Its almost that time again, what are people doing for mods this year??

Even though my GTA is covered in about 2ft of snow I am planning on MOOOOOOOOOOODDZZZ

This year heads, cam, and T56 are truly on the table for it. But I'm going nuts trying to decide how far I want to go with it. Also on the table is new C&C weather stripping, repainting the T-top rails, new OEM repro badges to make it look like a GTA again and an interior carpet swap to replace my extremely worn carpet. And lastly getting my 17" ZR1s powder coated, and putting rubber on them as the 16" salad shooters it rides on now are barely enough to keep it straight through 1st and part of 2nd. More power will cause me some serious issues with them.

On one hand I have the uber cheap option that will cost me nearly zero cash and provide a massive gain.

I have a set of stock alu. LT1 heads that are already setup for high lift cams, so I could run my Hot-cam already in there. Since I have the hot-cam, and the heads, the cost is merely misc parts needed for the swap.

Guys with hot-cams on stock Lt1 M6's tend to make anywhere between 310rwhp to 340rwhp with all the bolt-ons.

The next step beyond that is to move to a more aggressive camshaft like a CC503 which guys have put down near 360rwhp with but the average seems to be 340's. That is almost another 100hp, and a weight reduction of about 40lbs or so by switching from iron to aluminum heads. Its considered the largest cam you can run on stock heads besides a CC306 which is plain nuts I think in a DD capable car.

The other option is to sell my existing alu. heads with the upgraded springs, sell the hot-cam and use that cash + more to go with a LE1 setup which should gaurentee me at least 350rwhp behind a M6. However that is $1200 invested. And if I choose one of the more wild cams that 350rwhp can go alot higher because of the increased head flow.

Course, if I go for major power then my centerforce dual friction clutch won't be enough, and I'll have to spend $$$ to upgrade that. And I'll need radials, and I'd need to pray daily for my rear end so it doesn't go boom.

Not really modifying, but fixing the GTA. Owned it for over 15 years and it just turned 40K miles, been in storage for 9 years or so. What started as a few hoses and belt, has turned into a good winter project. Replaced a bunch of parts and hope to have together in a few more weeks. Can't wait for the warm weather and to drive it again for the first time in 9 years!

Re: Its almost that time again, what are people doing for mods this year??

Things are beginning to pick up speed.

Bought a reproduction GTA badge kit from GTAEmblems.com for my car, so I should have those in a bit.

I've got a throttlebody and intake out for porting, as well as my heads now too. Still have to decide on a cam.

Getting ready for the 6spd swap too as well. Need to pick-up some misc stuff for that like a lower shift boot, and try to find a short shifter for it.

Once done porting my wheels, throttle body, and intake will be going in for powdercoating, I need to decide on a color for the intake and TB, the wheels are going to be white though.

Need to buy injectors, hardened push-rods, and other associated things or the heads/cam upgrade. Then tune the engine. Which if I do it, will take a while. If I pay someone will get done faster, but more $$$.

So this year at ThirdgenFest I should have a respectable ride.

Last auto-X of last year tech inspection pointed out my front wheel bearings were a little loose. I intend to tighten them up. Everything else is on financial hold.

Re: Its almost that time again, what are people doing for mods this year??

last winter/spring was all about my engine build/swap and interior swap.(photo album on profile)
now this winter/spring is all my suspension mods. i so far have only gotten my eldelbrock adj torque arm, hotchish sub frame connectors, adj panhard bar, wheel spacers, 18' rims...and all i have left to buy is boxed LCA's, eibock sportline springs (this weekend), new tie rod ends, ball joints, and rear disc calipers!!! woo hoo
next winter/spring will be all body work. although iv been wantin to do better heads and cam for my engine...idk kinda pricey

Re: Its almost that time again, what are people doing for mods this year??

I just drove my TA to work today so I'll be listing things already done this winter.

For the '91 TA..
changed all the fluids, new plugs, new wires, new distributor, new injectors, and a passenger headlight mechanism. Lastly I added a new to me Edelbrock cat back, new cat, and custom y-pipe shown below. I'm still running the stock manifolds.

For the 86 IROC
fixed an oil leak on the rear diff which requires removing the whole unit.

Then I installed the road race seat and 6pt harness seen below. Also installed new MOOG front springs cut a half coil(should be about 888lb/in now). Flushed and installed ATE super blue brake fluid, installed Hawk HP+ pads all around, rebuilt the front calipers and replaced a pinched brake line in the rear. Purchased but not installed yet are new rear camber rods from Banski Motorsports, and a 36mm front sway bar.

Re: Its almost that time again, what are people doing for mods this year??

Well got the heads/cam sorted out.

Ported stock LT1 heads, lots of little things.
ported LT1 intake
ported throttle body
LE camshaft (226/232 @.050" lift, .578"/.574" lift, 110LSA)

Still need to buy injectors, pushrods, and other misc stuff.

I may look into an external oil pressure gauge simply because its more accurate than the stock gauge. And mind does not work (just pegs itself as soon as IGN is turned on).

ya....STILL not a problem....

you're WAY over analyzing it. I had a stock 115k mile shortblock that I ran a 242/246 cam in with 10.5:1 compression with vortec heads, it was a BLAST to drive above 3000 rpm up to 6500.

cereally.

Thats higher than I want to risk shifting this car at. For as many people who have shifted that high on a stock block, there are just as many who have blown a motor, maybe not explosively, but a knocking motor is all the same. 226 is plenty high enough.

I want this motor to last. I think i'll be able to make PLENTY of power on this cam.
