4th gen dash swap, 90% done need help!!

I am running an LS1/T56 and full dash and console out of a 01 camaro. So its all mounted, lights, hvac all wired up, the back lights on the cluster work along iwth the volt meter, and oil pressure gage. The odometer light, tach, speedo, gas gage, and water temp gage dont work, looking at the schematic it seems they all run off of the serial data wire from teh computer? There is a tach wire on the pcm however there is no white tach wire on the dash connector? Again looking at the schematic it says the Tach output connects to the ABS system? Does this go to the ABS wire on the cluster connector??

please help! thanks!!

PS the motor runs great just need the misc gages to work!!

Re: 4th gen dash swap, 90% done need help!!

I've got the same issue w/ the same gauges not working.
I have two gauge clusters (01 camaro and 98 firebird) and both act exactly the same way.

Weird.

Re: 4th gen dash swap, 90% done need help!!

The blue and white plugs on the LS1 harness are supposed to plug into the 4th gen dash harness on the passenger side. Did you get the 4th gen harness with the dash?

Re: 4th gen dash swap, 90% done need help!!

Yes i did but insead of using the dash harness i found it easier to just use my 3rd gen harness, and splice on the 4th gen gauge cluster connector since thats all that really changed, i plugged in the white and blue connectors to the engine harness and wired whatever i needed on the gauges. I've gone over all my grounds, and +12v's, the only thing that could be wrong is that the data link wire isnt doing its job? Obviously the PCM is working, its just not talking to the gauges. I'm gonna trace this wire and make sure everything connected the way its supposed to be, hopefully i find something.

67 Camaro 88, is your car running? are u drivnig around without using these gauges or are you on hold trying to figure it out like i am?

Re: 4th gen dash swap, 90% done need help!!

To be honest, I would use the 4th gen dash harness, will make it soo much easier and everything will work.

Re: 4th gen dash swap, 90% done need help!!

no way cuz then u have to trade out fuse panels and rewire everything else in the interior instead of just the gauges. much easier just wiring one connector on the gauges, one for the lights, one for the hvac, its cakewalk.. I know this little issue i'm having is just that one data link wire, i will update tomorrow if i figure it out.

Re: 4th gen dash swap, 90% done need help!!

It has nothing to do with the one data link wire, that's for the ALDL, the oil pressure, temp, tach, speedo, etc etc comes from the blue and white connectors on the LS1 harness. Trust me on this, I've stripped many 4th gen cars. And no you wouldn't have to rewire everything else in the interior, just splice in the main power wire to the fusebox, and going to the headlights.

Re: 4th gen dash swap, 90% done need help!!

I can drive mine, but I am still working on it. 4 of 6 injectors are dead so the car is only running on 2 cylinders. Long story. I've got injectors coming in Monday so that issue will be fixed.

I swapped a 2002 3800 T5 drivetrain and swapped the remainder of the front end wiring/dash/console from the front end of a 2001 3800 T5 Camaro. There are quit a few wires that are not connected, but they are to things that I don't need or havent wired up like doors, radio, hvac... I feel like the gauge issue is a stupid mistake and I'm just not sure what it is.

Re: 4th gen dash swap, 90% done need help!!

klortho, obviously u need to strip a few more ls1's cuz u dont know what your talking about. The serial class 2 data link wire goes to your aldl connector and to your intrument cluster, and to a few other places that are not needed in a 3rd gen car so i will not bother bringing them up in this discussion. Guess what? Your data link wire goes thru your blue and white connector if you have done so many ls1 cars you would know this. Your oil pressure, voltage, speedo, etc are direct signals from the sending unit or source (oil press sending unit, water temp sending unit, etc incase you done understand what i mean). Other gauges such as the , odometer, tach, fuel level, recieve their signal from the PCM which acts as the sending unit, thru "yes u guessed it" the data link wire. Pull up a GM schematic or i will post one and u will see that the gauges i listed above work thru the data link.

Actualy screw it i will end this arguement right here so we can get on and try to find answers since i'm not the only one with this problem.

Thanks.

Re: 4th gen dash swap, 90% done need help!!

67 camaro 88, sounds like a cool setup u got. This gauge problem is something stupid, it has to be since the 3 gauges that are not working are all recieving their info form the same source, the PCM simply isnt talking to them. I will figure this out one way or another, doesnt seem to be many people who have swapped the motor and interior as a whole, seems to be one or the other. Gotta love being the guiny pig.

As for the dash harness klortho, it is more complicated than your making it out to be obviously you havnt done it. I know your frame of mind is telling you it would be a direct plug and play, but this is not the case. yes your white and blue connectors would plug in as well as your gauge connector, but you would have to switch your fuse block, rewire your entire stereo, power window connectors, power lock connectors, interior lights, door switches, rear hatch, lights front and back, its alot bigger job cutting all the 3rd gen connectors and splicing them onto the 4th gen harness as opposed to cutting your dash connector, hvac, and light switch and splicing on the 4th gen connector, not to mention 90% of the wires are the same color from the 3rd to 4th gen so its very simple.

Re: 4th gen dash swap, 90% done need help!!

if everything is up and running, you can adapt an autometer sending unit into the head and run a wire right to the back of the watertemp guage.
ive heard a 98 model sending unit will work too, but the autometer was only 8 bucks, and i already had an adapter. the GM unit is about 40 bucks?
worked great for me, ive got a dash swap and a carb(no ecm)
good luck with the rest.

Re: 4th gen dash swap, 90% done need help!!

I'm swapping the dash in my 94 to the 2002 dash, here is the break out I made and added to from where I got the inital info, if it looks gabled click on the picture so IE goes to full size on the picture. Middle column is if your using a 97 cluster and the part number to the 94 and 02 is top RH side of thier respective column.

Hope this helps,
Tony

for the love of GOD! this link better work this time....grrr,
go to the 4th gen tech photo's two different sizes, thats all let me know if you need anything else I should have a complete 1994 & 2002 pin-out spreadsheet done next week if anyone needs it, PM me

How did you get the AC controls to work if you used the third gen body harness?

Cheers,
Richard.

by looking at the setup of the car, and the wires i can see running through the drivers side vent, i doubt he has a/c.
just a guess.

id be willing to bet he bought them all separate than put them into the old gauge spots, or made another plate for them to fit, but thats just my opinion

Whats the point??? I posted a response to a newly bumped thread. I couldnt delete the post, so I edited out MY repsonse to something earlier in the thread. The last person who bumped it still had a valid question. Oh wait..that was YOU. Instead of my comment taking away from your question...I edited it. Wasnt saying there was an issue with the thread being brought back. I was saying MY post was sort of off topic being that I was commenting on something from a few months ago, that didnt pertain to YOUR question. Then those people that actually do search (you included) wont have to read past my out of date, off current topic response. See my point now? Relax.......

Since Im actually a nice guy who likes to help people out, and Im sure it was just a mis-understanding of my post, here are some links that should help you with your actual question, since no one responded to it.

Re: 4th gen dash swap, 90% done need help!!

calm down guys, its a forum, questions will be asked.. I deleted my AC, never used it and it weighs too much

I got my Autometer gauges straight from autometer, went to a big drag race in Norwalk Ohio, went to the Autometer stand and he gave me a sick discount i couldnt pass up plus no tax. I took a piece of sheet metal and made my own panel, mounted the gauges, made my own harness and bam, looks hot, everyone loves it, the LED lights are definatley freaking bright tho, i look like a smurf driving my camaro.

Actually i was annoyed b/c i managed to read ur original post (prior to editing) in the email notification i received and was interested in what you had to say..

Thanks for the links though.. Looks like most folks use the 3rd gen body harness then, correct?

Re: 4th gen dash swap, 90% done need help!!

haha..well why didnt ya say so! I felt kind of like I was repeating what was already said... so I didnt want to clog up the thread with old stuff that was already there. I would have left it if I thought it would have done good. No hard feelings...

From what Ive read, it seems like the 3rd gen harness is close enough that it can be retained and modified to work with the 4th gen controls. There is something with the vac. connections that is goofey..something about the "blend" feature than 4th gens have? But elec. wise you should be good to go with the 3rd gen stuff.

The only way Ide say you'd need the 4th gen wiring, is if you were swapping EVERYTHING over to 4th gen. Modifying the firewall for the HVAC box and all that jazz. I used ALL the 4th gen A/C parts, but retained my 3rd gen controls. I plan to switch to 4th gen controls, because I want to relocate the controls into the console. Im putting in a touch screen in the radio pod. And with the 4th gen controls, you can actually separate them since they are ***** as opposed to sliders. Hence the reason Ive been lookin into the swap over.

There are some good write ups showing the swap...but when I do mine Im going to do another. Try to fill in the gaps and enforce the write ups that already exist. Its always good to see a couple different people do it. But I dont imagine it will be done soon enough to help ya...unless you wait til summer. I have to get my second LS1 swap underway and finished before spring is over, then my other projects can get goin.
