you can retrofit the 4L60-E VSS onto the 700R-4. Firebat has the info on that conversion.
Also, the 4L60 IS the 700R-4. Exactly the same transmission. GM just changed the name so it matched the rest of their transmissions.
Also, I noticed under your name that you have a 2.8 in your car. the 2.8 transmission WILL NOT bolt up to the LT1. The belhousings are very different. You need a V8 trans for the V8 engine.
One more thing, the 5 pinion planets in the 4L65-E are not an upgrade. Yes, they well handle a bit more torque, but time and again it has been shown that they tend to crack, and often explode at the higher RPMs that a modded LT1 will achieve. Good for low RPM trucks, bad for high RPM sports cars. If you want more proof, look at the top 700/4L60-E builders in the country(Pro-Built, CPT, etc). NONE of them use the 5 pinion planetarys.

You do not need a throttle body from a 93. I went and got a tv cable tiddy for a carb and drilled it out at the same place it would be if it were factory. I bought the 93 tb bracket for 5.50 from the dealership(connections) and was on myt way. DO NOT SPEND 300.00 FOR A THROTTLE BODY. Spend 15.00 and do it the way I did it! If you need part# or help pm me and i will be glad to help
The 93 Firebird/Camaro 4L60 has a different electrical connector than the 700r4...no big deal, its only like 3 wires.
I dont know how the vss works on the 93, if its like the 94-97s 4l60e's or not.
Beedo discovered you don't need a 93 TB. Holley makes a $5 adapter for 94-97 LT1 throttle bodies. Since you have a 93 LT1, dont worry about it.

Beedo - could you post that part number for the thing to attach to the throttle body? When you get around it...

awesome to know guys. yeah the lt1 i have is complete....all belt driven accessories, computer, wiring. thanks for letting me know about the bell housing of the 700R4. i would of felt like a dumb a** trying to mate that up. also, i heard something about the a/c compressor....that you can delete it, add relocation brackets, or modify the motor mounts....which is the easiest without deleting it?
If you want to spend the almost 400 bucks on relocation brackets for the A/C you will have to modify the passenger side clamshell (which you will need from a SBC, any year will work) and the crossmember (with a BFH) for the compressor to fit.
New Member, 1st post. 86 T/A 305 carb auto, very dead engine. Just acquired a 94LT1 MT from the radiator to firewall w/ hareness & ECU. From early reading indicates a wealth of info available covering many areas of intrest for gen3 owners. Other rides include 76, 79,& 80 TR7 Triumphs,82 Yamaha M/C,92 Chev P/U & 04 Infiniti G35. Shop tooling includes lathe, mill, drill press, sander, wirefeed & oxy/acetelyne welder + handtools. Too many projects, need more time!!!! USN RET
The V6 700R4 is different than the V8 700R4. The Bellhousing on the V6 is for a 60* engine vs the 90* V8. Now a 700R4 from a 4.3 V6 will bolt up since it is a 90* V6
Beedo notified me that the part number was hly-20-40 or 20-40. I got the part at O'reileys for $8. It is a bolt that has a stud on it for the TV cable. It comes with a lock washer and bolt too. One expensive bolt but cheaper than a new 93 throttle body. Not sure where i'm going to drill the hole for the bolt but i'll figure something out. Beedo also mentioned the bolt had to be shortened a little bit to fit.
I have a 90 trans am with a 93 LT1 and 700R4 works flawless...built the tranny up crazy good too.
My problem is I never did the swap the previous owner did, and he never connected the speedometer. I have no idea where to start to find out how to get it connected.
