Plenty of room. LS2 into a 94' Mazda RX-7!

It's an engine swap...not sure if it's appropriate to list it here but I thought that since it's an LS-2...why not?!

My brother decided last year to remove the twin-turbo mill from his 94' RX-7...after it blew apart of course...and replace it with something more reliable and easy to tune. The engine, tranny and electronics from an '07 GTO with 3 miles on it seemed to be the perfect donor.

After a DEEP breath the operation begins..........

I think he's out to beat me!

Well, from looking at the 3rd pic in the original post - Yeah, looks like there's room all right... Where did he get the motor plate from? I was using threaded holes at the front & back of my engine...

They didn't make an '07 GTO... Only an '06 GTO Which Got the Ls2, while the '04-05 got the Ls1. Gotcha dad!

The engine plates are pretty common. I'd imagine summit would be a good source.

I've attached a couple of "before" pics with the Japanese stuff in the engine bay...turbo thingies and junk like that. With all of it out of the way there apparently was room.

Not quite true. '04 got the LS1, '05 & '06 got the LS2.

I became painfully aware of this when looking for an LS6 intake for my '00 LS1 ('01-up LS1's all got LS6 intakes). The one I was sold (remote sale) was said to be an LS6 intake, but neither p/n nor vehicle removed from were given. After it arrived and it was obvious it was an LS2 intake, the seller finally admitted it came off of an '05 GTO, which had an LS2 engine and intake, which made the intake useless to me.

Re: Plenty of room. LS2 into a 94' Mazda RX-7!

The motor and the T56 tranny is from an '06 GTO with a documented 3 miles on it (damaged during transit, vehicle was never even registered or sold, just scaped).

The swap includes the following big items to accomplish (ask me how I know... I'm the "old" guy soon to be driving this little beast with a power to weight ratio better than an '07 Corvette, and almost indentical to a '07 Z06!).
  • Custom Sub-frame
  • Custom Transmission Mount
  • Custom Aluminum Drive Shaft
  • Modified LS2 wiring harness
  • Custom 4" CAI
  • Custom programmed PCM
  • Custom 1 7/8" headers with 3" collectors
  • Custom 3" stainless steel exhaust (no cats)
  • Custom Ron Davis Racing Radiator (4" thick )
  • Custom Bump Steer "Kit"
  • Minor engine mods
Notice a trend here? CUSTOM!

These are some of the large items needed to successfully accomplish the swap. There are a ton of "smaller" details.

I will continue to update this thread for those that are interested.

Wow...cleanest engines ever...GTO's are very much sleepers...whenever i saw one i didn't think they had anything under the hood let alone LS2's WHAaaaat?

To bad they made the GTO look like everything else on the road...sigh

It never brang back that muscle car feeling...unless they were aiming for the family sedan look...

Old engine setup blew a front apex seal that took out the turbo's (common occurrence) and you can only buy reman motors at this point from Mazda (not very good quality). So I decided to go back to my roots with a slight twist .

Hinson Supercars sells a kit that makes this a straightforward bolt-in affair. My buddy had his in in 2 days, in his garage on jackstands.

He's running an aluminum radiator, LS1/LS6 intake/LS6 cam/ported TB/longtubes/hi-flo 3" cats on the y-pipe, 3.5" out to a Magnaflow muffler.

I have a walk-around video of his and I think the first fire on my youtube account. Do a search for SVTRob85.

These cars are pretty damn awesome. Curb weight bone stock is 2850, with an LS1/M6 combo, it's 2800.

You are correct, there are actually two well known companies (Hinson Supercars and Granny's Speed Shop, as well as numerous upstart companies) that provide custom built parts for the swap. I thought I'd mention that these swaps are far from being a straightforward bolt-in affair. Numerous mods are required to get the cars running (wiring harness mods, exhaust setup, etc., ect.), while still trying to retain most of the stock creature comforts (A/C for one).

werd.

We actually used Granny's Speed Shop instructions for splicing into the factory harness. He already had AC removed, so that was never a problem for him. Did lose power steering, though.

I believe Granny's can supply a harness that does make it a bolt-in affair, but I don't remember off-hand.

It's a great swap, I went for a ride in it last night. He banged 3rd at 6000rpm, and it spun the tires. Do you have any video's of your swap?

The 90's RX7's are one of the few Jap cars that make sense - light with a turbo motor that can make some power. Too bad the new ones are ugly and are slow as ballz.

I digress...

Good choice on the motor into your brother's RX7. However (and I'm sure you know) he will have major problems hooking that sucker as it is light and has the IRS that makes the GTO a PITA too.
