Drive Shaft Loop

Ok, it has to be 2” wide, ¼” thick and within 6” of the joint…

Yea, fine

Is there anything about how it has to be attached? I mean if you look at some of them like the spohn one it’s just hanging out there, the attachment point isn’t as strong as the loop actually has to be. I’ve heard of people attaching them to the torque arm… again, probably not that strong.

So are there any rules about how it has to be attached? (whatever I do will be strong enough, but I don’t want to run into “well, the rules say that it can’t _____” or "I don't like how it ____"

As long as the thickness, and dimensions coincide with the rulebook. Also, I believe it can be no less than 6" from the u-joint. Lakewood sells one that bolts to a third gens floorboard. Fits the floorpan contour. Only problem with that particular one is, if you have a 3" driveshaft, it will contact on the torque arm side. Ask me how I know? If I didnt get mine modified, I probably would have used another type, or had one custom made. The best bet, IMO, would be bolting it directly to the floor.

I have the Jegster one for our cars. Works good for me, took about 15 minutes to install.

Mine (Jegster) is just bolted through the floor boards with some additional plating on interior side to help distribute load should something bad happen. 4 years, 6 track techs and no problems. As long as they look under the car and see the loop your fine.

FWIW, yes if you have a 3" driveshaft, be prepared to modify to fit. I bought the jegs unit since I liked the 1 peice loop (easier on DS if it broke spinning in a circle as opposed to trying the oblong thing, but I literally had to cut off both mounting arm, bend and add extensions to make it center my DS and not rub.

Huh… so I take it that my 3.5” metal matrix composite shaft will be a problem…

Any pics of one installed? I'm wondering where the tight spots are

The only thing the rule book stipulates is "securely mounted". This, like many other things in the book are open to interpretation, and you just have to use your best judgement. Mounting the DS loop to the torque arm (IMO) is not a good idea.

Good point, I agree. You cant get any more "secure" than the car itself.

Also, if you have a 3" shaft, AND a Mufflex "Y" pipe, then it gets even more complicated. With a loop, the "Y" wont even bolt back up because the loop is in the way. I spent about an hour under my car, with a sharpie, a measuring tape, and a cardboard template, to get my lakewood just right. FWIW, if you have to modify a loop, the Lakewood is most likely the best one, as it comes in pieces, and you really only have to modify the bottom part. Just my

The custom one, I guess. Its especially for the Third Gen. Dont have a part #, but it kind of looks like a octagon when its together.

I modified the "universal" one and bolted it to the bracing on my GW torque arm (in the spot with the 4 holes for a d/s loop). It's oval but clears (barely...3.5" shaft). I went ahead and sprayed blue machinist dye on the shaft to see if it touched during normal driving (just in case). No marks yet. Must not be beating on it hard enough!!

Hey tim, any pics of yours?

I finally got some work done on the car towards the end of the week and then I got tied up with some BS and a flooding basement and haven’t touched anything for a few days.

My current thoughts are that I’m just going to get one of those DS loop rings (why can I not find any of them now, I think Comp Engineering and a few of the others used to sell them fairly cheaply, it’s just a ring made of some 2”x1/4 stock that you weld up to any structure you want to build, looks like the end of the spohn loop) and either attach it to the tranny crossmember or to a beefed up section of the TA (like what GM did with the 2 piece shafts on the v6 4th gens)

Thanks Tim, that’s not bad either… so it’s a universal cut up and welded back together and strapped to the TA assembly… gives me some ideas.
