IL people where you at?

Re: IL people where you at?
Not sure where else to put this, so here goes.
It's in the genes !
Shortly after finally getting my IROC Z licensed, the grand kids wanted to go for a ride ( as grandma calls it ) in my hot rod. So I put the car seat in and buckled up the grandson ( he is 5 but really into cars trucks and trains ) and went about 2 miles outside of town and turned around. And went up to about 55 using just the first 3 gears, I look over at my grandson and his eyes are about as big as they could get and he is smiling from ear to ear, I asked if he liked that and he said YEH can we do it again ! Next time , its your sisters turn. So we pull up in front of the house and load up the grand daughter and take the same route out of town. Now I repeat the same thing for her go out turn around and go through the gears to 55. I look over at her and she senses me looking at her and turns to me ( blank look on her face ) and says " whyed you do that "
It's gotta be in their GENES lol

Still in South Pekin, still averaging a minute a week trying to fix up the ole bird. I used to motivate the Mopar crowd around Peoria about 30 years ago, anybody want to get together and swap lies? I've seen quite a few 3rd gens in the Peoria area, maybe they haven't discovered this website yet.

Sounds like some cool grandkids you have!
I'm in Elgin, about 25 min north west of Chicago. My 3rd gen is a total beater at the moment but I'm fixing it up, and my girlfriend has a really nice 4th gen LS1 Trans Am, we love to go cruising.

Re: IL people where you at?
Roselle IL here - i just completed a 350 swap on my 85 SC. Runs good, but having some low end problems. i figured with a 350 in it it would turn the tires at will, but it dogs off the line a bit. Runs like a raped ape from second gear on tho. gogt a little hood flutter going on at 70 and 80 - makes me think i need some hood pins. It still needs a bit of body work and i'm thinkin a new hood. I got the rust cookin over the drivers side headlight. seems common as ive seen it on a couple of these.
Anyone have a drivers side door that the bottom hasnt separated from the door?

Re: IL people where you at?
Naldo. Does your car buck or jerk when trying to accelerate smoothly from a stop? Could be off timing or a bad pickup coil in the distributor.
#166
Re: IL people where you at?
it doesn't buck - it kind of hesitates as you hit the gas, then jumps. more of a ramping up than a snap on acceleration. i hit it and no spin, but it will shift about 4500 and bark second, then scream up to 3rd gear, so far at this point ive had to shut it down since im not in a place where i can just get on it whenever. i do have the timing advanced about 8 degrees. the cam spec calls for 10 degrees advanced (lunati 300 bracket master) the plugs tell me im running rich, but leaning it out doesn't seem to make a difference other than taking some power off the upper end. the distributor parts are new with no arc flashings inside to speak of. i had to replace the ignition control module right off the bat, so thats new. i did have a wire problem, but put shorter plugs in and now all the wires are clear of the headers... i'm even running 92 octane fuel. it just wont snap when you hit the acellerator

Re: IL people where you at?
Sounds like the ECM may be pulling timing. Are you running the stock computer with the new cam. Check the knock sensor for good ground and double check your timing is 6-8 btdc before you adjust for the cam.

Re: IL people where you at?
i actually have the thing hardwired back to basics. the only wires to the engine are going to the water temp and oil pressure sending units and distributor. i was thinking about putting the stock Q jet back on since i had replaced the TPS and Fuel mixture control solinoids before doing the swap to the 350. I'm just not sure right now what all i need to reinstall just for the carb to work. The 350 came with a holley 750 on a high rise manifold, so i abandoned the Q jet.

My car isn't perfect 'show' quality either but I take it anyway. Be proud of what you have. Most car shows don't have any thirdgens.

Re: IL people where you at?
lol oh sorry, i don't mean its a show like that, with trophys or anything. It occurs every friday night in the summer at an abandoned parking lot and anyone is allowed to bring a car. My car isn't show quality at all, and there isn't anything too special about mine either. I've seen some really nice cars there, and some average run of the mill cars as well, and then some rust buckets. It's just fun to drive to a local cruise night and not have to pay to park my car in a "show"

Whats up guys. Im from the quad cities area but go to school in peoria. My car stays at home in the quad cities and i drive it or work on it when i get the chance. I just finished up swapping my carbureted 6.0L ls over to fuel injection. Dont see too many thirdgens around and the ones i do are usually rust buckets but there is an occasional diamond in all the rust.
