Changed out my badass SBC for a SBE 5.3

You you read it correctly, Future goals with the car would have been limited by the SBC platform, so I have started to sell of the parts from it, and have started to gather parts to build a 540ci Big block, with a pair of borg T6 billet 88's. This is a 2-3 year project, as it's a lot of money, so rather than leaving the car parked for that entire time, I came up with a stupid idea....

This...

Plus these... ( borg warner billet S366's)

Started by going through the engine, aftermarket components are as follows:
ARP 2000 rod bolts, Custom grind turbo cam, LS7 lifters, Brian tooley pushrods, ARP head studs, LS9 head gaskets, cloyes single roller, comp trunion kit, dual valve springs with Ti retainers. Otherwise its a bone stock 5.3 with untouched 799 casting heads.

Re: Changed out my badass SBC for a SBE 5.3

Car has been running now for 2 weeks or so, I've put a **** ton of miles on it, runs really well and i'm amazed with the beating that it takes (I've already maxed out the 3 bar map sensor...) Plans are to take it to the track in around 2 weeks or so.

Re: Changed out my badass SBC for a SBE 5.3

Those pictures were from an event called Street Machine Weekend, I finished the car around 4am and was on the road for a 5 hour drive south at 9am, beat the car relentlessly all weekend and other than a shredded tensioner pulley and belt, it never missed a beat. Friday nights they have a 850 car controlled cruise, Saturday is a 100 foot shootout as shown above, and Saturday night we go out street racing. Overall a tiring but super fun weekend.

Gotta love the beadlocks, ran the 100 footer on 275 pro radials, then saturday night switched them out for some 28 x 10.5 hoosiers for some street action.

Most gen 4 5.3's had 10:1 compression and flat tops. I have yet to see a gen 4 without flat tops

Very impressed with what you have done.. If I had the time and facility I would have taken a lot more time to fab up my old school sbc setup.

Any pictures of how the down pipes are routed? All the way to the rear of the car?

Re: Changed out my badass SBC for a SBE 5.3

Took the car to the track on Friday night after thrashing to sort out all the little bugs on thursday night.

First pass the car went 9.24, this was the second pass.

Drove the car home, stopped at a buddys on the way home, went to start the car to leav and the battery was dead. alternator had apparently died and I drove it most of the way home on the charge in the battery.

Charged it over night at his place, drove it back to the shop and celebrated my new alternator by doing this.

Got to admit the strength of these motors make it hard to justify aftermarket parts.

When you have a block crank rods and pistons that are capable of holding big power, makes no sense in doing other builds. Especially a small block chevy or ford

Killer setup would be forged boost pistons on stock internals and that should give you alittle more of a tuning window. Relatively inexpensive 1000 hp capable build

Impressive.

I tend to agree, I'm thoroughly impressed with the abuse this engine has taken thus far, and hasn't missed a beat. Time will tell the longevity I suppose. But when it does pop, a replacement is dirt cheap.

Really did have to try hard lol. I literally re-tuned the car on the way to the race track with the 160lb injectors, First pass ever with this combo the car went 9.24 at 154mph, second pass it ran what you see, 8.86 at 161. MPH is there for 8.40's. Gonna spend the next little bit creeping up on the starting line tuneup, and try and get the 60' back down into the high 1.2x/ low 1.3x range where it should be and I'm pretty confident the car will be out of cage by that point.

Re: Changed out my badass SBC for a SBE 5.3

Friggin awsome!

Love the build. Supercharged 5.3 here too on a stock long block. Running a FMIC and meth as well... how much meth are you injecting? Being that mines a gen 3 I dont have the floating pistons and better rods.

Side word of caution. Pull those comp cam trunion upgrades immediately. After low mileage the needle bearings chew into the trunion (not hard enough finish) and throws metal through the motor. Its been proven on LS1tech with lots of photo proof even after like 3k miles. Best thing out is the Straub bushing sets and cost the same if not less than the bearing upgrade kits.

Tell them to pull them apart. you can't see the metal wear till they are dissasmebled. This goes for all kits except for tooley I think.

Or see pics for yourself throughout the thread http://ls1tech.com/forums/generation...n-kits-21.html

Most companies are now selling the bushing kits. TSP, Tooley I think does now, due to the blow up of people opening the bearing upgraded trunions and finding wear after such a short time. Tooley's are slightly different than the comp/summit etc style trunion upgrades. Tooley has oil modifications and a different harder trunion material and its an overall better product.

My OEM trunions have 150k on them, no way Im putting in the bearing versions with wear as low as 3k, I have a box of the straub bushing kit ready to do mine when the time comes.
