Is this worth it/a ripoff?

I've been looking to install a turbocharger in my 3.1L Firebird (1991). I was browsing kits on eBay, and this popped up. It seems to include everything besides your manifold, downpipe, and silicone reducers. The info on it boasts 30+psi, as well as a 500+hp boost (rwhp I assume). Do you think this kit is any good whatsoever, is it a good buy at $590?

Thanks in advance.

30+ psi??? you better plan on building up the bottom end. I have always been for different style builds, you just need to realize what strains you will be putting on your parts, and build accordingly. Does this price include a turbo??? Be careful, ecspecially in high performance parts, you get what you pay for, and the too good to be true offers normally are.

Re: Is this worth it/a ripoff?

I was assuming that 30+psi meant that, that was the upper limits of the turbo. Am I wrong in assuming that I would be able to use it at lower pressures? I'm still new to turbos, so please bear with me. The price does include the turbocharger, and surprisingly the wastegate, which didn't seemed to be included in any other kits I had looked at.

EDIT: I totally forgot to include a link to the kit:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/T3-TU...Q5fAccessories

That should help, sorry about that.

Re: Is this worth it/a ripoff?

if you really want to build a turbo setup on a v6 post over on the v6 board youll get a lot more help/info. check my thread as well it has most of the info you will need

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/v6/5...my-3-4-t3.html

yes 30psi is the upper limit of the turbo, no you wont use that much, on a stock v6 your looking at 5 to 10psi tops safely.

i got mine from here

Re: Is this worth it/a ripoff?

Thanks for the reply,

I've actually read your turbo thread numerous times, and it's what made me want to go turbo in the first place. I'm browsing through the kits on the eBay store you listed above, bit did you happen to have an opinion on the kit I listed?

Re: Is this worth it/a ripoff?

All the kits are SO diffrent really I can only give you opinion on the one I used, it doesn't look half bad though. From what I've heard turbo wise stay away from any with a blue or black tag on them. I'll look trough that kit again in a bit

Re: Is this worth it/a ripoff?

the other one looks like its got most of what you need however

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/UNIVE...Q5fAccessories

this is the one i got and its cheaper, its 550 with free shipping and the other one is 500 with 90 bucks for shipping.

the kit that you were looking at comes with some stuff you dont need like a cooling fan, but does come with the flanges you need. they are both pretty simliar so either one would work.

you will need some extra couplers and some other misc parts that i think are covered in my turbo thread. every universal kit has its ups and downs but most have had pretty good luck with them so ultimatly its your choice on which one to get. this is by no means a bolt on kind of project read a LOT before you even attempt. the hot side has to be completly fabed up so if you cant weld or dont know anyone that welds youll have to pay a shop and that will make it super expensive

Re: Is this worth it/a ripoff?

This Car Craft article pretty much sums it up. They got one of those famous ebay turbo kits to try out on a 55 Chevy with a 406ci in it and documented their experience...

Re: Is this worth it/a ripoff?

u can run well into the low 20 psi range on a bone stock motor if IS TUNED CORRECTLY

ive done it with a bone stock 2.8

as mentioned the ebay turbos are fine just stay away from certian units like the blue taged units witht he tag on the turbo outlet and all the black tag units.

the so called gt35r ball bearing units are crap, as are the gt35 units that have water cooling

most of the ebay t70's are just 50 trim t3/t4's or full on t4's with a 60mm compressor

throw away the oil feed line its crap, the drian line isnt to bad. ebay vbands do suck and ebay non einforced couplers i.e singly ply silicone couplers suck
