I picked up some Camaro SS wheels

I just picked up a set of Camaro SS wheels They aren't in the best condition though. They will need to be repainted. One tire has a nasty gash in the side wall and another has a chunk missing from the shoulder which I don't think would be safe to drive on. The wheels are 17x9" and the tires that came on them are 285/40/17 Nitto NT555's. At least two of them are decent with a little tread on them.

What was funny is that a couple of days ago I made up my mind that I wanted to get some different wheels and SS wheels were near the top of the list, so I hopped on Craigslist to see if anyone was parting out any cars and BAM! the first listing was for some SS wheels for $200. Talk about good timing.

There is some curb rash and a couple iffy slight bends in the outer lip so hopefully they all hold air. If so, then I'll be one happy camper. If they don't, I just found out one my friends has a couple sets of SS wheels so I wont be SOL. Either way I think they'll compliment my Ground Control kit nicely. I was also thinking of painting these either gunmetal, silver or satin black. What do you think?

I now need some wheel adapters! If anyone has any they are looking to sell PM me. I was also debating about what size I would want to get. Everyone keeps saying 2" all around but I want my wheels to be nice and flush with the fender lip yet still not rub when I lower my car 2+". Any suggestions?

I tried cleaning these as best I could. Looks like I'll be getting one of those Mothers powerball.

Re: I picked up some Camaro SS wheels

Good buy for 200 bucks dude!! The SS wheels are one of three possible options im trying to decide on. The other two are The ZR1's in Hyper Black, or a set of ZO6's in Silver.

As far as what color to go...if you go straight satin black..you wont have much contrast with a black car. Atleast it looks black in your sig. I found this pic of the centers painted black. You may like it having a black car, and it just might look good, without having toooo much black.

Or you could paint them a nice and clean silver, and get a set of black center caps...along with a billet grill and a two inch drop...that would clean.

Just some ideas for ya to ponder on.

Re: I picked up some Camaro SS wheels

The above picture looks great. I am also considering painting just the face black or gunmetal and leaving the sides of the spokes silver.

Re: I picked up some Camaro SS wheels

definitely 2" spacers. sits nice and flush with no rubbing issues. that's what i have. look a link in sig for many many more pics. i also have eibach springs lowered it about 1 1/2 in up from and 1 rear. i might get bored one of these days and paint my spokes black. good deal by the way.

You know Dave, your car was what made me decide to get SS wheels.

Re: I picked up some Camaro SS wheels

So I ended up buying two new tires through America's Tire Co. First I tried ordering through their website and price matching onlinetires.com but I got an email back saying that they wouldn't price match them but would make me a offer at $145 per tire. So I went to the store in person and they price matched the online source without a problem.

I also received my wheel adapters yesterday, so you know what that means. I installed my SS wheels. It definitely didn't go as planned though. Apparently the center bore of the adapters were a few thousandths too small. I ended up using a Dremel, some grinding stone bits, a can of WD-40 and a few hours of my time to grind them down enough to squeeze them on, not something I'd want to do again. I wish there was a easier way.

Another problem I ran into occurred when I aired up my rear tires. I now know why I got these wheels so cheap. the right rear wheel wouldn't hold air. The inside lip was bent a little bit but enough to have a substantial air leak. after much of this , I broke out the sledge hammer and rubber mallet. After about 2 hours of continuous beating it now hold air at the recommended 34psi. If it ever starts leaking again I'll bring out the propane torch to heat it up slightly and have at it again so I'm crossing my fingers on this one.

So the front tires are now perfectly flush with the fenders. They only fit because of the negative camber that was a byproduct of the lowering (Ground Control weight jacks) I did. I had to take my fender liners out or else my tires would be sitting on them. Taking them out gave me more clearance to have vertical travel. I'm going to cut a portion of the old liner and place it back inside the well to prevent debris and water from traveling back towards the door hinges and possibly into the drivers compartment. I also definitely need to roll my fenders. I have less that a 1/4" before they rub on bums. The only place I noticed any rubbing turning lock to lock is on the battery tray. This is probably because I have taller than stock tires. I'll just give it the old BFH mod and call it good. The rears have no rubbing or clearance problems whatsoever so I have no work to do back there.

I have a hard time comprehending and calculating offset and such so does anyone know what offset and backspacing I effectively have now with the spacers? This setup is perfect in my eyes and would like to know what it equates to for future reference.

All in all I am extremely happy. Especially since everyone doubted that 285/40/17's would fit up front. I'm here to say they can.
