so i'm starting to get tired of cowl hoods...

and you'll either love this or hate it. i imagine there will be a big group of folks that don't like it. i did this for a couple of reasons:
-i've spent money hand over fist on aftermarket hoods that don't fit right, or i'm not quite happy with the shape of the cowl, or whatever.
-i don't have the hood clearance to run a stock flat hood. i wanted something that was going to allow fresh air into the engine without restriction, and i wanted it to fit without reinventing the wheel for body lines to line up.
-i've never seen this style scoop on one of these cars before so i wanted to try it out. it was only $86 after i took another part back to summit so i picked it up this morning.

let the skepticism begin!

to let you know, i used stainless steel button head fasteners. i'm not planning on doing much else other than repainting the hood. i'd rather it look like an obvious add-on then to try to make it look like part of the hood since fiberglass and steel expand at different rates. i knew it'd just crack later anyway.

well, let me know what you think...

Re: so i'm starting to get tired of cowl hoods...

To each his own.

That scoop reminds me of the old scoops on some of the late 60's Mopars.

Did you cut a hole into the original hood to let air in? I am assuming so.

In my own opinion......um........no. Looks like one of the 3M stick on fake scoops from auto zone. I like the fact that you want to go with something different.

Re: so i'm starting to get tired of cowl hoods...

I want an SS hood but Just to have a "scoop" on my hood I went with one off an 84 turbo mustang. Not to big and not to tall. I think this one is a bit over kill but it's your car man, rock it if you want too.

It's too bad you can't fit a flat hood. That thing would be a sick sleeper. I kind of like that scoop though. In a Dukes of Hazzard kind of way....

Re: so i'm starting to get tired of cowl hoods...

it's a summit brand scoop. they call it the "mach 1 style" so i'd assume it's a larger rendition of the late 60's/early 70's ford scoops

I like it but its not something I would do to my own car. It gives it a Mad Max kind of look.

How tall of a hood do you need with the LS engine and Vic Jr Intake? I have a 2 1/2in cowl hood, do you think it will clear with a drop base 3in air cleaner?

Re: so i'm starting to get tired of cowl hoods...

hahahaha i have the same scoop in the garage, i used to have it on my TA hood years ago to cover the air cleaner. Its an early mustang style scoop right? I even had it riveted down like you did.

it looked pretty mean coming down the road, but i couldn't find a way to properly blend it to the hood for paint, so i scrapped the hood and bought a cowl.

Re: so i'm starting to get tired of cowl hoods...

like i said, it's a SEMI-permanent solution. i have another solution in the works, but this may be on the car for some time unfortunately. i like it some days, and hate it others.

the motor will clear your hood just fine jbenge. my 3" cowl hood clears my non drop base cleaner. my cowl hood was in bad shape. it was doing some crazy flexing at 120plus...

I'd cut it in half horizontally to shorten it. 'glass it back together and paint it white. Keep your stainless rivets, thats OK...

At the very least paint it white so it looks like it belongs a little better.

Imo it doesn't look that bad at least not on that particular car would I put it on my iroc? No probably not. But if I had a base model camaro with a monster sleeping under the hood and didn't wanna blow the money on a cowl hell yes I would put it on my car

I like your car, It's a perfect third gen drag car in my eyes. No heavy gound efects, nice drag wheels, ls motor. I think if you paint it white or the whole hood semi flat black it would look alot better.

It looks ok. Just a bit bigger than the cobra jet scoop on mine, which is actually too short. I had to modify my air cleaner base so it didn't rub. I'm thinking of a bigger scoop, not sure what kind.

I like it! I think it gives the car a real mean, purpose built look. I think in terms of functionality, a factory fiberglass hood with that scoop would be better... just for the weight. Love it though!

..i get the mopar thing as well..but I see potential there. I know this isn't a simple solution, but if it was flatter and wider and curved with the slope of the stock hood, wouldn't look half bad..sort of a reverse cowl if you will..(think 'stang gt)
