Third gen reliability

A friedn keeps insisting I should "watch out" for third gen cars as they have "lots ot problems". Just wondered it there is a particular issue ? Can it be fixed with aftermarket parts.

I replied to your ad, btw. To me there are 3 reasons that 3rd gens, and any car for that matter, aren't reliable.

1) Idiots buy a Trans Am/Z28/whathaveyou, and immediatly push it to the max 110% of the time and just abuse it, until it's absolute junk.

2) People like us, who mod it and change things 110% of the time and break things in the process.

3) Lemons. Like any other car ever produced, they have lemons.

But if you take care of them, and give them the service they require, and don't mess with them, they will last for quite awhile. I've owned 4 3rd gens. 3 of the 4 I've talked with the original owner and bought them and never had a problem with them. The 4th car I bought from a "Mesa Craptastic Car sales" and paid the price of not going through a person's for sale ad. But I love 3rd gens.

Oh yeah, my "4th 3rd gen" was an '85 and had tons of emission controlling sensors that all went 1 after the other. They are a bit cheaper to replace than they were 5-7 years ago, but I remember paying close to $800 alone on sensors.

Another thing that tends to go bad, but I guess in the automotive world it's common to all cars, is the alternator and water pump.

Car: 1991 T/A - Sold (sniff) 1980 T/A Pa
I bought my 88 Formula and drove that for 2 years without a major repair until it got totalled by a stupid kid.

I bought the 91 in 1998 with 98,000 miles on it. It now has 175000 and I drive it every day to work. I had to rebuild the tranny and I replaced the intake manifold gasket as the only major repairs.

Yes, things like the A/C compressor the water pump the radiator and thermostat have had to be replaced, but those usually run for less than $200.

I agree though, kids buy these and 4 barrel them into an early grave. If you drive it normal, change the oil and filters and do regular maintenance, the run fine.

well going back to the original subject i think all cars are reliable if you treat them with TLC.....thirdgens, stangs, doesnt matter.... if you mod them for racing then expect to cut its life short...its common sense that when you start pushing an automobile for more power you get it at the expense and risk of cutting its life short.....
