Re: Big converter on the street
Unless something is sub-par(poor quality or worn-out) 95% of the heat is generated from the converter.
If you really want to monitor how your converter is working, put a temp sender in the cooler feed line & one in the pan(if elec gauge you can use one gauge, two senders & a dual position toggle switch to trigger between them). - Then you know what the fluid temp is going into the pump/converter & how elevated it is coming out.
mw66nova's trans/converter/cooler set-up is fairly simple, but very effective. - I ran 5.30's @ 3050lbs repeatedly with that trans and it's simply GM/borg warner stock internals with a good valvebody & rollerized thrust throughout; all the "better" OE components from the various years(aluminum apply pistons, 34 element sprag, p-chassis hardened intermediate shaft). When I freshened it I swapped the input shaft/drum & forward clutch hub with some others I had, simply because I knew how hard I was on them(more than what you should push the OE ones).

Another thing that will help me I'm sure is the new exhaust is further from the th400 pan than the y pipe setup was, I'm sure that will allow lower temps as well. We will see soon, Trans temp gauge is on the way.

Re: Big converter on the street
Ordered the 4500 for the 86 TA and the th400, got the largest tans cooler summit had to offer, 21x10, with that being said, I also purchased a 3 core radiator to try and keep the engine cool with 4.30 gears and Texas heat.
I need to know if I should just run the Trans cooler?
Or, since said radiator has a Trans cooler built in to run through the radiator and then the Trans cooler?
Anyone ever run a cooler as auxiliary for performance? I have only done so for towing.
Also picked up a aluminum pan, the chrome sucks, here is a pic:

Very nice to know, so the "should not run over 150*" statement is not a must? I am still goin to run that cooler with the other. May as well.

I will see what happens. Man, makes me remember why I love my 6 speed manual. No worries like that.

Re: Big converter on the street
I read 180 is where you wanted to be for temps?? My car on a long cruise with some hard driving up hill will get to 180 but mostly hovers around 150-160 from what i can tell. That was with 2.73's. Now i have 3.42 so my rpm will be higher. It may not stay at 160 deg now

Re: Big converter on the street
Well, done and done. Gets warmer than I want at 75 mph. Bout 200*, so I think a new fan setup. The pusher is not helping, has a 165 stat. Still had 3.23 gears so I imagine the 4.30 set will be horrid trying to stay cool. Sounds great, same as the RS of course. Rpm revs faster with the 9.5 converter. Videos to come.
Trans never got above 165 beating the snot out of it.
