Re: 90 RS, gettin the LS1/T56 and other goodies

Alright everyone, been quite a while but ive been going back and forth with a 100 other things, and working on my z28 instead and it should be leaving me shortly in the next week or so, getting traded.

So I still have no garage but, I reluctantly pulled the car off the back of the property to the driveway and I'm going to try to get back on track with the build. So its been nearly a year since I've touched the car unfortunately and the elements haven't helped anything. It sat through the last hurricane we had down here. and has been sitting in grass since june. I'm going to try to start the body work and get what I can done, there are hundreds of issues that need to be addressed.

First off, I,m going to strip the remaining interior. and start sanding down the body to prep for all the dents that need to be pulled and a lot more rust than I think was there a year ago. I'm almost afraid to look under the carpet to see whats hiding. I've had water sitting in this car everytime that it has rained in the last year since the hatch wouldnt shut, just fixed it yesterday to get it to latch.

Right now the car is sitting in the driveway, somewhat jacked up on wood blocks and race ramps. I did a quick run through over the body and took a sharpie and marked a lot of the issues as far as rust and dents. Theres a lot of dents on the pass. side from the wreck and I know the front of that door needs to be straightened. Both rear wheel wells look bad, the inner edges need to be replaced if not a little more.

how the poor thing has been sitting.

This'll give y'all an idea theres ton more spots than this and I still need to pull the GFX and strip the inside to find more suprises. I know for sire there are dents riddling the underbody from the wreck, and the old floor patches might be rusting again, and theres been so much water in the car...

Re: 90 RS, gettin the LS1/T56 and other goodies

So I pulled the rest of the interior and as expected, there were more surprises to greet me.

All the prior patch work was done poorly and not sealed. Honestly debating if I want to cut it out for a second time and redo it or just get a new floor pan, I also wont have to worry about scraping all that crappy undercoating off the car! Not sure yet, opinions will be nice.

Next thing I found, I remember when my friend had welded in those floor patches he kept telling me that the back portion of the car was not original, and never really looked into it since the body was straight like factory and the frame shop also said the car checked out. What I found is that it looks like they replaced the drivers side quarter panel from the weld spots on the inside of the car, in addidtion the inner part of that 'new' quarter is rusting so it looks like it will be going as well.

Now some opinions, I plan on doing this car right the first time. What do you think about replacing the floor pan entirely or just fixing the patches? And I'm really debating on if I should have a shop soda blast my car, or do it myself. The problem with doing it myself, I have no garage/shop and no longer have an air compressor or any of the tools.

I'd love to hear some opinions on my next step it would be much appreciated!

Re: 90 RS, gettin the LS1/T56 and other goodies

The choice is yours, I used to do body work before I joined the army and replacing floor pans like that is a huge job. Another option would be to repair the previous repairs. One way that I've heard that works well to remove the undercoating is spraying it simple green and then wipe it off, or use a pressure washer. If it were me, I'd try a wire wheel to see how bad the rust is before you decide on your repair.

Most likely I'm going to reluctantly bring her to a restoration shop down the road and let them soda blast it, replace the quarters and the floor pans. Not giving up on doing it myself but I know itll be done right the first time over there. Plus I'm hopefully picking up another thirdgen tomorrow we'll see how that goes.

The soda blasting is probably a good idea. That way you can see exactly what you have to work with. I found some rust under the carpet of a GTA that I just picked-up. I am just going to cut it out and have a patch panel welded in. It shouldn't be too big of a deal. Good luck with the other car you are looking at.

Re: 90 RS, gettin the LS1/T56 and other goodies

Thanks either picking it up today or tomorrow, its an 88 camaro with ttops, with a brand new 400sbc, with a stage three clutch and brand new T5. The bad part is he put the sniper body kit on the front D: but that will disapear almost instantly lol. But it will be my first ttop thirdgen and manual car so it should be a fun little fixer upper toy.
