new gear..feels good

been runnign 28" tires and 4.11 gears forever, with the new engine i stepped upto 29x9 tires and last time i ran a few sets of 29" tires it killed me...serious overall gear reduction from added rollout. So now that i'm sticking with the 29" tires, i jumped upto 4.56 gears. 4.30's woulda put me right back at where i was overall with the 4.11's and 28" tire, but figured this 3700lb tank needs a lil more omph to get going and it wont hurt.

FINALLY got the car all put back together tonight, in dash tach took a dump, anyways; took her for the maiden voyage to top the tank off, put a few miles on it to make sure no other bug would show up before opening T&T this weekend...weather it be the good air right now, weather it be the first time back in the car since last fall...but this thing feels completely different than it ever did before...she feels nasty strong!!!!

I'm actually very excited for Saturday, hope the weather holds, hope the engine holds and hope for 10.50's right off the trailer without tuning. trying to get the new to us enclosed trlr put back together, had it gutted until last night running all new electrical service/outlets, wife painted it today, hoping to get flooring installed tomorrow after work tomorrow night so i can start making the bathroom area. then i just have to figure out what i'm going to do for cabinets...busy week, but hopefully saturday it'll pay off!!!

Re: new gear..feels good

when you finish that trailer up, when should i expect it free to borrow

Here's a question for you josh, everyone tells me to swap to 3.50 gears and 28" tire for this turbo. Would a swap to 29.5 or similar slick get me closer to the same thing with my 4.11 gears now or would I have to be running a super tall tire to get even in the ballpark?

Also next time I'm out at WIU fixing the woman's house where she goes to school I'll have to make the 30 minute run out by you to grab some beers sometime again.

Re: new gear..feels good

You'd better call me next time your in town/near town. If you know a day or so in advance, it's better to call ahead so i can schedule it in...honestly, that's how busy i am...have to MAKE time for a few barley pops LOL!! but that's the least i can do with ya traveling this far heck, I got the first few rounds too

As for the tire to reduce overall gearing, it's a great/easy way to do it. Right now i'm tired and feeling very lazy, and i'm sure you dont need the answer tonight, so for now, just do some google searches on formula for overall tire zie or gear reduction, something like that. Lots of online calcs to make life much easier, you type in current tire size/gear ratio it will give current overall gearing. Then it will have a box next to that for new tire size, new gearing, etc...you just mix and match until you find what you need.

Sorry, but i'm beat otherwise i'd bloodhound it for ya. Been extremely busy working on that stupid trailer, getting the car ready, bidding jobs, doing jobs, ordering/picking up materials, etc....viscious cycle has now begun for the '08 construction season...better than some guys i guess, but every year it just gets crazier LOL!! Tripled our best yr ever last season, this year i have 2.38 times as many bids as i normally average during this time, peep's still tire kicking since we have'nt had a good warm streak yet, taxes are finally done, so they'll be calling to confirm dates and i'll further my stress levels LOL!!!

Re: new gear..feels good

29.5's would be the equivalent of a 3.70 gear or so...you'd need like a 32" tall tire...

Re: new gear..feels good

IHI, been thrashing myself, tring to get my sons 96 bird ready for TT this Sunday. We only were able to get one pass in it late last season. I had the steering messed up real bad on it. Had BAD bump steer. I moved the rack forward and down a little to clear the headers we are using. Bad mistake. Put the rack back in the stock location, and modified the #1 tube to be a slip fit, around the steering shaft. I bought a brand new holley 850 for it and couldn't get it to run. I was racking what little brain I have left, tring to figure it out. It was sucking fuel around the power valve cavity, Like to drove me nuts. I have used moroso gaskets for years and have never had one fail to seal, till this one. Had to file the main body to get it flat. What track do you normally run? Do you know Wayne, that races a Red 54 Corvette? He used to come down here quite abit till last season, heard he was running the points program at Eddieville. Nice guy, tuff racer.

Re: new gear..feels good

most of my racing is at Cedar Falls Raceway, when we have an off weekend i travel to where ver has a good payout within reason, or a good show for the weekend. I only get to eddyville and cordova a few times a season and hit the other nhra track south of me since typically it's a duck pond and easy money.

I was debating getting into the mba series since i missed out last yr with all my continueing engine/convertor troubles, so hopefully i paid my dues for the all the stress free yrs of trouble free racing prior to last season, and i can get this season under my belt and have my junk freshedn up this winter like normal folk instead of complete rebuilds twice in a year

i dont know wayne, i'm sure i'd recognize the car if i seen it. When i'm at the track, i'm kinda in my own world...kinda why my wife does'nt like coming out, heck i even started pitting away from my buddies that all come out. They still raced in the sportsman class and didnt care if they won or not so it was just a time to get together and have fun, i realized the first yr of modified, the fun was over. Costs too much and competition is just way to stiff to let distractions (like kids running around, buddies car troubles and they're stress) that really mess you up. Started hanging with the consistant track hitters, watched how they worked between rounds and started doing much better myself....kinda get all zen like and keep to myself while i'm playing the game...but once i'm done andi throw my fit about how stupid i was for losing, then it's one

Yepper's, just stopped down to Fly'n j and topped'er off with good ole 93 octane...i was looking at race gas pricing and i think i may put the nozzzz on hold for a bit, crimaney, by the time ya buy the kit and all the other stuff needed to run the juice safely and to it's full potential, factor in race gas ontop of that...man, it would already put me well outside where i'm supposed to be for ET and safety/licsence issues, so right now i just wanna focus on saddling up and getting back on top with my race program since this little 2 yr hiatus has been tearing me up

i sent an email to pro systems, i'm going to have pat and his crew go through my 950hp to see what they can tune out of it...figure after 8yrs of good service, it's overdue for a make over and i've heard nothing but great things about them and have talked with a few local freinds that had them work over their carbs and it's literally been night and day with the way the car idles, runs, etc...and they have all picked up .1-.3 and at least 2mph, so IMO for no more than it costs, it's a wise investment!!!

Got the flooring installed int he trailer tonight, supposed to rain tomorrow so i think i may be getting a half day so i can start installing the carpet on the lower section of the walls, tearing out the old lights/outlets/breaker panel, and hopefully start fabbing up my bathroom walls and get that going.

i just wish i could justify the $12-1600 trailer cabinet set up, they look sweet, light weight, but man...talk about pricey!!! My biggest thing is just getting it set up so we can basically live out of it when we race in St Louis next month...try to justify fuel expense by sleeping in vs getting a hotel for the week. We have another couple we're caravanning with that did get a room, so we asked if it'd be alright if we made stops for showers, so that's a plus not that i give a crap, but wife is kinda pickey about that...and it did'nt help i scared her by saying the typical track showers are like jailhouse showers, just a great big open room with shower heads all around and all the girls help lather each other up

so if all goes well i'll have the bathroom walls fitted in tomorrow as well as carpet on bottom half of walls and inner fenders, then i can start upfitting it-just torn as to what to do for cabinets, one side of me wants to get the very cheap unfinished versions of bathroom/kitchen cabinets from home depot of menards, antoher part of me wants to buy actual garage cabinets like the gladiator series, and yet another part wants to build some cabinets and skin them with aluminum sign material my signage guy can get me...i dunno. dang wiring kinda blew me away, i bought a 250' spool of 14-2 and used all that plus about 15' of another roll i had in the truck..good lord, but we gots power outlets everywhere LOL. 2 on each exterior wall front and back for piggy backing purposes, 6 on the interior, 6 110v lights and 4 12v lights. I was looking to get a dorm sized fridge, but walking through some homecenters today i found some "medium" sized fridges that i think would be much nicer, be able to hold everything else PLUS beer

time and money, dont wanna burn all my blow cash on setting up the trlr and miss st louis since like any long away race like that it'll be an easy $1500 to race, but i think this will be my one trip racing this summer, our track has great payouts and 2 day events all season so really no need to go far to race for cash...and hopefully everybody will stay home due to fuel and make my life easier on race day LOL!

yeah... what else is supposed to go in a fridge?

If/when you make it down to Eddyville let me know! Me and a buddy are there pretty much every weekend with our camaros, I just want to see this beast in person and meet a fellow TGO'er.

Will do, i'll throw a post up here in the drag section this summer when we make the commute. Typically we'll race there at least twice depending on our tracks schedule, once for the night of thrills and the other when they have the big payout on an off points weekend. Still contemplating getting into the MBA series, a really good freind of mine won the no box side last season and made out like a bandit....got screwed by most of the vendors promising this and that, and only delievered half of what they said, but still, for $10 entry and a chance at over $15K in prizes, it's kinda like WTF. Not to mention i love eddyville to keep my tree skillz in check since dem boyz down there dont let you get by with anything less than a .010 light and running the dial!! Tought track to win on for sure, but easily once of the nicest tracks in Iowa

Steve, once i had a kid i quickly realized they're digestive system does'nt fair very well on beeer alone, so we have to throw some red meat in there somewhere's along with some milk for breakfast time LOL!!! fricken track burgers costing upwards of $4 for some processed garbage, i'll pass, but the chili cheese fries at Cordova, yummy yummy!!! you can literally feel your artieries clogging with each fry LOL!! nice for when your red lighting, slows your body down to get you green again

But your sig says, "...and full tank of E85".

I feel betrayed. . .

I guess I'm behind, what flooring did you put in the trailer?

Gears are a wonderful thing, change the whole character of the car. In the '57, I'm only going through the traps at about 5400 RPM, shifting at 6200. Probably need to go with more gear.

LOL, yeah, my sig is outdated, that was from the first round with that engine when i THOUGHT i was going to need race gas, and E85 was the more cost effective alternative....then when i lost that crank/engine and had a better sho go through it i found out i was only at 11.8:1 compression, so it was obvious why the E85 did'nt gain me much over race gas on the first engine at the dyno. So the second (and still current) conception of this motor i took up 5 gallons of 93 octane and 5 gallons of 110 octane, i wanted to see how far we could ring it out on pump gas before race gas was mandatory....pump gas we got'er to 636hp/600tq and it was still a bit fat; dyno dude said that was as far as he was silling to push it with that octane...fine by me.

then when we dent back out i bought a new 8" convertor set up for this combo...only this convertor had the ccx stator instead of the cx stator like the previous two that i tried that gave me fits, and i also installed the 29" tires. Car ran like dog doo doo and going from the inital 10.60's @ 126-127mph on the e85 motor and dropping down to 11.00's on this newer pump gas version tha tmade more dyno hp. i was sick to say the least. so i kept tuning and tuning on the carb and got it to within .03 of it's previous best pass ever on the e85 WITH the taller tire so i knew there was more in it...hence the gear swap since like i've mentioned before, the oprevious 2 sets of 29" tires i tried killed my mph and et in a biiiig way. So right now i'm pumped, i fully expect it to start running like it should by getting gearing right so it also cuts convetor slippage in half....last time out i was still averaging 16% convertor slippage, so that kinda tells ya how under geared i was with the big tire, heavy car, no gear....i dont think, by seat of the pants anyhow, that will be a problem this time

Trailer floor:HERE I had to laugh since this is the type of floor i wanted originally, but the SAME manufacturer on THEIR website sells the size i wanted for almost $1200...more than i was willing to drop...and then i had another racer send me that link to sams club and it was only $236 to my door with the membership fee. I did the floor linked from the rear upto the step for the side door and then changed it over to the typical checker board stuff. right now i'm not real happy with the rubber floor, it lays out excellent, looks great, but right now being BRAND NEW it is VERY slippery....you can tell it's still plumb full of the mold release crap they probabaly use at the factory...so it's gonna need some wear and tear so the slickness goes away. It's been raining all day, my shoes were wet and so long as you walked diagonal you were fine since your shoes would grip the ribs, but walking straight, i would compare it to walking on ice...that bad...but like i said, it's new so naturally it's still gonna be a bit slick.

Yeah, I am spoiled having a track that nice in my hometown, I tend not to venture too far.! I'm going to try and hit up Cedar Falls and Cordova just for some 1/4 times this year, but we'll see. I have to drive my car there
