bouncing off the rev limiter at 5000rpm????

Ok I put a 95 lt1 in a 87 firebird and last year the car ran great. Since then i rebuilt the tranny and strocked the lt1 to a 383 with a direct port nitrous. So I go to the track this weekend to run the car and dial in the nitrous when on my first pass I notice that I bounce off the rev limiter at 5000 rpm.

I scanned the car and the only code that I came up with was code 97 (4K pulses per mile fault) which I had before I went racing. Eairlier in the week I replaced the vss try to get rid of the code but it was still their.

I also do not have the speedo hooked up to see if that is working properly. I bought the cable x to convert the 4l60e electronic signal to a mechanical one, its just not hooked up yet. S that does not help.

I reciently had the computer redone to set it up for the added cubic inch and nitrous, could the problem be in the computer and tied to code 97? Could the problem be that the injectors are to small? Could it be the tranny?

Thanks for you help

had a similar problem to yours with a 95 lt1. i took it for a testdrive and romped on it hard it spun and kept spinning and hitting rev limiter, come to find out the computer was accidently programed for a m6 instead of a a4. naturally how you would tell is to see if itll shift out of first.

Re: bouncing off the rev limiter at 5000rpm????

I am thinking that the problem is in the computer and it is the reason I am getting code 97. It is shifting fine when driven normally, but when at wide open it bounces off the rev limiter?

Could it be in limp mode, with a lower red line?

Firebirds from 1986-92 should have electrical speedos and you won't need a cable-x converter. Just hook up the output to the 3rd gen speedo wire. If you hook up the speedometer wire, it would probably get rid of code 97.

I'm not sure whats causing the rev limiter problem. To get my old thirdgen tach to work right, I had to get the tach signal directly off of the coil, not the tach signal that comes from the pcm.

Do you happen to remember which wire you hooked it up to? Mine works, but drops out after a certain RPM with it hooked up to the signal wire from the PCM.

In my notes I wrote: White/black wire, ICM connector pin B. The ICM connector is the one with 4 prongs on it. It says ABCD on the connector. I just looked at it now and it looks more like a yellow with a black stripe but maybe its dirty.

Re: bouncing off the rev limiter at 5000rpm????

Its an 87 firebird and it has a mechanical speedo. last year the car ran without the speedo with no problems or codes?

My gut is teling me that the computer was messed up but I am unsure.
I have accsess to a scanner can I scan the tranny to see what the vss is doing? What should I look for.

Is it possable that my injectors are too small and starving the engine at 5000rpm?
