I read in the Detroit Free Press today that legislators are trying to pass smog tests in Michigan again due to increased ozone deterioration. Since I did not own a car in 1995 (the last year of emissions tests) I do not know what is involved in the process. What I do know, however, is that my car right now is most likely illegal if they bring back emissions.

I have no cat, just straight pipes, and I recently installed headers with no smog equipped. What would this mean for me if they do reinstate emissions???? My car is an 83 so it is 20 years old. Would I qualify for an exemption or "classic" or "historical" car exemption??? Is anyone else in Michigan worried about this like I am???

A friend of mine mentioned this to me yesterday. I thought he was pulling my leg! I’ll have to do some research. When Michigan last had mandatory emissions testing, vehicles that were more than ten years old were exempt. You couldn’t renew your license plate tabs if your car didn’t pass. Hopefully, they aren’t pushing for strict testing like in California, where I believe ALL cars must be tested. Like a lot of other people, I’d be screwed.

I hope that 10 year rule is certainly the case. I also heard that last time you could just take the car to a mechanic and he would sign off on a sheet so you could renew your tabs. So all you have to do is find a shady mechanic out there and you'd be set (and that certainly isn't hard to find).

I actually called up 97.1 FM yesterday and got on the radio talking about it and how it is garbage. The DJ's seemed to back my opinion because they believe it is too much of a hassle and won't help that much. Hopefully our lawmakers will see that as well.

Yeah, I had a '91 Mustang with no mufflers, no cats, just straight pipe. A friend of mine worked at a Marathon station where they did emissions testing. He would just perform the test on his Cutlass Ciera (using my VIN #) and give me the results.

He doesn't work there anymore.

When was all this talk about bringing emmissions testing back to Michigan. I know my car wouldn't pass. No cat, no smog equipment, headers.

In yesterday's Detroit Free Press they had a front page cover article on it. Also, on numerous talk radio stations they devoted time to covering the subject and guaging reactions. Once again, this isn't FOR SURE, but they are seriously being pressured by the "tree-huggers" to reinstate it. Actually, I'm all for the environment, but not at the cost of being as slow as a Honda.

WTF!! Emissions tests!! If they come back my car wont pass and I'll be out a car. There is no way I can afford to get the emissions fixed. Hopefully they'll exempt everything over 10 yrs old.

Anybody else think that if California were to end up in the ocean, the first thimg to go sould be those tree-huggin' EPA freaks (I understand some concern for the environment, but their idea is utterly recockulous) Oh, followed by the EPA, CAFE, who the **** are they to tell me how much gas milage my car sould have!!? Hell, with all the taxes on gasoline, the government is reaping all the money. Think about it, higher gas milage=less fill ups=less money=gas prices skyrocket (my theory).

Hey guys, I will probably never need to worry about emissions in IA but I have always wondered if anyone has tried this - swapping in a newer (92 or newer) 4 banger into your car. I think all the law says about engine swaps is that the engine must be NEWER than the vehicle it is going into.

You can swap an engine in 3-5 hours and you could just share the 4 banger amongst your buddies whenever it is theri turn for an emission test.

Any body have some thoughts?? I have a cousin in Milwaukee (emissions testing) and want to give him some ideas.
