how do i get around emissions in north carolina?

i live in north carolina (cabarrus county) and in my county they have to use a sniffer during an inspection. i'm putting a new engine in my car and i wont be able to do what i REALLY want to do with my new engine because i have to make sure it will pass inspection. but a lot of my friends i know have VERY illegal cars and quite frankly i'd like to get ride of all my emissions crap so i can make my new engine into a BEAST and not worry about it being illegal ("on paper"). is there a way to get around it consistantly?

oh, my car is registered in cabarrus county and i think u can only get your car inspected in the county your car is registered in. what if you had a p.o. box in another county or had it registered in another county? would this work/how would this work? or i guess has anyone done anything like this before so you can have an "illegal" car???

Thats a bummer you live in Cabarrus. Our counties "emissions" test is simply looking for I/M Readiness flags being "Ready" and DTCs not being set on 1996 and newer. Your one of the nine "tailpipe" states, so you've got seven more years before your "sniffer" exempt.

Your allowed 1.2% CO and 220ppm HC, which is more than I expected. I think that if the engine "appears" stock (in case of a visual) and you have it tuned, those two gasses should be close to the limit. Throw a Catalytic Converter on to boot and it should clean up the rest. Since it appears they don't test for NOx, then the more expensive 3-way catalyst won't be needed.

I'm probably going to throw my LS1 on the 4-gas next phase to see what its doing just so I know.

Oh, and I don't think your PO Box idea will work, but an admirable idea nonetheless.

Well, your car has to pass per your county's rules. HOWEVER, if you know someone in another county who'll pass it, they can *cough* "inspect" it for you.

Guilford County requires sniffer tests (till next year), but not many of us in the hot rodding community actually run any emissions.

Not that I'm recommending it. That would be against the law.

Is the emission sticker for a "sniffer" county the same as a "non-sniffer" county?

To be honest, I'm not really sure how it works. I have a few friends who run and who work for garages in different counties. They say that as long as I can pass Guilford County emissions, it can be inspected in any county.

For my last few inspections, the car hasn't left the driveway, so I'm not really sure how it's "supposed" to work! I happen to have got my stickers from friends in Guiford, so I can't compare stickers.

well i was reading around on this south eastern forum in another thread and over saw someone mentioning that in 2006 n.c. is doing away with emissions for 95 and older models. so in otherwords they would only be "sniffing" 96 and newer or OBDII cars but they would have to pass a visual inspection. do u know if this is true or is there a way to findout if this is a fact? well i guess i should be asking the guy i saw post this but if this is true then this is the best news i've heard since my boss said i was cut and can go home last night!!! lol

The stickers are or were the same when I lived in Irredell county 2 years ago.

We only had to pass a visual at that time & I always went to Mecklenburg county for my inspections. If you know someone that inspects for a living in any county then you should talk to them to see what you can or can not do at their inspection station to pass. {hint... hint}

The thing that ticked me off is I manage to pass a inspection with limo tint. A few days later Mooresville Police did a light check & made me strip my tint off.

After January1st, 2006 there will be no sniff test as I understand it - just safety on cars pre 1995. I'm building a 350 carb with headers, no AIR, no EGR, no O2, no ECM, in Wake county. Technically, all emissions equip must remain on vehicle, but there are many hole-in-the-wall shops that won't look. Just don't put plates on until January!

Or, get an out-of-county address.
