What my crippled car ran at Firebird the other night

So my car was running pretty rich thanks to the worn out stock FPR. 53psi to be exact. Idling it would burn my eyes and highway mpg was pretty horrible too. Also my car WILL NOT shift from 2nd to 3rd at WOT. And with street tires....

FIrst run with an awesome 2.6 60ft I nailed a 16.3@92mph. Oddly enough the car did shift into 3rd on this run.

2nd run, did a much improved 2.2 60ft launch and got a 15.1@90. I had to let off the gas at 5500 so it would shift into 3rd.

3rd and final run, did the same launch as run #2, this time the car wouldn't shift into 3rd no matter what I did.....15.3@80 <------sickening!!!!

I have a lovely set of MT ET street DRs, but they are on 4th gen wheels so I need to buy spacers. They will get me the <2.0 launch I need.

Well, last I installed the Holley AFPR and got it in around 43psi. I could already tell a difference in idle quality alone. And was playing around with the B&M Governor recalibration kit. It still won't shift into 3rd. But I'm going to keep playing with it.

For all things considered, I was pretty happy with the way the car ran and the times it pulled. Anyway, share your thoughts and questions.

15.1 on a stock 3rd gen not running correctly is pretty respectable IMO.

This reminds me that I need to get my 91 out and get some baseline numbers.

I agree. Makes me wonder what my car can pull out at the track.

IIRC my buddy's basically stock (only had a cat back) 87 IROC 350 TPI/MAF did a best of 14.9. It ran pretty good too.

Re: What my crippled car ran at Firebird the other night

I've been putting in different weights on the governor. I've tried probably 10 different combos so far. The one I have in there now is the #1 weight with an green spring, and a #5 weight with the stock rust spring. It was shifting perfect with this combo yesterday, then last night on my way back home from seeing KICK-***, it didnt want to shift into 3rd again. A little aggrivating....

I am about to recalibrate my govorner, car shifts at 4100 rpm at WOT it has 3:42 gears in it and I am pretty positive it's a rebuilt trans. I am not looking forward to playing with all the weight/spring combo's either.

It's super easy actually, It almost takes longer to jack the car up than change the weights and springs. It's just trial and error that takes time. If you have plastic gloves on, you don't even get dirty. And there's no bolts and barely any fluid loss per changeout, <.5oz.

Nice! Sounds like I should get a pair of ramps for this endeavor.

Re: What my crippled car ran at Firebird the other night

**Update**

Well, after 15 failed combos, I'm getting a transgo shift kit. They say the 700r4's achilles heal is the throttle valve sticking in the valve body causing gears to hold, like my 2nd gear, and shift kits will fix this.

That valve has been sticking on your car since you bought it. After the install you should be able to properly adjust your TV cable and the car should shift at 5500 rpm at full throttle if functioning correctly.

Re: What my crippled car ran at Firebird the other night

I hope so. But 5500 is way to high. 5200 is just about perfect for 1-2 and 4800 for 2-3. At least with the governor recal kit, I can choose my shift points. So it wasn't a waste of time.

Re: What my crippled car ran at Firebird the other night

Trust me that car should be 5500 at full throttle on the upshifts. 4800 is way to low for a 350 car. It feels better at lower points right now because I bet your line pressure is all jacked up with that bad TV valve. You will have to readjust once you put in the new valve. You will see what I talking about when you are done with that shift kit install. I have a shift kit in my tranny, I have mine now set at 5300 and its a 305 car. You change your servo also to the corvette one (makes a big diffence in shift feel and shift speed). I also have the vette servo in my car. They are cheap and easy to install. http://www.highperformancepontiac.co.../photo_07.html
