Back in Black, BBSDesigns is back!

Hello to everyone! It's been a few years since I didnt post here. I see a lot of new names and still see a lot of the oldschooler's also, I'm very glad to see they are still around.

Well obviousy Im not dead, still doing business with the pharmaceutical industry, and tinkering with the idea of reopening the turbo header business. I have received some letters of supporters encouraging me to keep on going regardless of the downfall we received by the copies being made outthere, so anytime soon I'll blow all the dust of the molds and start again.

Take care!
Ed

Order number one lol....

Ed, I'm running a Precision T-88 with T4 flange and .96 a/r for a worked over 305, lemme know how much modification will be needed to the valve cover and strut tower for the necessary clearance. I'll need everything, both headers, crossover and down pipe. Whenever your ready just lemme know....

Re: Back in Black, BBSDesigns is back!

Ok I see, you just deleted everything. Better yet then I could make you something like this(see pic) it flows better than the V belt header because the design its more of a true header, plus I can offer it with a 3 1/2" downpipe. Its the same setup I am currently running; 2 1/2"crossover, driver's side header, Turbo header and 3 1/2" Downpipe. Let me know if that is what you want and I'll send you a quote.
Thanks again

Looks good! Good to see you back. I had a BBS header but decided to go make my own twin setup on a larger motor. i wish i would have kept that single turbo header tho, save it for another project down the road.

The goal is nine seconds with the 305, and there was lots of work done to the engine so far. The stock 416 heads were opened up very substantially, but the intake valve is still the same size though, which is why I hesitate with larger primary tubing and crossover diameter. The return line on the turbo for the oil is led to the fuel pump block off plate. You let me know what you think would be a better application for my setup....

Re: Back in Black, BBSDesigns is back!

Ed, I might have to go with one of your earlier designs. I'm running the same valve cover breather, as well as that return line fitting in the mechanical pump block off plate, so I may need the turbo positioned closer towards the front of the engine. A 3 1/2" downpipe would be great, but if you can squeeze an even bigger one through though let me know as I have no problem notching the A/C delete box for the added clearance. I may even notch the firewall if I need to. Here is one of your pics....

Welcome back Ed

So, how about some details about that setup? Does it clear the stock hood? Can you get at the plugs on that side at all? What is it made out of? Any pictures of it either off the engine or on one mounted on a stand? How did you run the plumbing from the turbo to the intercooler (in the pic the outlet looks to be right up against the strut tower and there isn't a ton of room anywhere else).

Another person with a nutty 305 project in an 87 TA, but I'll probably need custom flanges (or without flanges, I actually have all the parts I need to make my own, but the project is taking forever because I don't have time, so buying something might be a better approach). In my case I'm thinking of using either a Holset (it's sort of like a T4 pattern with the bolts spaced 1/4" further apart) or a GT4202 (T6), and I'm putting converted LT1 heads on it which have the later style gm performance type exhaust ports (raised D-ports).

How fast have you gone with your TA?

Re: Back in Black, BBSDesigns is back!

Street Lethal,

Remove the mechanical fuel block off plate and check if your engine block does have the downward oil drain on the mechanical fuel cavity area, it should be something like the picture attached. If your block does not have the downward oil drain you need to make a port on the oil pan.

The largest downpipe I've ever done for 3rd gens is 3 1/2" I can not assure you that a 4" dia. pipe will fit between the frame and block.

The Primary pipes on the headers that we make are 1.625 OD and roughly 1.400" ID, thats because we do not use adapter plates for header to block assembly, header material is thick and strong to support the turbo and avoid cracks. Hope that that is what you want.

Antoine,

We are currently working with the website, pricing and everything that goes. We hope to have it running soon.

83 Crossfire TA,

The plugs are very accesible, plugs #2 & #4 are just there for the touch, plug #6 can be reached with no problems after loosing #2 &#4 by getting your hand beneath the turbo, I use a short 5/8" socket plug with the hex on the outside and a 3/4" open wrench. The #8 plug only requires a common 5/8" socket a swivel joint and a 6" extension, its just right there to the eye and hand. Dont need to disassemble anything. With the engine cold takes about 10 min., with the hot engine is more of a challenge The downpipe is a 3 1/2", same primaries and T4 flange, T76 setup on my part with S.96 turbine. The IC pipes run near the inner body but they clear allright, no hood problems at all, except for the Velocity stack which in my case does touches my fiberglass hood from the inside.
Track times well ironically I have never raced the GTA with the current setup on the 1/4 mile, I do have raced it on autocross a lot. I will definately go to the track, but the track near me was closed about a year and a half ago and the other track that is still open is the one I do go but for the roadracing.

Thanks to everyone else for the support!

Re: Back in Black, BBSDesigns is back!

That angle shows things better... I kind of wonder if you'd have that much room to move around if you had a heater box/fan of some sort installed... don't think I could get away with that here, mine is still a street car and even if it wasn't it's not uncommon to want to warm up a little on a 40* end of season track day.

What's the fitting welded to your heater blockoff?

Is that stub connected to the top of the strut tower coming out of the fender connected to your cage or is it something else?

Re: Back in Black, BBSDesigns is back!

Hey Ed, taking another look at that picture you just posted, what is the diameter of the compressor cover on that T76? There looks to be about 1/2" between it and the valve cover which may not work with most of the newer turbo designs out there which have physically larger compressor sides then the old school Txx turbos.

That was the first thing I checked when I welded the fitting to the plate. It does have the downward drain into the oil pan. I was actually worried that even that diameter wouldn't be enough for the return, and was going to weld another fitting in the top of the timing chain cover for the return. But I'll see if this one causes any back pressure first though....

3 1/2" will honestly do for now, can always upgrade later once I see how much room I have to work with when it is all buttoned up and installed....

That is definitely what I want. The overall diameter is fine because I am running enough overlap in the cam to help spool the turbo either way. Plus a larger engine is going in after the 305 runs its time, so it works to my advantage....

Thanks again Ed, lemme know when your ready k....

YES!!!! I hope your up and running around tax season next year. Ive been planning on doing a single turbo build on my Camaro. Only thing readily available was ebay though. And I dont like the idea of constantly rewelding headers. Not to mention they dont make the downpipe.

These are from Phab, they are readily available on the net(yes Ebay, but not JDM crap) for around $350-550. T4 flanges, polished stainless, quality hand tig'd etc.
In the pic's there just mocked-up, Hooker's installed, but I will be using them with a pair of T04Z's.

Looks like passenger side flange needs to be rotated 30* for the turbo to drain correctly

Yeah, there's some definite issues that have to be worked out like, the alternator has to be relocated and I have plans to change to rack and pinion with a type 2 pump to clear the drivers side, although i'm not sure it'll work.

Look at his profile guys, last activity June 17th. I think he might have gotten all our hope up for nothing. Quite disappointing if that's the case.

Re: Back in Black, BBSDesigns is back!

you know, for the same money BBS charges for a hotside you could buy a small welder and materials and build your own, in less time that waiting a long time for something that may never even happen...
