400 SBC options???

well i have a few questions. first off i am a new 3rd gen owner and currently deployed overseas. and buying all my parts now so when i go home it will be like x-mas. but this is my setup. i have a 85 iroc the stock 305 was pulled and i now have a 350 in there. i bought a old like 74 i wanna say 400 virgin motor. i want the gt45 turbo figure i would run like a 10-12lb of boost. going to go with 5.7 rods and .30 over that gives me a...409 rite.i know i need dishes pistons but what else. been looking at the pro comp heads the.. 210/64? i wanna say i dont have my book of stuff in front of me rite now. when it comes to cam i am clueless. and the carb. i know i want a very solid 500+hp whith the forced induction, i would like to know if anyone has some carb/cam suggestions. other things i have ordered for the car so far was a 8 point roll cage, seats. different odds and ends. i cant really start buying anything tilli get back in a few months. the plan is to gut the car pull everything that is not needed. roll cage and racing seats. anyone know who makes alumminum dashes. it a street strip car that looks more strip than street. and for tranny. i have a 700r4. i looked at some stage 2 rebuild kits but what do you think that can handle. i have a old 5-speed sitting in my shed out of a 90 460 f250. i think its a little big though. and last rear end. what is the prime rear end i dont think that stock what 7.75 or whatever it is will handle 2 much. what junkyard cars can you find a ford 9 or chevy 10/12 on. well thanks

Re: 400 SBC options???

cam and carb not sure, nobody makes aluminum dashes and for rearend, you can get a 9 bolt out of certain third gens. but remember you have a torque arm from the tranny to the rear end, so the next rear end you get has to have a torque arm adaption. you can also get the stronger (more expensive) 12 bolt with a torque arm but theyre sorta rare. if you dont want the torque arm youll need a 4 link for the best traction.

Re: 400 SBC options???

A .030 over 400 will give you a 406. Assuming you have a 2 bolt main block, I would at the very least run ARP studs, forged crank, rods and pistons. Basically, if you only have a block then I would go to a reputable machine shop that's dealt with boosted engines and build the engine like they recommend. It's expensive to guess on what combination of parts will work for boosted applications, and talking with experienced builders will save you cash in the long run. Doing A LOT of research on the web doesn't hurt either.

I wouldn't mix "500 HP" and "junkyard rear" in the same sentence. A stock 10 bolt rear can be strengthened/modified to handle power for a while, but you're probably still on borrowed time. An aftermarket rear like the 9" Moser I have will take most anything you throw at it.

The Ford 5 speed you have won't work and probably won't handle that power for long anyway. I'd get a Tremec 5 or 6 speed and a aftermarket torque arm that mounts to the trans crossmember.

Or - for more consistant track times get a built automatic - just MO.. With a stick, It'll be a handful on the street. Also 10 pounds of boost is about the upper limit I would personally go on a stock 400 block. If I did it all over again myself, I'd look into a Dart block. I feel safe with my lowly 5 pounds of boost, but I don't race mine.

I hear C&S (or something like that) makes a good blow through carb, but they are not cheap.....

Either way, good luck with the build and stay safe on that bird farm! GO NAVY!!

Re: 400 SBC options???

Far as I know for a cam the lob. Sep needs to be like 110. And think about it a turbo is
FORCED INDUCTION. YOU DON'T need a big cam or heads, a carburetor quick fuels Q 850
There is no better carb. And keep your compression about 8:1 keep is low.
