Re: My first Car

OP, great looking Camaro! Looks to be a good start.

massaku - wow, two of my movie dream cars! Got any more pictures of the DeLorean? I've always been fascinated by them since I became obsessed with Back to the Future years ago!

Anyways I'm 17 (18 in April) and bought my 1991 Firebird L03 during the summer. I got it for $2500; I paid $1500 that I'd saved up from my job at the radio station, and since then have paid back all but about $140, so by my next paycheck or two I should be done! She's got an almost perfect interior (got huge compliments from a 3rdgen enthusiast I met by accident, actually, thanks to the radio station!), runs really well, and after all the work my dad and I did on it over the summer its mechanically very sound now. She was running from day one, but got her really fixed up by the start of school and celebrated by getting a nice chrome open element to spice it up Only thing lacking on her is in the body department, broken fender and passenger door ground effects, and the nose. BUT.. I just got all those parts, spare t-tops, and a ton of stuff off another red '91/92 for $200.. would have had to spend $1200 on Hawk's!

Here's a pic of when I got her, of the engine bay, and me topless in front of school.

Re: My first Car

OP,
Thats a nice lookin' car, and it sounds like you made out pretty good for a beginner car. As one of the younger Third-Gen frequenters here (I'm only just 21), I figure I'll post up a picture of my car, as well.

To go with it....

I'm 16 and recently got a 92 RS v6 with 216 k miles on it. but the 2 previous owners were a mechanic and a body shop owner(my uncle)
so it is in perfect condition the interior is probably a 6/10...
better pics coming soon.

ohh and BTW don't put a z28 spoiler on it... I used to want a z28 spoiler and a 5" cowl on my v6 RS, but somebody explained it to me like this
"if you do that you are writing big dog checks that your puppy dog *** can't cash" you gotta be able to back up that spoiler with horsepower.
JMO not trying to offend you.
Thanks Guys for all of your insight. I love that Delorean. Anyways, Duke your insight is well valued thanks for your opinion, thats an interesting way of looking at it and i'm sure most of TGO agrees with you. That being said, my plan is to get a 3in cowl hood and a z28 spoiler. Then get it painted and the interior restored. Then this summer i will drop a 305 in it. But that way i have a sick looking car for summer and i can work on the engine. I dont plan on racing it so this works out great for me.

Re: My first Car

Cool man, it's your car, do what you want with it.
Once I drop a 350 in it, i'll probably get a cowled
hood on my car, and goodluck with the interior
restoration, I'm in the same situation.

Re: My first Car

***A Long Overdue Update!!!***

Well, alot has happened since my last update. Late one night about two months ago my fuel pump went out. So me and a couple people pushed it into a parking space not far from my place. Well while i was saving up money to get it fixed some mother F$&#ers decided to rip threw my interior and rip my ignition out trying to steal it!

So i get a good friend of mine that has been doing all the work in this car to tow it to his shop to fix the fuel pump and the ignition. which he put both in to begin with. anyways he calls me the next day and says it didnt need a fuel pump it just needed a new ignition. which he put in. BUT INSTEAD OF DOING IT THE CORRECT WAY, he decided to hack up my ecm and wire and aftermarket ignition into the column and run the oem ignition behind the kick panel, WITHOUT EVEN CONSULTING ME. And didnt replace the fuel pump. needless to say i was furious and i have not returned since.

It has since been in the hands of a very trusted mechanic who replaced the fuel pump and repaired the wiring the best he could. (it was held on with duct tape ) It runs good but not great, i have to keep my foot on the pedal when driving or else it will idle funny and die. I have replaces the TPS trying to remedy the problem, it helped but no cigar. It also has a SES light on so i will get it read and see what it says.

Up to today i have replaced.

Dragline.
Idler Arm.
TPS.
Idle control valve. (soon.)
Fuel Pump.
Radio. (stockish)
Ignition

On another happy note. The PO of this car took and got the wrong size tires on the front and back of the car and they are approximately 2.7 inches shorter. This means that my fender drags and scrapes against the ground with the slightest of elevation. Very frusteration but a fun car.

Next on the agenda is...

Take apart the door panel and get the lock to get re-keyed.
New tires.
SES light checked and fixed, ICV installed.
New Hood.
Paint.
Front Spoiler.
4th gen leather seats.
New Carpet.
Headliner, and Sail Panels.
Hatch Motor and Lock Cylinder.
(in no particular order)

Also a side note. While at a work related function i entered a raffle to win a new car and did! It was a junker 1996 Mercury Villager but i sold it for 2400 so cha ching!

Re: My first Car

Alright seeing as its been 7 months since my last update, i figure i should do one. Well alot has happened since my last update.
I've restored the interior back to great condition, spare the headliner and the carpet. I put brand new brakes and tires onto it. I also put a new windshield and got some ebony 4th gen leather seats to put it.
Mechanically speaking it runs pretty darn good considering the milage. I'm having a dang problem with the fuel pump (3rd one i've put in since i've owned it). I'm almost up to 5k in repair bills and parts cost. Soon it'll all be worth it.
I'm taking a mechanics class and i bought a new 3.4L V6 to swap in and a new transmission as well for 100$. Next semester, so januaryish i'll be painting it, the same color, just fixing all the paint imperfections. My house is filling up with body parts in anticipation of this. After the engine gets rebuild and the transmission goes in, the next item on the list is exhaust.

Re: My first Car

I just turned 16 and am in the process of restoring a 91 rs. The kid before me slid it into a tree so it needed body work on just that side so 5/10. Interior was pretty nice just needed cleaned and new headliner(cause it was falling down) and needed a new dash so 7.5/10. It is going in for paint next week in which i am very exited about!! Its going to be jewel red! Can't wait hoping to finish it by next spring. I think its awesome how all us 16 year olds love these camaro!! They are awesome GO CHEVY!! lol
