Berlinetta radio just statics

My 1984 berlinetta has the original r2d2 radio in it and it does not work. All I get no matter what station is static. When I put a Casset in it I also get a lot of static and a little bit of audio...

Okay, I grounded the wire and the gauge went up and the coolant temp light came on on the dash so that tells me the sending unit is bad? If I take the sending unit out will coolant leak?
