Focus vs Firebird
Ok so i am a member of another forum dedicated to the ford focus. I know don't ask... Anyway there is a debate going on, the guy thinks he raced a 3rd gen v8 and won. Clearly he was racing a 4th gen v6.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jHCL25Dz2lQ
I am right that this was a 1993-1997 firebird right?
He swears up and down his 05 focus ST w/SRI ( short ram intake ) will pull on his buddys LT1.
I told him his only way to beat a LT1 firebird was to get some N2O Boost the car drop in a posi diff, and to grab some drag radials than he Might have a chance.

Re: Focus vs Firebird
Look down a few posts and you can see the discussion where I raced my buddy in his Focus w/ nitrous. I spanked him with my tires spinning all the way through first and into second. He had a 75 shot and a bunch of other things including some crazy expensive intake (supposedly German made and entirely of carbon fiber) Yea, that was a third gen, but looked like a v6 model by the rims alone.

Re: Focus vs Firebird
You cant tell the motor by the wheels, those wheels came on most 3rd gen birds.
The newer model Foci are pretty decent, my girlfriend drives a base 2.0 auto and it can move pretty good. The ST with the 2.3 and a 5 speed is a decently quick car stock.
The face lifted cars (05+ I believe) all come with the Mazda sourced MZR motor instead of the old Ztec. It's a much more responsive motor to typical tuner bolt ons and with a 16 second quarter mile time stock it's pretty simple to knock a second or a second and a half off and put it in the range of most 3rd gens.

Of course the Focus won!
Problem is, the other driver in the 'bird didn't know he was even in a race!

yea, I guess you can't be sure, but.. I am pretty sure those wheels only came on the lower model firebirds. Haven't seen many upgraded birds put those wheels on. It looks like an old 2.8 to me.

Re: Focus vs Firebird
Everything but the TTA and GTA came with those wheels. And those may have just been optional.
Keep in mind there are several wheels from the entire run of the 3rd gen, the wheels shown with the angled slats are pretty common and there is a similar wheel with the center convex instead of concave with a deeper lip as measured near the rim.
There are atleast 2 different cross lace wheels and the bowling ball (knightrider) wheels as well.

Re: Focus vs Firebird
what does this supposed V8 slaying Focus run? theyre not fast cars by any means... any non-V6 thirdgen would beat one stock vs stock
looks like he raced a V6 91-92 firebird in that vid tho
honestly, let him talk all the smack he wants to. then go find him a 4thgen LT1 to race and watch his ego disappear
BTW- whats the name of the Focus loving website? Maybe one of us lives close to this guy and can "educate" him a bit

Re: Focus vs Firebird
a 10.6 at 56mph in the eigth huh? thats like a 16.4 in the 1/4. yeah, even my old LG4 (150hp carb) Camaro was quicker than that... at least it was able to hit 16 flat. after seeing that timeslip, it was most DEFINATELY a V6 firebird
i just viewed the thread...wow. so much information and ignorance in there it made my head hurt. LT1s running high 14s? are they kidding? and they quoted the "old 305" running mid 15s, which if you do the math on the focus's 1/8 mile time, is actually faster than what his ford ran. they just proved the firebird was a 6 without even knowing it

Re: Focus vs Firebird
Both cars were sadly slow lol.
I keep threatening to swap an MS3 turbo motor and 6 speed into my gf's focus or go the RWD DOHC mod motor route, I can pick up atleast 6 of them localy for about $150 each and several places sell kits.....

Re: Focus vs Firebird
Here is his time slip. I could have sworn the bird was a early 93-95, But if i am wrong i can see it being a 91 or 92. I have a 88 so the front end difference from mine to the one in the vid threw me off. I know the bird (whatever year ) has a v6. my weak old TBI 305 will still smoke my dads 2009 focus SES. The thread is here http://www.focusfanatics.com/forum/s...d.php?t=212077

Re: Focus vs Firebird
i posted on the site and tried to shed some light on the performance of 3rdgen/4thgen cars but most of the Focus owners are in denial. theyre trying to say that a 10.6 in the 1/8 translates into a low 15 in the 1/4. rediculous
potentially beating a clapped out L03 is one thing, but then they talk about how LT1 cars are getting taken out by intake only Focus's. whats next? ZR1 loses? jeez

Re: Focus vs Firebird
Amy used to have a fourth gen LT1 Camaro, ran 9.23-9.50 in the 1/8th depending on weather. Now if a 10.60 focus spanked that car by that much, I'm not only going with it's a V6 but I'm thinking poorly running V6 or someone swapped in a Briggs and Stratton 20horse.

Re: Focus vs Firebird
Amen! That car is made up of the best FOMOCO has to offer in a FWD format, The chassis is a colaboration between Volvo and Mazda the engine is Volvos own tank like 5 banger and the revo front end is a beautiful piece of work in place of an expensive and heavy SLA/double wishbone setup.
And the car it's self is the smallest lightest version of Fords corperate small car platform, it's a light weight MazdaSpeed3 with about 40 extra horsepower.

Re: Focus vs Firebird
Yikes.
When you hear a buzzy 4 banger all day, a v6 with exhaust will sound like a monster. I should know, as I have a 2.4L Alero as my daily. After driving it for a week and getting into the v6 'bird with exhaust, it sounds way mean.
Even an LG4 should beat that guy in the 1/8th. That Foci beat a v6 in the vid. Good job.

Re: Focus vs Firebird
Well that Quad 2.4 in your alero is known to be an unplesant sounding and coarse feeling 4 banger, I can tell you if a given GM has that motor or something else just by sitting in the drivers seat. It's an atribute that most larger 4 cyls share.
A small 4 cyl can be quite smooth though, some Hondas through the 90's for example and those Nissan 1.8L CA motors I was talking about.
Ofcourse it's the nature of inline fours that they have bad second order harmonics where I6's and 90* V8's are naturaly resistant.

looks like the guy who started that thread disappeared and is having a turbo Focus step up and fight his battles for him. what does that have anything to do with his claim that his intake only Focus beat an LT1?
