Safari and OS X

Anyone else having trouble using OS X's Safari? All of the links are white which makes it kinda hard to navigate. Firefox works fine though. I attached a snapshot of my problem.

I am too. In fact, I came here to ask about that.. I've gotten around by selecting everything on the page, and looking at it through the highlight, but it's quite annoying.

It sounds like Safari is ignoring the CSS file. If so, there's really nothing that we can do about that. Also, not having a Mac system to test with, if that's not the problem, there's still nothing that I can do to work it out.

I would suggest downloading FireFox.

Actually safari is interpreting it the right way. Since it's assigning the class in the table, it's ignoring that because there is a style assigned to anchor tags. It's picking up the a:visited as #FFFFFF because everything with a <a> tag around is assigned that default class. Either take out the default a: styles or add a new style to the links and add it to code. I really don't want to open firefox just to view one site. Safari is a better browser, and I'm sure there are more then just a few people that use mac/safari on this board.

Safari renders the sites I visit just as well as Firefox, and this new site is the first one that's given me problems. Are you guys going to fix this? If not, I'm sure Phyte and myself can go through the template php and css files and correct it so it'll work for us Safari users.

Another Safari user here.
I have the same problem.

But it's on this site only (and I do frequent other vBulletin sites).

Bad theme/skin.

I can't see the links either in Safari. I can't seem to get the Quick Reply thing to work either. I may just be overlooking something there though. The main links thingy at the top...the red looks funky too.

As I said before, only 0.4-0.5% of the users of this site use Safari, that makes it about 1 in 200 visitors. We may fix it down the line, but it is not a high priority, especially since we don't have any Mac systems to test with, and because there are other browsers that MacOS users can use (like Firefox and Opera).

I understand your argument, but fixing this issue would take only a few seconds, assuming that you're using a linked stylesheet (which I'm sure UBB uses). Yes, us Mac users are a minority, but we're still part of the user base.

I design websites part-time and one of my goals is to ensure that my sites are viewable on as many browsers as possible. It's just an indication of quality... and with an out-of-the-box program like UBB, maintaining compatibility shouldn't be an issue. I know you don't have access to any Macs for testing, but we're willing to help correct this problem.

I think that's a great idea. I have no clue about UBB but it appears we have several in this thread who know a thing or two.

I visit this site daily and it would be nice to see all the links properly. You've got several members here with some serious know how. Take advantage of it for us. It will make the site have much more "quality" as mentioned before.

Don't get us wrong, we appreciate all the hard work in getting us an updated message board. I like the new style and features, but for us mac users it's not 100%.

Thanks for listening...

This is not UBB, it's vBulletin, just a MUCH newer version than what Dirk had installed.

As was said by 'blue86iroc', when designing a site the goal is to make your pages work for as many users as possible. We've done that. This site looks fine for 99.5% of the visitors to this site (it even works on my cell phone). That, to me, is a very large percentage, and is better than many major corporations do (I've come across some that have IE-only sites and won't even let you in if you use something else).

That said, I cannot justify spending my own time, or having Dave spend his, on such a minor issue. Just use Firefox or Opera, both of them run on MacOS and the site looks perfect in both.

Mozilla Firefox 1.5.0.1
Opera 8.52

I can work on the template PHP and CSS file in my spare time and then send it back. You just have to drop the files on the server, and it's done. Going to the bathroom would take longer than replacing a couple small files. You don't get members that often who will offer to fix a website for you (and for free, no less) so take advantage of it.

I'm a member and all my time/effort is free, as well as quite a bit of others here. I spend quite a bit of time behind the scenes as it is helping out. I agree with Jason's points. The website works for the majority of the users. Some, large, websites don't even support FireFox. Some don't even totally support IE anymore.

That said, I've looked into this a few times. The CSS stylesheets are stored in a database, not a file system. CSS information is in a template form for the forum. Looking in the vB community, this is not the only issue Safari users have reported with the vB software. Much of the responses I've seen indicate that vB codes to w3 standards and that Safari specifically is known to be the problem, while IE, FireFox and Opera are fine.

I'd be open to looking into this more, even though I totally agree with Jason. But with vB being as modular as it is, there are *a lot* of templates. I don't know how far this issue goes.

I need a MAC to test on. I don't want to go messing around with the Styles and ruin it for everyone without being able to see the results on a MAC. I'm sorry for the inconvience.
