Roll call for Des Moines Meeting.

Hello all.

I have only received 5 emails for the meet in Des Moines.

This is to summarize the suggestions for what we can do at the meet.

First of all, do you guys want a 1 or 2 day meet? I was thinking a 1 day meet on the third saturday in June (21st). But, i think a 2 day would be alright as well, but those that have to drive into town may not have a place to crash.

June 21st seems to be open from everyone. Please let me know if this date works for you as well. If it's a two day meet, then we could do 20th and the 21st.

Ideas:

1) Rent a shelter from Saylorville lake park and do a BBQ then head to Porky's that evening to do whatever and then cruise.

2)Rent Val-Air ballroom parking lot. I put flyers up around Des Moines to attract attention, then cruise or whatever afterwards.

3)Do the hardee'c cruise on friday night and do one of the other ideas on saturday. (only for 2 day meet)

4)hang out at sonic for supper and do whatever afterwards.

5)Any more ideas are welcome!

So far i have replies from:

Aaron Kurt
Brad Noon
Josh Meighhan
Josh Ekstrum
Adam Klein

So far i dont have replies from: (TGO member names)

Kevin L.
Falcon3
Gambit69
BLUETA
Highspeedfreak ???
Flynlow92RS

If you have not contacted me, please do so by emailing me at this address: vipervenemgts@yahoo.com

please include your name, TGO name, phone number, and if the 21st will work for you.

thats all i can think of for now!

I emailed the local KCCI News Channel 8 and they might do a story of our meet! I thought that was cool. I'll keep in up to date on this.

i just emailed you
i hope we can have like a cruise from somewhere to hardees that night, so all the thirdgens can pull in, or porkies instead of hardees, have all the thirdgens parked next to each other, that would be cool.

Well I know for a fact that some of the hotels in West Des Moines can go for $25 a night through Priceline.com since we've had other car meets here in town and had people stay there. They are somewhat newer hotels too. Double up and stay for real cheap.

The Saturday meet would be enough for me if we're not going to set up a track event or anything (i.e. Marshalltown auto-x, MAM, Eddyville, etc). Hopefully I can get some paint work done by then so that it looks worthy of a show/meet. Need Porky's for sure...

next question...for those that know more about Porky's than I do...do they have a large parking lot? If so, do i need to call and ask them to use it for a gathering or meet and will it cost money? More info is appreciated from those of you that have been there before

Also, i have concluded that by all of the interest in Porky's, it looks like we will go ahead and do the meet at porky's, then dinner, then a cruise.

or a cruise, then dinner, then the meet, or whatever order you want. i think that the best order would be the dinner, then the meet, then the cruise. let me know what you all think.

on another note, what time do you want this to go down? i was thinkin maybe dinner around 6, and then the cruise and gathering around dinner? let me all know your thoughts.\

Porky's is the place for supper and an evening brew because it's a cruise night on Saturday. It's just a show up kinda place. If people get there to late, then they just have to park across the street and walk over to hang out (from like 7PM to 10PM). If we do something during the day it'd be a BBQ at a shelter or something like that.

another alternative is my back yard. i have 2 acres and we could grill there and do whatever...but i wouldnt post flyers for people to come cuz i dont want lots of people at my house that i dont know.

i think we should either do the shelter at saylorville or the meet at porkys. its on a busy road so lots of people would stop and look.

also had some flyers thrown together, i made the first one and 87transam5.7tpi made the 2nd. please reply to that thread.

I think we should run with the idea of the Porky's thing for sure in the evening. They have clubs show up there all of the time and nothing ever really gets out of hand. The new construction looks like it's all done over there too, which will make for better access to their lot than last summer. It's not like we'll have a ton of people show up anyway for such a localized gathering... now if we want to plan a huge get together for an entire weekend with racing, a banquet, car show, and awards/etc., then we've got to plan a LOT sooner in advance.

Here area a couple of ideas I have:

Gather around noon or earlier(10am) at Gray's Lake. It is a really nice park on a main road right through Des Moines. Lots of people will be there to look especially if the weather is nice.(Great for the news coverage!!!)

Leave Gray's Lake in the late afternoon for a cruise which would take us to Pork's where we could have dinner. We could cruise right through the center of Des Moines that way!

Those are my suggestions to be thought over.

If we do the 2 day thing, I really like the idea of all cruising to Hardee's on Friday night!

Could you update the list of peeps you have received confirmations from as well as those that might attend just from this board?

I noticed in the old thread it was mentioned that perhaps Pork's had bike night on Sat nights. Have we found out about that yet? If it is true, are there any ideas where to head to for dinner(I am assuming the Gray's Lake thing is where we will gather)?

BLUETA HERE

The 21st will work for me unless we get burried at work. I have sent an E-mail to Josh. The wife may or may not come. I am in favor of meeting somewhere say around 100pm so we can get to know each other. The a little cruising, eat, and end up at Porky's.

Will anyone be around on April 25 or 26 ?? I will be in town for the Drake Relays. Will be a Porky's on Saturday night the 26th. Friday I might be in Knoxville watching the Outlaws unless someone is around and wants to meet to eat out, bull****, or have a few drinks.

UPDATE, i have received a reply from todd magel at news channel 8...i will copy and paste what he said:

Hi Josh.

I would love to have a KCCI crew cover your car show. But I can't
promise it because I never know what's going to happen on any given day. I will put your note in our file for June 21st. So the crews working that day will know about it. It might be a good idea to call Saturday morning after 9:30 to talk to the reporters that day and remind them of the event. 247-8841.

Good luck with the show.
Todd

so hopefully they will be able to attend. I will call them on saturday june 21st and see whats up, but sorry guys that i cant confirm them being there.

Porky's is out for Saturday nights as of right now. I couldn't find the "big pig" on Saturday night to talk with him to see if he was holding this schedule throughout the year or not, but as it looks right now is that car cruises are on Friday nights now at this Porky's location. Not sure about the East side location, or if that location is even still open or not...

We've still got the North End Diner just off of I80/I35 on Merle Hay Road that has Saturday night car cruises to attend.

I have been thinking about this Gray's lake thing, and im not sure about this. It seems really risky to be holding a car gathering there, when we have no idea on how busy the park is going to be. The parking isnt the greatest, and i can see us pulling up and the parking lot being full.

I think we might want to reconsider somewhere in des moines with a large enough parking lot to accomodate all of us, such as the north east southridge mall parking lot, or walmart parking lot, you know a lot that is empty almost all of the time.

I would like to keep it within des moines city limits that way we will have a better turnout. Does anyone have any other ideas?

Well I'm still waiting for a call back from Southridge mall to see if we can hold it there. Once that is verified, I guess that's where we will hold it. I won't release the final version of the flyer until maybe 1 month before the show. Is that OK with everyone or shouldI release it sooner than that? If any other ideas are better than the mall parking lot than I will get the flyer modified before I release it.

I think a month advance is fine for me Josh, especially since all of the proposed locations are within about 20 minutes of each other.

Yes they have replied. I was told that there is no fee for holding our meet there, but I will need to provide a Cerificate of Insurance. This is for any liability reasons. The certificate must cover everyone in the group up to $1,000,000. There may be a fee for this, so if there is everyone may have to pitch in some money.

Also, if June 21st is a rain day, we will post pone until June 22nd. Hopefully we can expect decent weather for this.

Some suggestions...

Stop calling your get together a 'car show'. Its not. What it IS is a group of people with a common interest(their cars) that want to hang out a BS for awhile, and make a few new friends. You calling it a 'car show' makes it a completely different issue, it makes it an event. By making it an event, that makes liability an issue for people that might potentially let you use their property, hence the need for insurance.

Hooters in WDM and the Sugar Shack in Altoona are a couple of place I know will let you use their parking lot if you call and ask. They are common spot for impromptu car club type gatherings. Another place to try would be Daytona's on Merle Hay Road.

I'd stay clear the h3ll away from Southridge. I know people that had had their cars keyed at annual sponsored shows in that lot. That place is a dieing mall that mostly draws white trash, punks, trouble makers and wanna-be gangsters. Something I wouldn't want around a car I've got an AZZ load of money wrapped up in.

Just my $.02

If it's at Southridge, I'm not saying I wouldn't go, but I would have to think twice about it.

Hooters works great. They have club meetings there all the time. Daytonas has the hotel next door with the big lot they hardly ever use. Sugar Shack has a big lot too. I know a group of crustangs recently had a 'get together' that started at the Sugar Shack and ended at Hooters. If you want exposure, hanging at the Hooters or Daytonas will get you exposure.

You should try calling one of the radio stations. Lazer 103 does stuff like this sometimes. They do used to do alot of promotions with Daytonas. Connect the two maybe? Don't know. I'm friends with the DJ who goes by Clutch from Laser. Maybe I'll call him and see whatsup.

If you work at that Sears and work in tools or electronics then we've probably met. Before I moved to the CR area I lived about 15 minutes from there and always went into the store to pay my bill and buy toys. All I'm saying is the new owners of that mall are driving off all the desirable stores, leaving only a couple of biggies, and some small mom&pop small stuff. The new stores they're attracting are pretty sad IMO. That attracts....... Also heard Younkers is closing. If thats the case, RIP Southridge Mall. That place will become like one big Wal-Mart Supercenter at 3am. Pretty scary people in those places that time of the morning. Including myself in search of diapers or some other type of toddler requirements.

I think another reason we were thinking Southridge or something is because we were considering having a BBQ(which would be our get together) and then we were planning on having a show...of sorts afterwards for everyone to come and check out our vehicles. Not sure if that is what we are going to do for sure or not. ??

As for Lazer being there...it would probably be better to have it at Daytona's then since they have the hump day thing they do there and they still do a lot of promotions there. They have a bike night there but I am not sure what night they have that...would want to check that out before planning on that.

I still think Sonic is a very reasonable option if we are just going to have a get together. I am sure they would allow us to have a little thing there if we asked.

The main concern is wether or not we are going to have a "show" or not. I know that was the original plan...

drawing closer to one month before and was wondering if anything has been decided for sure? If you are going to put out flyers you will want to have those ready real soon.
Been decided if it is just going to be a thirdgen.org get together or more of a show?

Well call it whatever you want. Doesn't matter to me, cuz it is a show cuz we are 'showing' our cars off. There is no 'set in stone' definition for car show. IMO we are having a show. I have yet to receive word about my certificate of insurance.

I will call my insurance company tomorrow. If it's a reasonable amount of money, I will go ahead and get it, and we will hold it at southridge mall. I will also get the flyers finalized this coming week and I will also call everyone and remind them of the show and also to come to the site to get the flyers and print them off and post them/hand out.

3rd gen, all f-body, doesn't matter to me...I think there will be a much better turn out if it is all f-body though.

The all f-body idea doesn't sound too bad, just means more fun.

also putting in my vote to hold the get-together at Hooter's. i have been at a show there before, they have plenty of parking room on the south side and i'm sure they would put together some type of deal for us, i know there is a radio station they work with too, they could possibly get someone out there to broadcast live for us.

June 21st eh? Seeing as how I won't make nationals I think this might be a good trip then. Lots of time to plan, and its infinitely closer than Maryland.

Don't trust my car to make long trips. Gotta get that stuff sorted out.

I'll also be finishing up finals on the 15th of June. No work, or school that week. Which makes it perfect.

You should consider making a post similar to the 'memorial day party' that "LFN AT U" made. Its much easier to read than this format.

OK, heres the scoop. My insurance company hasnt called back with this certificate of insurance thing and im gonna call tomorrow and rip em a new ******* and find out what is going on.

I have considered some of these other places and I think i am going to call around tomorrow to Hooters and Daytona's and Lazer 103.3 and see what they can do for us.

The south side isnt as busy as west des moines or up on merle hay. I'll check it out tomorrow.

You all will be getting phone calls from me here in the next week or so to verify your info and see if yur coming or not and any questions you may have.

I will also have to redesign the flyer cuz it is now an 'all f-body' meet.

If you can get me a flyer withing the next week or so, I can put it in the Mid Iowa Camaro Club newsletter, that way the MICC club knows about it. Also I will post a message on the Iowa F-body list. I can deffinatly get some people coming. I honestly think the best bet would probably be Hooters. I have been to a car show their before, and its pretty good. They have the room, and i bet we can get a radiostation or something to broadcast. but for me to get the Mid Iowa Camaro Club, I am going to need some heads up soon.
P.S. Daytona's would work ok too, they have a parking lot next to them, that is owned by the hotel, but you would have to get the go ahead from the hotel to use the space there. The camaro club had a casual night there about a month ago, it worked out well, just a really Ditzy waitress

My vote is Hooters.

Hey guys, something we may want to try to add to the agenda. There's a new dyno shop that just opended up here in town... I forget the name of it right off hand, but I'll go get their information and be right back...

Oh, I've also got a a new programmer too. If someone has a working laptop (mine needs an OS reload), we could burn chips too as long as you buy the parts from Moates or something...

Well I got a price on the certificate of insurance....$455 minimum! I think Southridge is out. I called Daytonas yesturday and the manager wasnt there. They said to call back today after 6pm and ask for the manager. I will also call Hooters to see about that.

96BlownSSragtop, you may want to say something to Clutch from Lazer, I know who he is, he used to be real popular but then he went into rehab or sumthing IIRC....now I only hear him on the air on sundays. You may want to see what he says about it. I'm thinkin Hooters is our best bet cuz that way we won't have to ask the hotel by Daytona's for permission.

I'm still working on a new flyer....cuz now it's all f-bodies...67-02. Hopefully I will have it done in the next few days.
