New daily driver 4cyl.

Been looking for 10 years for a 4cyl standard Camaro or firebird.
And I found one today right in the small town I live in.
1984 Base Camaro 4 cyi. 5 speed car. Only option I see is rear wiper, cruise and AM/FM only radio without a clock.

Re: New daily driver 4cyl.

Beautiful! Does the car wear its original paint? How many miles?

Its so refreshing to see lower trim model F bodies in good shape.

PS, I love all of the signs in your garage.

Re: New daily driver 4cyl.

110,304 miles and did you see the shape of the washed fluid tank? Correct one for 1982 to 1984 cars.
I may have to take that one out and put it in the 1983 Daytona Pace car.
Car came with:
New paint, new exhaust, new headliner, new fuel pump, new battery, new tires and new shocks.

Nice Find

Looks Like You Have Several Other Options.

Dual Sport Mirrors
Custom Interior
Rear Deck Spoiler
5-Spd. Manual
Z28's Gage Package With Tachometer

Were All Optional On The Sport Coupe In 1984

Re: New daily driver 4cyl.

That's a well kept car. I love my Z but I still have a soft spot for sport coupes. My first Camaro was an 84 SC with a 2.8. Had tons of fun in that car!

Re: New daily driver 4cyl.

Thanks for the info.
I also just seen it had the rear cargo cover option.
I did notice it because it was missing.
Had one in stock to install.
Also the sport mirrors are manual.
Gauge set, I never seen a 4cyl Camaro or firebird that had a tach.
This is why I post on Thirdgen.
Was told a GM worker order the car new with the option he wanted.

Re: New daily driver 4cyl.

Looks like a great car! A lot to be said about a daily driver 4 cyl with these gas prices, much the better that it's a 3rd gen. I wouldn't normally want a 4 cyl, but would make an exception for a car like this.

That's what they get for giving us an overweight, overpriced, overcontented Monte as our 'maro. What we really wanted was a RWD Cobalt SS with the LS2, the T56, and 315/35R17x11s at all 4 corners, with a solid Dana 44 and C5 12.8" brakes, for 2/3 the price of the 2010 V6 'maro. Leave the insulation and sound deadening out, make the radio, back seat, power windows, power locks, and a/c optional, make the C4 IRS optional, and it would have sold.

Re: New daily driver 4cyl.

May 18th - Replaced both outer window sweeps today, what a pain in the ####.
Still need to figure out why it idles high, around 1600 rpms.

May 24th - Replaced the door seals today. I have GM NOS seals and I used the one Metrok SuperSoft makes to replace them.
The difference is the NOS ones have metal in the top two parts that are big and screws go throw them.
SuperSoft don't have any metal in them.
These seals worked out good, just remember to use weather strip cement.

May 27th - Installed new outer door handles before installing the door panels. Repair engine idle problem with a new TCS. Idles around 800 RPM's now, but a little rough. Installed a new value cover and gasket that I already had from the fiero days. Boy, it had one bad oil leak as the old gasket fell into the rocker area and never sealed on the drivers side back corner. Tune up done, repaired the temp and oil pressure gauges. New center wheel caps installed that say Camaro. Now for plates, so I can start to drive it daily and sell my 1984 T/A 5.0 5 speed car.

Re: New daily driver 4cyl.

June 2nd - Well, I filled up with gas Monday and drove it this week 202 miles. It runs pretty good with the 5 speed and 3.73 rear gears.
Just fill up with gas today and it took 6 gals. So I got 33.6 MPG, not bad for a 1984 car.
Need to put new plug wires on it tonight. They came in the mail today.

June 5th - Just replaced the old factory plug wires and found another leaking vacuum line. Replaced it and it's great. Smooth idle now.

Also I had to replace the thermostat, as on cool morning the motor wouldn't get hot enough to go off fast idle.

Awesome to see an Iron Duke F-body still rolling. May be slow but at least it's a tough engine. Personally I would like a fully loaded four cylinder 1985 automatic Camaro.

Re: New daily driver 4cyl.

Would a great talking point. I know they are slow, reviled, and blasphemy in the third gen world. But...there will be plenty of access in the engine compartment to work on it and the challenge to find "go fast" items for the Iron Duke would be fun.

Re: New daily driver 4cyl.

Cheap on gas for a daily driver. I can pull the MSE or Daytona out if I want to drive a V8 car. And if I want something that will suck down the gas I would pull out the 1969 454 chevelle. This car really isn't that slow to drive with the 5 speed and the 373 rear gears. I've driven a third gen as a daily driver in Ohio for the last 10 years.

Re: New daily driver 4cyl.

im sure its a nice dd. i wish it didnt snow so much here, i might have a old thirdgen or something else RWD for a DD. what would be real nice is a 3.5 retrofit into a t5 thirdgen with 3.23 or 3.05 gears. i can get 33-35 in my heavy azz 07 monte, that should do 38 and with 240hp it should still get out of its own way.

Are you insinuating you cannot do that in a powerful car? Last I checked all my v8 vehicles crused down the road fine.

Re: New daily driver 4cyl.

I take it a nameless few come on here to anonymously stir crap every so often? Give the OP a break. It's a great thirdgen car, who cares how many cylinders it has? I have an L98 Formula and I'd have this car and happily drive it to work a couple times a week. Great find! Good to see survivors kept nice and taken care of. Obviously someone loved and took care of this car, even though it "only" had four cylinders--and that's exactly what this forum is all about, it's not only about horsepower.

You're right. It's not always about horsepower. It's how you enjoy your car no matter what's under the hood. Personally, I would like to see more Iron Duke F bodies remain with their 4 cyl engines.

Replaced all the speakers last week and there wasn't much left on the rear speakers. Sounds much better with the replacement speakers. On to the rear brakes Friday. Wheel cylinders are leaking. This is a three owner car and the second owner I got it from only had it for three months.
