First Car!

Hi all, new to the forums here. I got my very own 1986 Camaro just two weeks ago and I’m happy to have it as my first car. Bought it home, did some regular maintenance like oil change and all that. Runs and drives nicely, it does smoke a bit at idle (was told it could be burning oil somewhere). I’m not the most mechanically inclined but with patience I’m sure my possibilities are endless.

Yesterday morning I noticed the “brake” light came up on the dash, didn’t think anything of it and went about my business. As I’m driving home I notice the brakes were completely shot. I mean pedal all the way down and the car is still inching forward. I bled the brakes completely but the issue still is present. I decided to just replace the master cylinder, proportioning valve, as well as the rear rotors, pads and calipers so with everything brand new I’m hoping that solves it (should be coming in this weekend, can update once it’s all installed).

My plans for the car are still up in the air but the main issues are cosmetic as of now until I really dive into the car. Looking to swap the wheels out asap as I absolutely hate the ones it has now so any recommendations is appreciated. The Enkei TS-5 really caught my attention but I’m just not sure if they’ll fit. The car has 245/45 in the front and 275/40 in the rear. Paint job is also high on my list. I will post some interior shots soon, thanks all!

thank you, I surely will. My dad’s ‘86 has been part of the family for over 20 years now so it feels like I’m living out my childhood dreams.

Welcome to TGO! First cars are exciting. I hope you have a reliable job as dailying a 36 yr old car is not a cheap endeavor (speaking from experience as my rides are 27 and 39 yrs old haha).

Re: First Car!

Nice! The 3rd Gens are fun first cars. Started out with an 88 Iroc that I still have and then went on to a 91 Z28. Sold the 91 and now have an 89 Iroc Vert. Hope you enjoy it and learn some things. It’s a good feeling when you can say you did the wrenching on your car.

Man that was something I completely looked over haha. I mean I was aware that it wouldn’t be cheap but things are just super expensive these days, even the small things add up but I’m excited for it all

My advice - don't be afraid of junkyard parts! These cars pop up from time to time and typically you can find something that the previous owner replaced shortly before wrecking it. Even if it's not a part you need at the moment getting something like a newish alternator for $20 beats $120!

thank you for the warm welcomes, the car is surprisingly sturdy. A lot of people have actually mentioned that my car looks a bit more sturdy/stable than my dad’s car. I’m very grateful to have this in my possession, very grateful to have my pops as my personal mechanic and mentor and grateful for this platform

Yeah I’m very quickly learning that used parts are a very viable option. I’ve always been the type to replace with all brand new things rather than try rebuilding but I’m open to all options. I’m from NYC so junk yards are a ways away but I plan on making a trip to one real soon
