Well as of today Im the proud owner of my third 3rd gen, but my first IROC. Its missing a motor but the heads, intake, and runners (Edelbrock) are all sitting in the back of the car. Its an auto car with a recent rebuild. Also has some suspension goodies installed, just not to sure what and what kind. First thing on the do do list is make the already pretty straight body even straighter. Being that the motor is out Im going to do a complete color change and since I like to be different from the norm so Im going to mix up a custom white pearl and paint the car white. Not that I dont like blue, red, or black I just want to stand out, theres not many white IROCs out there. Undecided on an accent color just yet, was thinking of mixing up a silver pearl with a clear basecoat but I think Im just going to match the grey IROC sticker on the door with the wheels and louvers on the hood. Future plans if finances allow would be a LSx/T56 swap.

I wont get it at my house until this weekend but here is a few pics of it at the old owners house when I went to look at it.

Nice. It's got a B&M Megashifter installed, That's a $230 plus. Does the trasmission have a shift kit?

Dont know about a shift kit but he did however say its been rebuilt and has corvette servos.

Okay well I wasnt about to wait til Sunday so I got my trusty ****** strap and just pulled it home myself. Car is pretty damn straight and clean for sitting as long as it has. A little worried about the ttop areas, there is a ton of silicon inside the roof. Hopefully it was put there as a preventative as I dont see any rust at all.

As you can see it came with some extras like the Edelbrock runners, pan hard, headers, and other suspension parts. He told me the trans has been recently rebuilt and I tend to believe him as its really clean lol. Other than Corvette servos I dont know what else has been done at this point. I like how it has the rear disc brakes too.

My biggest complaint is the a/c box has been removed, kinda want a/c. Oh well it can always be put back in.

Well here are some pics I took. Be free to tell me some things I havnt noticed. Im just a painter so I dont know (or arent sure) the names of some of the suspension parts.

Did some more tear down in between side jobs. Im really surprised at how clean and rust free this car is. Especially in the troublesome spots like the t tops and floor pans. As you can see in the pics one of the previous owners put silicon, and a lot of it, all around and in the innards of the t top bracing. While it may have contributed to keeping it rust free it also trapped moisture in a couple areas causing some rust. Also made it a pain in the **** to clean.

Got a little done today. Besides getting the floor done I have the doors, fenders, and front bumper ready to come off. But I have some people coming to work on the garage tomorrow so I need to save room for them to work.

Anyhow here are some pics of the floor. I used a product called Raptor Liner.




And my tails. Cleaned them up good for painting and tinting.

Yes I sprayed it, and will probably spray the underneath as well. I thought about painting it but having second thoughts about it. Now that the floor is done I can use it as a storage unit for all the parts and pieces to get them off the floor.

Started sanding and prepping all the small parts including the mirrors and the rear bumper. Front fenders, front bumper, and doors are next.

Got some work accomplished today even though I only had a half a day to work on it.
Fenders,hood,and front bumpers are finally off.



Doors are ready to come off, going to keep them on until I have room to work on them.



Concentrating on the cleaning/painting/lining under the car next. Once that is done Ill finally be focusing primarily on painting. Starting with the engine bay first. Once thats done then its full on bodywork on the car.

Id like to ask your thoughts on a couple things Im throwing around in my head.
As you know Im going to be painting the car white, pearl white. While I like red, black, and blue IROCS I see them everywhere. So Im going to be custom mixing a white pearl. I know for sure there will be a silver pearl in it but Im undecided of the major impact color to be added, green or blue. Blue is pretty common, violet is way to common and out of the question. Theres yellow, orange, red, and others but they need a lot of pearl to be seen. And when you have to much pearl it can tend to look yellow and dull. I want this car to be bright white but at the same time see the pearl. Im going to do a couple spray outs testing the green to make sure you can see it without the yellowing affect. Im also throwing around the idea of ghosting in some heritage stripes on the hood and possibly hatch.

Okay unemployment has forced some changes, most noticeably the color. My plans were to paint the car a custom white pearl and use the car as my daily. But as we speak I can not afford the two basecoats ( white, and pearl ) to continue. So today I was going through some of my paints I already have and realized I have a gallon and half of red. I added some pearl to it, like what it looked like on a spray out and decided this is the color Im going to paint it. Im also going to be putting the car up for sale when its finished. Plus that saves my custom pearl white for myself later down the road when Im back on my feet.

Here are some pics although the they dont do the color justice at all. Its much redder in person and you cant see the pearl in the pics either.

Yes, Ill be buying a kit. When it was going to be white I was thinking about painting the IROC Z on the doors, exactly like the stickers.

Thats beautiful work! Are you going to put the factory emission stickers and other lables back on it aswell?

Ha ha with that kind of work you should start your own body shop and go in to business for yourself.

Having a paint job turn out that well in your own garage is no small feat and we all have seen paint jobs that haven't gone so well before that were on a tight budget.

Ha ha believe me you would have a real good body shop business. I know I'm not the only one that wishes I had those kind of body work skills.

I've got a 1988 IROC too! Nice to see the 1988's get some special attention!

I wish it were that easy to open a shop, or I would. Ive been layed off since May and have pretty much run out of money. Ive been doing side jobs here and there to pay bills and keep my head above water. Check out the facebook link in my sig to see some the other work Ive done.

That sucks. Yeah I understand where you are coming from. The economy still is in the toliet for the most part for lack of a better word.

Lol see if some other members in your area have a body or hot-rod shop that you could work at. Between what is on your facebook link and what you are posting on here you have enough material to make a strong portfolio of what kind of work you can do.

Got some more parts done, finally getting somewhere.

I was going to ghost some heritage stripes on the hood but decided against it since I will be selling the car when Im finished.

What else are you going to be doing to the car? Are you going to restore it back to 100% stock or put a couple of speed parts on it?

New seats, carpet, gauges, and tunes for the interior.

In the motor dept Im not going to dive in too deep, Ill leave that to the new owner. It will be a 350 with hedman headers, L98 heads, possible a cam, & edelbrock runners. Keeping the aftermarket exhaust thats on it now. I just dont have the funds to do much more. Plus Im trying to keep it somewhat stock but a little less ordinary. I want to attract buyers without making them think they are stuck with a motor/trans combo they dont want. Which may happen anyway lol. I guess Im trying to build a car that is ready for a LS swap but it still running strong the way it is. If that makes any sense haha

Yeah that makes sense. It's going to be a nice car when you are finished with it.

So many people are doing LS swaps its nice to see someone stick with the old school Gen 1 small block and TPI set up like me ha ha!

how is the raptor liner you use that alot ? ive been reading about it hear and there but how is it compared to tradiltional dynomat ?

Yeah Ive used it quite a few times but this is the first time Ive used it in this type of application, normally I use it as a bedliner for truck beds. Ive also used it to line the interior of my mud truck which was great 'cause all I had to do is hose it done after.

Not sure of the sound deadening aspect of it though I guess it'd work some. I would still like to use a standard sound deadener on top of the liner.

yea that what i was woundering myself seems easier to put on but dont know many people to use it

Sanded and re cleared the hood. I wasnt happy with the way it turned out. This is much better.

Painted the headlight bucket black and tinted the lights.

What color pearl did you use ? I used a red pearl in a deep rally red paint/base including the black buckets/stripes. Our colors are almost exactly the same except (could be the because of the photos)yours seems to have a slight maroon shade to it.The black grill/insert and buckets are going to look great with the black hood louvers.(the hood louvers are the only reason I would not stripe it).
I don't see why you don't stroke the motor and keep it for your self.

Hmm well the red was a collection of a bunch of reds I had used at the body shop. Some already had pearls in it. But I did add xirillic (sp) silver and a little blue. I went light on the blue because I was worried about the red having a violet flop which I did not want.
I had thought about putting stripes on it but after seeing how well the louvers, buckets, tinted lights flowed together I decided against it. I think it would have been to much. I tinted the tails as well and Im heavily thinking about repainting the wing black to flow with the tinted tails.
And I really wish I could keep it but my financial situation isnt allowing it right now.

What is the kind of paint that you used on your headlight buckets and the grill? I wish my headlight buckets and grill looked like that.

You do really great body work.

You are going to have a long line of people wanting to buy that car from you when you get done. Hopefully you will be able to keep it though (if you can).

We should put out an add to help you get some work at a body shop or something like that.

You are doing all that work at home which is no small task. Body and paint work is very time and labor intensive. If you had an entire body shop at your disposal your skills would keep you in high demand.

Thanks a lot man I appreciate it tons. I just wish I could keep going on it but I keep running out of money lol. Hopefully youre right about people wanting it, itd sure be nice to sell it quick and sell it to someone that will take care of it.

As for the paint Im using Sikkens.

And the black on the bucket it just black basecoat with no clear. And by bucket I mean the piece that holds the lights and is screwed to the bumper cover. I wasnt sure if there was an actual name for that. I know the black on the bumper cover itself is also called buckets. Either way both are painted black only one doesnt have clear on it. The black on the cover itself was painted same time as the red and cleared over, so you cant feel the tape line.
