Hope you don't mind the quote of your PM, but the whole point of starting a thread would be to have advice and information posted here instead of PMs.
Did you just purchase the car? I'd think some basic tune-up parts and idle adjustments to start in diagnosing would be good if not done already.
Is it blowing any white smoke? Would be good to rule out a blown head gasket.
If you're requesting help in a thread, especially a mechanic, your location would be good to have posted since we cover all of Nor-cal.
I'm not familiar with Walnut Creek, but if you are within reasonable distance to others, they might be willing to lend a hand.
A background on yourself, since you're new, would also be a good idea.
Good luck and welcome.

Re: decent machinic
I'm sure these other guys will chime in with some information as well.
There are quite a few folks in the bay that might be able to direct you.
If there is not any white smoke, it could be your heater core, or the diverter valve that has a few lines coming out of it.

On one of my old cars I had a pin hole in the radiator. It leaked a little everytime I would drive it but not enough to drip. It was a little bit that would just cook onto the side of the radiator as it came out, might wanna check the outside of the radiator really well for green sludge.
Welcome, these guys give great advice and are willing to help whenevr possible.

Re: decent machinic
When you fill it are you doing it with the car running and the heater on? That will open the valve letting the coolant into the heater core and push out any air.

Open the cap and start it up when it's cooled down. Turn the heater on and watch it as it warms up. The thermostat has to open and let the coolant run through the engine, radiator, and heater core. If you have any air pockets you'll see the coolant level go down in the radiator as it gets pushed out. Once it starts bubbleing out just put the cap back on.
