92 TBI to 2005 LQ4 ;)

Totally sick of my 305. Its developed a stalling issue that i have been having trouble diagnosing. After being away and coming home to my car not running right i got fed up and aquired this 2005 lq4. It came with a harness and ecu so some of the battle for parts is behind me. I look forward to any constructive criticism and insight for me to finish this project. Thanks.
here's the motor

Re: 92 TBI to 2005 LQ4 ;)

Ive already swapped the cam out. Thankfully the bearing surfaces are in good shape and there is no scoring.

This is the cam im using

Im putting everything back together now so i should have everything in order in the next day or so before i pull my 305.

I was fortunate to find this 98 partout within an hour of being posted on LS1tech. I took the 4l60e and the whole belt setup with accessories and the oil pan etc. and the brakes. The car only had 57,000 miles on it.

As for the a/c more than likely ill use a relocation bracket. but the a/c wont be going in till after the swap is done.

Im gonna be using 1" setback motor mount adapter plates along with stock clamshells. Ill have some photos up close in a few. The Welds look great but ive been hearing these will start to discolor heavily over time. My 92 is my daily so they may not last long lol.

The Harness that came with my motor was a 2002 silverado 2500. Big Thanks to POCKET for making easy work of it to be plug and play for my 92.

Re: 92 TBI to 2005 LQ4 ;)

Spent the day (or past few days) changing the fuel pump and cleaning up the underside of the car. Dropping the tank is not fun alone. Unfortunately the Track bar brace? was rusted in place so i cut it out. I noticed when I had first bought the car and the exhaust was put in that it was continually getting crushed. It was suggested to me to try the BMR Relocation bar so i would have some extra play room.

Re: 92 TBI to 2005 LQ4 ;)

Your swap is looking like its going to be exciting to follow. I myself will be going from tpi to an LS motor. One question though, what made you decide what motor you wanted (besides price that is). I was originally planning to go completely LS-1 from a Firebird or Camaro, but I am keeping my options open, so that is why I am asking.

BTW, that is a very nice looking car.

I wanted whatever ls motor i could find but the truck blocks are cheaper. I was also told the truck blocks are stronger and can take a beating better. Thank you for the compliment.

Re: 92 TBI to 2005 LQ4 ;)

I got some new wheels. ROH Snypers. The Previous owner of them had 2 sets where one set was factory polished and the others were painted black. I received 2 black and 2 clear wheels . In the meantime I plastidipped the spokes to match the 2 black ones till i can get then done professionally. Didnt turn out too bad but i may try again. I accidently touched it while drying

Got my relocation bar in but noticed it doesnt have any provisions for the stock heat shield. Am I going to run into issues without out it? I dont want it banging around as well not fully mounted.

I tossed all my gas tank shields. As long as the exhaust isn't directly on the tank it won't affect anything

Re: 92 TBI to 2005 LQ4 ;)

Attempted to put the motor in today but ran into some trouble with clearances. I ended up calling it quits and will attack it in the morning. ive been having an issue getting the motor over 2 more inches back to drop it in place.
Also would anyone be able to offer some insight to the best way to install long tubes?

Re: 92 TBI to 2005 LQ4 ;)

When I did my swap I had a hell of a time getting my headers back on, as well as getting them off. I had to disconnect the steering shaft at the joint, that will give you a little more room if you haven't done that yet.

Re: 92 TBI to 2005 LQ4 ;)

Conversion long tubes are easy

With the hvac box off and steering shaft out, remove the coils and plugs. The slip right in from above no fuss

If you can get the car high enough, both go in from below with the plugs out

It looks like i may have some issues down the road with my brakes. This photo is before i torqued the bolts but are those lines too close?

yes, you going to need to do some bending of the brake lines to get them away from the headers.

Re: 92 TBI to 2005 LQ4 ;)

Ran into another minor issue. The flange on my headers interferes with the CTS by about 1-2mm. gonna need to shave some of the metal away to fully turn the sensor into place.

I moved my brake lines behind the steering shaft to get them away from the headers.

I also had my headers ceramic coated. If you can stand the non-shiny look, Swain Tech Coatings is a better heat insulator than Jet Hot.

Re: 92 TBI to 2005 LQ4 ;)

Been putting everything together. need to finish up so i can see the best way to route my intake. If i have no room i will use the small filter. With the truck coils the stock fuel rail interferes so i needed to bend the fuel inlet out of the way. I finished making my fuel line tonight so all of that will be going in tomorrow. I need to cap the heater port on my radiator cause the heater on ls cars is fed from the water pump. I have lines in place for now but they will need to be shortened. The heads have vents so i bought an aluminum fitting to allow them to vent back into the radiator.

The heads are the stock 317 heads. The only things ive done to the motor besides the accessories it change the cam, valve seals, and springs along with all new gaskets. I did some valve lapping and put it back together. The donor vehicle did have and underdrive pulley so that is on the motor as well.

What is the difference between truck coils and car coils. Can both be used with the lq4 or does the truck engine need truck coils. I remember someone was talking about it, I just don't remember where.

im honestly not sure. At the time of the interference issue I looked here and found that someone else ran into the same issue. I did find this write up though.

Pretty much how mine sounds at the moment... I'm not really motivated to do the exhaust work since I'll be getting mid-length headers with full exhaust in the spring.

Re: 92 TBI to 2005 LQ4 ;)

Spending the day troubleshooting. I have a P0300 code for misfire and the CEL is flashing. Can a cam cause a misfire on a base tune?

Re: 92 TBI to 2005 LQ4 ;)

To those of you that have your cars ls swapped what kind of fuel mileage are you getting. I went on a road trip yesterday and was only 19.24 mpg using my app. Could it be the tune or is it just a con of having a 6.0? Any input would be appreciated.
