You don't have to use the '98 ECM just because that's what year the engine is. Just make sure whatever year the ECM, the harness is the same.

Re: 98 ls1 swap into third gen problem

the 98 ls1 isnt the best but its no ticking time bomb like some may want you to think. if you look around there are many 98 ls1s with major mods doing just fine with the stock pcm and tune. check out ls1tech lots of them there

If you use the '98 block just get a newer ECM and harness, and then you'll just need to change a few small things on the exterior of the block like the coolant temp sensor, as the '98 is a different sensor from the '99+ I believe.

Re: 98 ls1 swap into third gen problem

Or you can repin the PCM connectors to use the newer PCMs

98's use a different CTS, but most swaps revert back to it because it is quite handy. The alt wire also changed. They used a dummy light in the 4th gens. Swaps need an inline bulb or 470ohm resistor. 99+ alts are regulated directly by the PCM

Knock sensors had a special connector, but thats contained in the under intake mini harness. It interchanges freely with all GEN III LSx harnesses

They also had the coils mounted directly to the valve covers, so you cant upgrade to the stringer truck coils or use pretty much anything aside from a Fbody coil

Re: 98 ls1 swap into third gen problem

Nothing at all wrong with the '98 model motors, I have a 4th gen that's a '98 and it just turned over 184k miles on it (yes it is all stock.....for now) but my 4th gen guru said that anything you can do to a 99+ you can do to a '98.
