400 FWHP should get you there. I doubled checked on the HP calcualtor and it agrees.

Re: How much hp to run 11 sec et
depends on alot of things like suspension/gearing/tranny etc.
Just to break 11.99 with a great chassis setup and perfect gearing, I think you could do it with 400-420 crank hp.
Not so great chassis setup so abit softer launch, and you will need to make up for it with hp, 450 or so.
I ran 11.4's with decent launch and 400 hp at the tires. 350-360 should do it in a 3500 lb car with decent launch. 370's would be better

You can get 10s with 500 HP with the right setup, do 540 and 550 TQ makes it easier.

Re: How much hp to run 11 sec et
It's cheaper to go faster by reducing weight before adding HP. There does come a time when it becomes cheaper to make HP than reduce weight but you're a long way off from that.
As mentioned above, you need to make at least 400 HP to break into the 11's. Below 11.50 and you'll be adding more weight back into the car because at that point, you'll need at least a 6 point roll bar.
500 HP might not get you into the 12's if you can't get the power to the ground. A good chassis setup and sticky tires are required for fast times or you'll just spin off the line and lose it all.

950HP is equivalent to a Demon 825. It is just a 750 with an 850 baseplate. 1000hp is Waaaayyyy more carb than a 950HP.... 950hp is just a name...
with that said buy a Demon 825 or the 950HP...your choice

Re: How much hp to run 11 sec et
Ive got a 87 iroc 350 t-top car all the mods stealth ram etc.. running a t56 with a borg warner 3:45 gear. It made 383hp 383 torque on a dynojet. I really want to get in the high 11's with a manual trans. Is this going to be possible with this combination? Also how do you launch a stick car at the track? I used to have a 700r4 with a 3500 stall. There's t56 cars going 10's and 11's am I right?

Re: How much hp to run 11 sec et
Theres T56 cars in the high 7's but stupid power is needed
87 TA used a T56 for a few years after his auto trans. Never did match his best n/a time with the stick as it couldnt quite launch as hard but I believe his clutch was going out when he started to figure out how to launch it.
YOu really want to give it some rpm and kinda quick slip the clutch out. If it bogs then either slip the clutch abit more or raise rpm to launch. YOu need to practice to get the hang of what your car wants.

Very impressive. Do the airbags go in the place of the coil spring? I cant get my car to plant and hook! I plan to do some 5k clutch drops at the track.

Get a buddy and a tape measure or yard stick out. Bring up the RPM with clutch out and foot on the brake. Let your buddy measure the height from ground to pass side of rear bumper, then move over and measure the driver's side.
One side will lift higher than the other. Thats un even load on tires. By changing the air pressure in the bags you can get the car level ubder power.
I can't remember the #'s off the top of my head but just adding the air bags and getting the pressure adjusted right knocked around .05 seconds off my 60' time

The bags dont replace the springs, you just put them inside the springs. They help to even out the load on each tire with car under power.

After installing mine and getting the air pressure adjusted right on them for my combo, by 60' times dropped by .05 second.

Re: How much hp to run 11 sec et
I dont mean to beat a dead horse, but what gears should I use to try to get into the high 11's? Im pretty sure the 3:50 set in my ford 9" wont do it. So I was thinking three choices the 3:73's, 3:89 or 4:10's. I have the early t56 with the 2:97 first gear ,also my car is 3500lbs made 383 wheel hp and 383tq. Help me out! I cant decide what gear? Oh by the way Im running a 26" tall tire out back. I really hope someone out there can give me some good advice. Thanks...

Re: How much hp to run 11 sec et
http://www.5speedtransmissions.com/gear_calculator.html This is a link to a gear calculator and you can choose aftermarket T56 which I believe has your gear set out of that list. I would need to know your max RPM for the motor to tell you for sure what gear would work best. Assuming you shift at 6500 a 4.10 gear would be ok because you would shift out of 4th at 123 which is a low 11 almost 10 second pass but if you shift out of gear at 6000 you would shift out of 4th at 113 and might not be so good depending your time you run. I am basing this all on not shifting past 4th gear in the quarter because that wouldnt be optimal seeing it has the whole double overdrive aspect to it. So either let us know your redline or mess aroudn with that calculator and you will be fine. Good luck.

Thanks. My car makes peak hp at 5800 rpm, so I need to be around that rpm in 4th gear going thru the traps. I cant figure out that calculator? I dont want to overgear it ya know what I mean?

Re: How much hp to run 11 sec et
Alright so if it makes peak at 5800 and you shift every gear at that RPM you will hit 115 MPH through the traps in fourth gear with a 3.89 rear gear. Im guessing it will be safe to say that you can spin your motor to 6000 still and that will have you trapping 119 in 4th also. 115 MPH roughly works out to a 11.8ish and 119 MPH is definitly a lower 11 second pass. I think the 4.10s might be too much if you dont shift higher then 6000. If you can spin the motor to 6500 or even 6200ish you might be able to get away with the 4.10s. Just gotta know where you will shift your gears at and you can make a final decision.

Re: How much hp to run 11 sec et
With a T56 and a good grippy clutch, you may need a good rear gear to make sure it doesnt bog out the hole. 4.10's is probably what I'd use with peak hp at 5800, depending on how well it holds after that. Shift by 6200 in first/second, 6000 or so in third. try that. 383whp should trap 115-117 which is in the 6100 rpm range thru the traps. If that is abit too much, step down 3.89/3.90 or w/e is available in a 9".
If you are ever going to spray that car, go much lower on the gear. 3.73 or less for sure.

Re: How much hp to run 11 sec et
Thanks for for the input. I also wanted to mention that the t56 that I have is an early version with a 2:97 first gear so Im thinking with a 4:10 gear that might be too much ya know an unusable first gear? (kind of like a dump truck taking off). So if I could get my car in the 11's with a 3:89 gear I would be very happy because it would also be easier on the highway for long trips. Thanks for all the advice.

Re: How much hp to run 11 sec et
Im so pissed! The best I could do was a 12.75 at 111.76. Horrible 60 ft. 1.961! I was going to make another run but I snapped my aluminum 4th gen drive shaft in half! I really dropped the tire psi and heated the tires up along with a 4000rpm clutch dump. I did see cars mph at 112 and they were doing high 11's, What can I expect with like a 1.6-1.7 60 ft? What gets me, my car had less hp with an auto w3500 stall and I was doing 12.53 at 108mph! with stock 3.27 9 bolt, now I have a currie 9" with a 3.89. Is it time to but back the 700r4 or are stick cars just slower!

Factory aluminum driveshafts are not very strong especially for drag racing.
With a bad 60' time, you either have tires that won't hook up or suspension that isn't letting the tires hook up. You want to launch where the engine makes the most torque. 4000 is probably too high.

really? 115mph? Even with 3:89 gears. On my last run that I could'nt make I tweaked the timing up to 35 degrees hoping to get a better mph. I also wasnt going to get off the gas at all between shifts. Theres no telling what would have happened because its all speculation but it looks like I may need to change the cam in my motor to get this thing in the 11's. the 224/230 isnt cutting it. Can you reccomend a nice cam for me? 350zz4 with afr187's stealth ram 30lbsvo 1 3/4 sLp's. Need some good advice or Im going back to an automatic.

Re: How much hp to run 11 sec et
I have a 236/242@.050 (109LSA) cam in my stock L98. AFR190 heads, 3600 Stall, 4.10 gears, single 3" exhaust. Witht he old miniram setup, it went 11.60 at 117 at sea level. Switched to an Air Gap with a Mighty Demon 750 and went 11.89 at 114 in a 3000' DA (1.61 60'). The car is much faster now with the Demon carb...lots more torque. I never dyno'd mine, but I would guess the motor is making 465-475HP...probably 390ish to the ground. Car probably weighs around 3500lbs with me in it (only thing removed is the passenger seat...for tool room).
Your setup sounds similar, so I think an 11.90 for you isn't out of reach. Will be real tough with a stick shift though. You need to practice, practice, practice...

Thanks guys for the words of encouragement. Im going to make a few changes and head back to the track to see if I can save face (lol). One more stupid question. Do you think that mobil 1 15w50 is too thick of an oil to be running in a zz4? I normally run 5w40 mobil 1 but Im also wondering if this thicker oil is robbing some valuable horsepower.

Dont know about the bearing tolerances but its a stock zz4 shortblock thats never been apart. Im going with the thinner oil, thanks, Im also going to change the thermostat back to a 180 from the 195 thats in there now. I need to squeeze as much hp as I can.
