tossing belts like its my job
Been tossing belts lately non stop, seems the tensioner spring can't keep up with how quick the motor revs and the belt gets slack for a second and then the pulley bends forward and the belt walks right off. Bought a speed inc solid tensioner and the buick 3800 supercharged idler pulley dayco #89009 which has higher grooves cut into it and haven't had an issue since, hopefully it stays that way. Did have to add 2" total length to run that new pulley as its larger diameter. Anything over 7000 rpm and off it went, hopefully now that's all done

7k's pretty high, but glad to hear you've got things under control. i never liked the idea of pulleys without shoulders (like the giant bell we have for a water pump). I had my belt fly off in my GTP (similar water pump pulley) because I hit a puddle, no fun.

Solid mount idlers are not tensioners. Serp belts are designed to stretch as seen with the tensioner being on a spring. When its static. Ask the SC guys about that who havent added a blue million high ridge idlers
To the OP, make sure your pulleys are lined up and bearings good. Bad tensioners and bearings are the most common reason for belt loss on LSx engines

Tensioner is brand new as was the pulley. Apparently they don't have a very long shelf life above 7k. I know that after 50 miles or so you're supposed to redo the tension on the belt, then check it periodically with a solid one, no different than sbc engines for the past 25 years.

If you converted it to a V-belt then set a static tensioner, the problems wouldnt be here. Its a serp belt and they're designed to stretch

I started shredding belts after a round of mods... I blamed it on my p/s pulley being out of alignment.
I put the supercharger pulley on, and adjusted the belt size (car came with an ASP underdrive and the belt was too long). I havent had an issue since and Ive touched 7k on occasion. Though I was throwing them way before that.
You should be fine with the new pulley and everything else in check.

I hit 7K daily.... at least once or thrice. Gotta love the sheer terrifying WAIL of LS1 fury roaring through a single Aerochamber at 7K....

We just finished a custom 3.5" stainless exhaust through a single in/out Aerochamber on my nephews car.... Pure horrifying TERROR wailing out of that thing now. Its one of the scariest sounding street cars Ive ever heard

Re: tossing belts like its my job
i get alot of the typical, "what are you running?!?!?" comments when i'm at the track cause of the cars tone through 3" dual x-piped exhaust with bullets. anything over 4,000 rpm sounds like the world is coming unhinged.
i'm running a stock replacement tensioner and pulley. steve, i know you're not running ps, how do you have the belt routed from the alternator to the water pump? do you have the factory smooth idler with the belt going under the pulley (similar to stock) or are you running a grooved pulley with the belt going over the pulley? (this would give more wrap around the water pump) i'm running it the second way and don't have any problems.
here's an old picture, but it'll give you an idea:

Re: tossing belts like its my job
Just the water pump, crank pulley, alternator and the new solid tensioner now. No extra pulley like you run, probably because with the smooth pulley it wouldn't work, never thought about adding the grooved pulley to flip where the belt is routed. I'm taking it out to another car show tonight, we'll see how it ends up doing, luckily I have another spare $32 belt in the back of the car now in case something happens, but had no issues putting 60 some miles on it the other night so hopefully it's all done.
